Legendary artist Gene Colan has passed away:

I was a fan of his artwork since first seeing him on Tomb of Dracula in the 70's. His superhero stuff, Dr Strange, Daredevil, Howard the Duck, etc. was just wonderful. Truly cinematic in his approach, and if you ever got to see his pencils truly art in it's finest sense.

Creature Features

His work on Tomb of Dracula is one of the best runs in comic history. A true masterpiece! R.I.P., Gene... :'(

Falk and Colan on the same day. Both 70s icons in their fields. Who do I see about spacing out the misery a bit more??

RIP GC.

Here is a sketch that I got from Gene through the mail back in the late 80s (as best as I can recall).

RIP Mr. Colan

Rob, you must have gotten yours the same time I did! If I remember correctly, Gene was trying to raise funds for eye surgery. He put an ad in the Comic Buyers Guide (I believe) and for $10 he'd do an 8"x10" sketch! I wish I would have gotten a Dracula and a Howard the Duck, but ten bucks was a lot for me back then. I always loved his run on Captain America so I picked him.

Mike,

That was exactly the same ad I saw.  Oh how I wish I had bought more sketches of other characters.

Rob and Mike, those sketches are great.  I remember Gene Colan mostly from his Warren magazines work, and Howard the Duck comics and magazine.  I also loved his artwork with Marvel's Brother Voodoo character, but his Warren art is what I will remember him for the most.  Rest In Peace Mr. Colan.  Seems like we've been losing a lot of the Warren artists in the last three years, doesn't seem right somehow.

Gasport

I was very fortunate to meet both him and Stan Lee at a Sci- Fi con here on Long Island in the early 90's. Here's a sketch that i watched him draw for me...RIP  to one of my all time favorite artists.\
