I've also long wanted a Kraken, but hesitated to plunk down the money.  Condition is also a problem.  I want one completely unused.  Almost all of the ones you see on ebay have been assembled, probably played with, then disassembled and returned to the box for storage.  I've heard that it is very difficult to remove the fins once they are inserted without breaking the toy.  A truly mint, unused Kraken will have its fins individually sealed in plastic bags.  The bags were then somehow attached to the inner box flaps, probably by tape.  This is what I've heard from someone who owned a never used, never opened, gem-mint Kraken.

My memory of the fins on the Kraken was not necessarily they they broke from removing them, but that they just tended to be very loose. I seem to remember them even falling out when you picked up the toy. Could have been just mine though.

My Kraken was as you describe Dave, right outta the box Christmas '81. Seems like a hair dryer fixed the issue just fine, and that it was due to the fins being blow molded.

Ray, in all the years, I've never seen a broken Kraken. They are fairly heavy duty. My memory is that the fins came paired in one bag which was taped to an insert. If you end up with a sealed in box one, don't open it, I'll just swap you for mine, it's held up fine.
