Title: Let's Talk Metal.
Post by: Dr.Teufel Geist on February 22, 2010, 11:26:42 PM
A thread devoted to Metal Talk...either movies/videos/albums/bands/whatever....

Has anyone seen the Heavy Metal Horror movie....Trick or Treat...music by Fastway...
Sammy Curr is a lead singer of Metal Band and he's a Devil Worshiper, he makes a human sacrifice at a Hotel fire..
He dies in the fire and comes back to wreak Havok..
Ozzy Osbourne plays an Evangilist against Metal Music.
Gene Simmons is a local DJ.
Skippy from that Michael J.Fox sitcom from the 80s, stars as the Metal kid who gets picked on alot.

Excellent Movie and an excellent soundtrack as well...
Any comments??

Yes, I have seen it....and totally love the flick. I read somewhere, that Blackie Lawless was originally
going to play the Sammi Curr part. But, the movie is so great. I just can not think of any memorable Quotes, off-
hand. I still have the soundtrack on cassette. What is your favorite scene(s)? I think one of my favorite scenes, is
when Eddie is standing in front of door between the two pumpkins, as Tim(Doug Savant) shows up. Tim and Eddie
start to argue over what happened to Tim's girlfriend, the flames inside the pumpkins rise. But, there are other
cool scenes too.  >:D

I love the movie, but the cover i have has gene Simmons and Ozzy on it. I don't get why they did that because they have very small parts. But i guess they just did it to sell the movie.

I know I've seen this before but nothing really stands out about it in my memory.  So I went and checked out some Youtube clips and sure enough watching it it's all coming back.  I had bought this for my brother when I saw it a few years ago, I think he liked the soundtrack more than anything as he's not a big fan of horror flicks.  I'm just the opposite, I think the soundtrack is what killed the movie for me.  It's like having to listen to that dreaded Dokken song for NOES III but it's thru the entire film!  Sorry but I hate 80's hair metal....

Backwards messages on vinyl...now that brings back memories!

Yeh.that was a killer scene...I also like the part where the chic in the backseat get's Mind-Censored by the Metal Demon..
Also where Sammy Curr is sitting amongst the Pentagram and flames are closing in on him.

"Wake up sleepyheads.....it's party time."

I've seen that movie a few times over the years. The last time was early last year . I got it in a lot of movies off Ebay. It really didn't do much for me(movie or music) and it seemed much longer than it was. I sold it to a friend for $2 and bought a king can of malt liquor.

You mean this Heavy Metal?

"Hanging's too good for him.  Burning's too good for him!  He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and buried alive!"

An excellent film indeed, cool stories and tons of quotable lines.  There was never a remake, though they are talking about doing one.  There was the sequel, Heavy Metal 2000 but I've never seen it.  It goes without saying one of my favorite episodes is the zombies!

Great movie!!!! So much cool animation. My favorite story or short is: Harry Canyon, taxicab driver.

"It's your one way ticket to midnight....
                                                          Call it HEAVY METAL!!"

"Higher than high, feelin' just right

I should have been clearer. I meant 80's Doom compared to later 90's to now is pretty weak. Doesn't mean there aren't a lot of memories. I used to LOVE Judas Priest but I throw it in now and stuff I thought KILLED is almost like hard elevator music. :P

There's a some good "Doom" metal bands today. Like......Weedeater and Buzzov•en both late 90's bands, and
pretty much the same members. I think Buzzov•en is a done deal now? But Weedeater, definitely good.

Has anyone heard the new Ozzy song "Scream"? It's sounds like a typical Ozzy song but I'm looking forward to the new album and tour this year.

Also, Maiden has a new album coming out this summer "The Final Frontier" complete with a North American tour that ends in DC this summer. I saw them in '08 Somewhere Back in Time tour and they still whupped ass.

Maiden is my favorite band (Dickinson only please, none of that Blaze mid 90's stuff thanks) with Sabbath/Ozzy a close second. I would love to see them both this summer if the dates work out.

Blaze Bayley def wasn't "Maiden"--but I will say X-Factor is a great album. Though it is so dark and depressing--you really have to be in the mood to listin to it--which I think is controdictary to Maiden.

Iron Maiden is like positive audio energry if that makes sense. X-Factor sounds...cold and it's sad. I can appreciate anything that is so atmospheric but comming from Iron Maiden--I don't know---I havent had to listin to it in awhile. Though, I got to see Bruce sing "Sign Of The Cross"---and it was pretty damn amazing!

I've said this before--Maiden should have went on hiatus without Bruce and simply had X-Factor be a side project in the meantime.

I did get to see them on that tour, which was a club tour--so literally I had my hand next to Steve Harris foot throughout the show--Bruce or no Bruce--I will NEVER forget the opening tunes which were "Wrathchild/Heaven Can Wait" at about 5 feet away.

Anyway--I'm glad Bruce is back--I'm not gonna knock A Matter Of Life And Death, but it def my least favorite release--it has some good, solid stuff on it--but it lacks a little bit too. Some of those songs are just too long, though I do love Benjamin Breeg.

I'm hopping Final Frontier goes back to what they were doing with Dance Of Death--which I thought was up there with classic Maiden. Time will tell...I doubt we'll ever hear Piece Of Mind again...but I thought Dance was a great mix of mature, contemporary metal, with alot of classic Maiden vibes--Bruce killed it, and those classic triplets and galloping rhythms were there. Good enough for me!

Now that I'm all amped up on Iron Maiden---Number Of The Beast is by far my favorite album---but I do admitt to having a very special spot in my heart for both the self titled and Killers---those albums have a unique mix of "epic metal" and raw, stripped down U.K. Punk...I could listin to Killers all day!
Title: Re: Let's Talk Metal.
Post by: BaronLatos35 on April 27, 2010, 09:59:08 PM
Killers is a great metal album. "Innocent Exile" "Purgatory" "Wrathchild" all kick ass. Number of the Beast flat out jams. I remember seeing the album in the stores when I was 10 and with out hearing any songs knew I had to have it off the bad ass cover alone. After hearing "Hallowed Be Thy Name" I was hooked.

I love all their work through 7th Son but never got into any of their 90's stuff. Fear of the Dark was the last Maiden I listened to until Dickinson came back. Although I only downloaded a couple songs off A Matter of Life and Death and the album with The Wicker Man. Their newer stuff just didn't do it for me. In '08 I saw their greatest hits tour Somewhere Back in Time and it rocked.

Don't know about Final Frontier but it's Maiden. I'm going July 20th and it will only be my 3rd time seeing them, so I'm ready.

Up The Irons!!!

Fear Of The Dark is a great album!!

I think Bruce's departure had alot of fans falling off the Maiden wagon---X-Factor and Virtual XI were the nail in the coffin.

I thought Brave New World was fanstastic--the title track, Wicker Man--and Ghost Of Navigators are killer!

Dance Of Death--Seriously, to me anyway--I thought if you never heard Maiden before and mixed that in with Number, Piece, Powerslave etc--you could totally fool someone. It was great.

Then Matter Of Life And Death--they made such a big deal out of it, I just had higher expectations.

If they can do what they did with Dance and Brave New World for the new album--plus pull off the old stuff I'll be happy.

Oh yeah that was another thing, when they toured for Matter Of Life and Death--they ONLY played that album in its entirety then did Hallowed and Iron Maiden as the encore.

Get that sh*t out of your system for this tour...please!

I hope they don't pull that junk and only play this new unheard album. Please open with Churchill's Speech/Aces High at least!

Never heard Dance of Death, I will have to check it out in iTunes. Brave New World was good as well as the Wicker man, but they still didn't do it 100% for me. These Colors Don't Run and Ben Breeg were the same. OK at best. I rarely listen to them. My wife keeps messing with me about updating my music, but seriously there was something about that era of music. Man that sounded old!

Fear of the Dark was cool. I'm hoping for the best with Final Frontier.

I listened to all things Maiden until No Prayer for the Dying came out, I dunno the album just didn't do anything for me.  After that one I never really checked out anything they were doing.  I did hear some stuff off of Brave New World and thought it was pretty good but never got the album.

I'd give No Prayer another chance but I don't think I even have the disc anymore, maybe I'll see if there are any MP3s I can check out!

Baron, if you want I can add "Dance Of Death" to the list for you.

Zombie--I think Bruce's voice flat out blows on No Prayer lol.

It's rough and raspy, and it was hard hearing that especially since 7th Son, right before it he was as good as ever.

Some of those songs are a little weak, but some of them grew on me...Bring your daughter to the slaughter and holy smoke are pretty cool. Hooks in you is pretty cool too---but in comparison to other stuff its def not their strongest release.

I think anytime a band has that many releases and this much longevity, there are gonna be a few albums that kinda suck. Judas Priest has Turbo, Slayer has Diabolus--which sounds rushed and watered down--

Even some of the stuff Led Zeppelin did towards the end had people scratching their heads--though I will say alot of Zep's latter work is my favorite stuff.

Actually Iron Maiden covers Communication Breakdown on the No Prayer For The Dying B'Sides---pretty cool too.

Never been much of a Maiden fan. During that time frame I was mostly into Hardcore and various punk. Early Metallica/Slayer/Exciter/Venom etc etc. I thought the Maiden Debut was pretty good so I bought Killers , listened to it 3-4 times and found it rather boring and all samey same same. Gave it to a friend who liked it much more than me.
It's true. YMMV.

I'm the opposite there Lester. The first Maiden was cool, but Killers left it in its dust. Supposedly most of Killer's songs were surplus from the first album.

Loved Metallica's first 4 albums, never got into Exciter/Venom or punk. I liked Hell Awaits and Reign inBlood but never was a big Slayer Fan. However I was a big Megadeth fan. Peace Sells... and Rust in Peace flat out whup ass. Megadeth/Overkill was also my first concert in'87.

And of course...Ozzy.

Post by: BlackLagoon on April 28, 2010, 11:03:12 PM
I guess I'm all of the above. KISS (original) turned me on to music 1st and foremost--but everything changed when I found Iron Maiden.

Maiden turned me onto heavier things and I found Slayer...then Pantera. Then the Misfits which was what actually got me playing.

From there I got into heavier things and Obituary was my 1st and still favorite death metal band of all time--then black metal happened.

Somewhere in the mix I found that raw, blackend thrash with a punk edge that was Venom, Bathory, Sacrifice, etc and loved that too.

Now, I guess I'm old enough and mature to stop labeling things--back when if you liked death metal, black metal guys thought you were a sell out---you couldnt like hardcore and power metal--stupid.

If I told you that some of my favorite albums were from Rainbow to Dismember, back to Iron Maiden, then Anthrax, over to Cannibal Corpse, back to Emperor, then I'll go from Dead Kennedys to Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest to Napalm Death--

I just like good, creative, aggresive music--that is my bottom line.

Some of the younger guys that come into the studio I hang have this thing going---"if they dont use 7 string guitars, its not heavy"--I draw the line with Cannibal Corpse. They are one of my favirote bands but even them--sometimes especially the older stuff its jumbled.

I have no idea what these new bands are doing. There is ZERO song structure--everything is 5,0000 miles an hr and there is virtually no rhythm--its just a flurry of notes and screaming.

Death metal that I dig nowadays is considered lame. Because there is song structure and time signatures?!---I'll take my Number Of The Beast, Tomb Of The Mutlilated and keep to myself---I love metal, but this new "metalcore" stuff is just---its unlistinable!
Title: Re: Let's Talk Metal.
Post by: BaronLatos35 on April 29, 2010, 07:46:46 AM
I hear you BlackLagoon. The "newest" metal I got into was Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power. I saw them with White Zombie sometime in '94/'95?

I'm not into turning your instruments up and screaming as loud as you can just to play the fastest and loudest. There still has to be a rhythm. Even Slayer had it on Hell Awaits.

I feel this way about most music today including the sad state of Hip Hop. Uninspired and flat.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Metal.
Post by: BlackLagoon on April 29, 2010, 01:36:15 PM
Yeah I'm a big rhythm guy myself---actually on my own guitar I took the high "E" string off of it--I only use the 5 strings. I keep it simple.

I think with metal, its pretty hard to come up with "brand new" ideas--kids are trying to reinvent the wheel with the guitar.

Everything is played in "C"--its layered and jumbled. Songs start and they just go, there is no hook or catch. My bass player freaks out over this band Pysopus I think--seriously, its just noise. It actually gets me annoyed when I have to hear it.

The sad part is that old school death metal is considered weak now--someone said something about my vocals asking me if I could get lower. If I got lower you would need sonar to hear it--I love brutality in music, but at what point does it go to far?

The same kids think these "new school metalcore" bands invented breakdowns and blast beats---Judas Priest was doing that stuff in "74" and almost every single riff these kids are playing can be heard on the 1st Maiden cd--Phantom Of The Opera has been stolen from so many times its a joke.

Also--if you want a song that doesnt follow traditional song structure, has a KILLER break down that will make you jump up and down--break neck riffing, and even a bass solo---you don't have to look to these new metal bands claiming they were the 1st---its all in the 6 or so minutes that are Iron Maiden's Phantom Of The Opera.

Bottom line, you dont have to like it--but you can't say there would be Sabbath without the Beatles.

I'm a die hard punk rocker through and through. I pretty much listen to
all forms /genre of punk, metal, hardcore, grindcore, thrash, garage, surf or whatever. Everything from the
Weirdos, Slits, New York Dolls, IrON Maiden, Venom, MOTORHEAD, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, the DAMNED,
Sex Pistols, Clash, Black Flag, Minor Threat, MISFITS, COC, Napalm Death, Satan's Pilgrims, Dead Boys, Ramones,
Weed Eater, Sleep, Sword, Electric Frankenstein, DEATH.......... F**K!!!! there is so many bands I totally dig,
too many to list.

But, being a musician, I listen to everthing. I remember  my high school days, when my
punk and hardcore friends would give me s**t  for listening to Motley Crue, KISS or other
Hair-metal bands..... and my rocker friends would chastise me for listening to punk or hardcore.
What gives!!!! All that music is good.

I do have to say I'm not a fan of Nu-metal. I just can not get into Korn,
Disturbed, LP, or any of the "90's" groups. That is not Metal to me, and doesn't have
to be vintage to be Metal or Punk.

I do have to say I'm not a fan of Nu-metal. I just can not get into Korn,
Disturbed, LP, or any of the "90's" groups. That is not Metal to me, and doesn't have
to be vintage to be Metal or Punk.

As far as Nu-metal goes I liked the first couple of Korn albums, Life of Agony, Orange 9mm and Downset that was about it from the early wave, you know before Nu-metal became the term, never could stand Marilyn Manson or Limp Bizkit.  My wife actually had Evanesence album "Fallen" and didn't care for it, I gave it a listen and actually dug it but I'm not running out to buy their whole catalog either.

I finally bought "Fear of the Dark" and have yet to hear or buy No Prayer for the Dying. I'll get around to it because I'm silly that way. I have been checking out some newer bands but with very little luck. I do like some of the music of Devil Driver. Their first album is killer. "Cry for Me Sky" is a real toe tapper.

OK,that being said. As much as I love old HC/speed metal/death metal etc I find that even tho I still listen to that stuff I prefer good solid HYBRIDS. Viking folk metal-Ensiferum/Korpiklanni and the MIGHTY Moonsorrow/Techno metal/Industrial trance/BIG fan of epic Goth metal such as Tristania/Fantasy metal like Rhapsody, symphometal like Therion. My god that band routinely puts out metalized epic movie sound tracks. Been a fan for like 17 years. Almost anyone with a few years of playing can do a good jam but it takes something WAAY extra to do an epic hybrid and make it work.

This is the MIGHTY Moonsorrow-EPIC Viking Folk with black influence.

Moonsorrow - Pakanajuhla (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LAbZR65Lnw&feature=PlayList&p=9E421F195312C5C4&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=1#)

I love hybrid bands and Moonsorrow is and has been one of the top Viking ones for a few years.
I also call this song the POPEYE mosh. Can ya just picture the guy after a can of spimich slammin around in a pit.

I have to say when Korn came out I thought it was horrible--and I still don't get it.

I dont like Korn, Limp Bizkit or Deftones--though Deftones has one good song.

Life Of Agony was way different then those bands--that was like the epitome of an early Roadrunner band.

Before they started to suck, they were a NYHC band. Keith Caputo's vocals set them apart from everything else that was comming out of that area.

For the record though I do love New York Hardcore, and NJ had some very solid bands--NJ Bloodline, E-Town Concrete, Fury Of 5---but NY started where CA left off with Black Flag.

Agnostic Front and Cro-Mags being the grandaddy--Madball, Skarhead, Crown Of Thrornz, 25 Ta' Life, Merauder--even Biohazard was a DMS hardcore band.

I love that stuff!

Wicked thanks for that post--that was some awesome stuff.

I actually might have to pick up some Ensiferum--that epic "barbarian" folky sound and the borderline black metal vocals over it are a killer combo!

I'm not sure if you have heard of this, but you might dig it--I thought it was cool. Most of their stuff is heavily in the vein of Russian Folk--this seems to have alot more of a metal infusion then what I've heard before, cool nontheless.

Whatever this NuMetal stuff is, I don't feel it. Limp Bisquit, Manson or whatever, just can't get into it. I did like Run DMC/Aerosmith's Walk This Way. Run DMC's song "Raising Hell" whups ass. Anthrax and PE was another cool collaboration. But mostly "rap-metal" has been a joke IMO.

I never went too extreme, although I did have a couple Possessed and Destruction albums. Couldn't get into Black Metal except for Mercyful Fate and that was 180 degrees musically from bands like Mayhem, which I also couldn't get into. Never got into punk and DC was a hotbed of punk in the 80's.

I did like Crue. Shout at the Devil is a cool rock album. GnR's Appetite was another cool rock album along with Van Halen up to 5150. Of course, Zeppelin alot of 70's rock. In the end they were rock, Metal was where I jammed.

Sabbath (Ozzy), Maiden, Megadeth, Ozzy, Metallica, Mercyful Fate were/are some of my all time favorites.

Yeah thats kinda crazy Baron--The Bad Brains are so legendary--right in your backyard!

Alot of the hip hop I dig has tons of metal infusion, and because the metal is genuine it works. ILL Bill, Necro--these guys had everyone from Testament to Obituary and Voivod on their albums, not sampled--co-written songs!

Thats fanstastic!

Aerosmith and RUN DMC was great--(by the way DMC was in my gym again wearing a Ramones shirt!)

Anthrax and PE was just sick.

Obituary has worked numerous times with underground rappers and it was always good.

I hate Marilyn Manson then, and I hate it now--nor do I care about a bunch of fat kids with black lipstick and fishnets on their forearms that I have to push out of the way to get a Slayer t-shirt. LOL--that sounded horrible.

You are Right BlackLagoon about Ill Bill and Necro. Ill Bill stays on my gym rotation (thanks for putting me on them!). I meant the "mainstream" stuff like Manson Bisquit and others. Please.

Never heard Obituary, although I did hear a clip of one of their songs on wikipedia and it sounded cool.

Yeah all that stuff was just filler--I hated having to sit through those acts at Ozzfest.

I can remember Limp Bisquick playing and I was in the parking lot drinking beer listining to Celtic Frost waiting for Sabbath.

Anytime man, and thanks for the good word--I can def send you a disc, but its still pretty unofficial right now, no packaging or anything.

Actually tonight was the just the 2nd practice with our new drummer who just blew my mind--not only as a musician but just a cool dude to hang with. Which to me is really important at this point.

Yes we are somewhat near Kearny, I think you're talking about a place called Screwy Louies--We played there twice and had a great time on both nights.

I think that bar is long gone--for a place that was booking bands like us, I have no idea why--but man-there was always plenty of good looking women in that place!--I miss that dive.

Anybody a fan of Skeletonwitch?

I just started listening to clips of their songs on iTunes. They sound like a good mix of early Megadeth, Slayer, Maiden etc all thrown together. Tough riffs, cool song structure and an overall whup ass attitude.

Don't know much about them but they don't sound flat, unispiring or cliched. They sound fresh with influences from metal that I like. One of the few newer acts I'm interested in.

Wow Baron great minds think alike!

In all seriousness Skeletonwitch is probably my favorite "new" metal act--I love that blackend/thrash sound. A great combo of old school song writing with modern speed and brutality.

I didn't go out and by the new one yet but "Beyond The Permafrost" is both in my car and ipod rotation for the gym--that is one hell of a band!

If you like Skeletonwitch---check out 3 Inched Of Blood--its like black/thrash meets Judas Priest--Night Maruaders or Goat Riders Horde are 2 great songs I recommend!

Wicked that stuff is right up my alley--funny story I almost bought the 1st cd you posted on the album art alone but passed. It's great!

If you guys are into that you might dig Immortal--my favorite black metal band. The early stuff is very raw and almost too fast, it was Mayhem/Darkthrone type stuff.

As they progressed they became way more melodic--almost the Iron Maiden of black metal.

Members of Immortal, Enslaved, Gorgoroth and I think Tyrant (?) came together a few years back and formed a band called "I"--which is like black "rock n roll"--has a very Motorhead feel to it, but just as awesome. Here are some of my favorites from both.

So check this out--my band "manager"-guy who runs the studio that we rehearse at said he could get our CD to Monte Conner over at Roadrunner records. I was very skeptical--and he kept saying "I don't wanna send the cd, until you guys replace the drummer"

I said--"send it, I don't think we'll get signed, but I would love his professional opinion, from what I hear he's a cool guy". So he sent it like 2 months ago.

This is the email that was sent to my manager from Monte himself, then forwarded to my guitarist---it's not the best news, but for me to be compared to David Vincent of Morbid Angel--one of my my influences was just incredible--this is the email that I got this morning, copied and pasted.

Email:**********************

Kenny sent me an email regarding Monte's response.

Greg...

I think you should be very happy with what Monte had to say:

Monte: Locked are really solid with awesome production to boot. It's very old school death metal with a singer who enunciates clearly for a DM singer like David Vincent used to do. That's a plus. But like with any other new band playing old school metal these days, they will have a hard time connecting with the new kids of today. So the sales prognosis is small. BTW, no great loss on the drummer – he was nothing special.

Kenny: We will talk about it... the operative thing he said here was that sales prognosis is small... for Roadrunner... so be it...
Doesnt mean we cant push the band and shop around.

Peace, K.

BlackLagoon, that's cool as hell being compared to an influence. I know you were feeling it afterwards.

The news doesn't sound all that bad, he's basically looking at the bottom line with "new fans" of metal. Sales and talent are often at different ends of the spectrum in the music business, but you already know that. Most of what sells today I would never play in rotation.

From what I heard of Locked, you all whup ass!!! Keep us posted.

Actually the last song on that cd is called "Far Beyond The North Winds"--it's about early black metal legends Bathory. Really the lyrics are all about Quorthon.

Sorry Bro,well actually not. The old thrashy undecipherable voice death metal like this IMO is the epitome of pure crap. Any 16 Y.O kid and his friends with the right equipment can replicate this.
I can do it with power tools pots n pans and phlegm in my throat.
I bought a Canadian Death/Metal/Thrash box set off Ebay several years ago with like 100 bands and equal songs and bonuses for $30. The vast majority of it sucked. 8-10 songs were burned. For every even halfway decent band out there are another 10 that should not even exist. Does anyone remember Sounds Of Death Magazine? I wasted SO much $ on disks they said were "9 skulls" for evil brutality only to find yet another CD of sonic noise and grunting/screaming/vomiting etc etc.
Again,YMMV. 8)

Ahhhh Carnivore--when everyone says "Type-O" I say "Carnivore"! Absolutely love em.

Death Metal--and all its sub genres is definately not for everyone, I can totally understand why it's not for everyone--thats comming from me! and for the most part I'm called a "death metal vocalist".

I think there is a HUGE difference with what the kids are calling death metal, or death core or metal core or whatever the hell it is today--it's pretty bad. To me anyway.

There is def some classic death metal out there that is pretty "tech" and maybe sounds a bit jumbled--personally I think when you go back to the Brian Slagel days, it is near impossible to find stuff out of the 1st wave of death metal--the Tampa Bay guys, that doesnt grove or keep solid timing.

I mean pick up Obituary's Cause Of Death--there is more rhythm on that record than there is on classic rock!

Morbid Angel was groundbreaking, Cannibal Corpse really pushed music and their instruments (and lyrical content for that matter!) right to the edge of "intelligent" withought going over board and making noise--and honestly I think today, it's slower, groovier and better written than it ever was.

I think Deicide went backwards--their best days are behind them and now, it really is becoming noise. Plus, to each their own but you've beat the horse to death with the anti Christian theme--damn man I get it, its just old.

You take a band like Death--who in my opinion exceeds a sub genre and a "label" within metal--its not death metal or tampa style death metal--its brilliant guitar work all the time. It's incredible arrangement every single time---Chuck Schuldiner was a metal GOD and a legend--add all that up and now go read the lyrics to the entire Symbolic album--it's practically a therapy session--beatuiful, real, from the heart and brutal all at once.

I'm not saying I like every death metal band out there---but to say it's all jumbled noise is pretty ridiculous.

And as far as Carcass goes.....much like Napalm Death, the early stuff is a little too grindy for my taste--but holy sh*t, if you don't find the sheer power and musical intelligence in Heartwork--the riffs, the perfect subtle basslines over that acid drenched nasally voice of Jeff Walker---I just can't see how people don't like that stuff.

I love everything from Motorhead to Manowar---death metal is something special and entirely different for...the "select" metal head, and I love being a part of it.

ok so i take it youre not a fan of death metal and such ... i dare you to find some 16 year olds that can replicate any of the bands ive posted ... you absolutely can not ... and you ( personally ) cant replicate it with pots and pans thats just plain ignorant ... i have been buying cassettes , vinyl and cds since death metal came to be in the late 80s and there are alot of great bands and a whole hell of a lot of crap bands too ... same with all genres of music ... how else are you supposed to find what you like ?? ... go ahead and post up some of your favorites ... i listen to everything but country music ... i detest it ... country music makes me want to stomp on kittens while i ice pick my eardrums ... but i can also find musicality in anything

Reread my post. All I said was that IMO the Carcass style of Death Metal was crap. That's all. I like certain forms of DM and have for over 2 decades. DM has been around since 83'-84'. It depends on the the band and the song. I like a certain style.
While not DM Carnivore F-ing kill. I've listened to the double CD 5 times in the last 2 weeks. Jesus Hitler is a personal fave.

I've posted several non DM songs. That's the stuff I mainly listen to now but I still love this...

Entombed - Full of Hell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quWfL7EHQFg&feature=related#)

And this which is one of my all time faves.

Grave - Soulless (Official) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vUoyFCQfPg#)

and this

Hypocrisy - The North Wind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lf1U2sx4Q8&feature=related#)

ok ireread your post and nowhere did i see you mention carcass ... it seemed u were generalizing death metal ... i understand now i think ... symphonies is a masterpiece IMO ... if your post was about the countless bands ripping that sound and style off and butchering it then i agree with you ... IMO i think after Symphonies the band gradually began to suck ... where as Carnivore ruled and Typ O negative just sucked from the get go .... im a big fan of swedish death metal too  .... Grave is awesome too ... played with those guys on the into the grave tour  and Jorgen was a real nice guy ... im partial to into the grave but i really love the demos
Grave - Extremely Rotten Flesh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ODxrPC_rWI#)

im not a fan of the new age death metal or whatever tag they put on it with the pig squeals and ultrafast shredding and drumming that sounds too fast for human beings to play with 10 minute songs ... LOL ... rarely i hear something appealing to me

these guys were really good live ... real tight ... one of the two time i saw them play was at a place called G Wilikers ( Pensauket PA was the city i believe ) and i had taken some acid ... man what a crazy show that was LOL ... Guess it was a miscue. This is what I stated directly under the Carcass link. "The old thrashy undecipherable voice death metal like this IMO is the epitome of pure crap" So I thought it was a given what I meant.
When it comes to DM or anything even close I prefer it mid paced and HEAVY as hell.
That is so cool that you actually played with Grave. I prefer Soulless myself.

The sonic noise power tool potsnpans comment is still true for a lot of bands out there. Mostly thrash and raw black metal. I like some thrash if done well but not a big fan of it. I back in the 80's I bought albums from Destruction ,Kreator , Possessed etc only find that I liked maybe 3 songs on the album. So I made double copies of what I liked and traded them in at the record exchange.

I think one of the worst genres in metal is the raw black metal. To me that just means they just don't have the talent to do it right. Or maybe I'm just clueless and "don't get it".

Good example of sonic noise here and yea I know they eventually changed and evolved.

ah call it a snafu !! ... Soulless is killer too ... i love DM that #1 has to be heavy ... heavier the better ... and #2 i like shorter song structure with varying speeds and some creativity ... 3 - 5 minutes is plenty ... 10 minute songs just make me lose interest as far as DM goes ... bands like Vital Remains just sound too repeticious and i get bored real quick ... you can cut one song into three really ... not really into much black metal ... that song you posted is boring  IMO

wow just found this ... havent heard this since the early 90s

Good posts with Hypocrisy and Entombed--those particular songs aren't the death metal that both bands used to be.

Until recent times, actually--until Wolverine Blues, Entombed was pretty much Sweden's premier death metal act...if you go back to Nihilist--then Unleashed etc etc.

Anyone listining to Death Breathe?? Nick's other band that has Scott Karlson from Repulsion on some tracks? Good stuff if you're a Repulsion fan.

I believe it was with Wolverine Blues that the term Death n Roll came about. Good stuff anyway.

Right on, Wolverine Blues was actually my 1st Entombed album and it's still one of my favorites. After that I went and got the older stuff.

For awhile they really went in the sh*tter--some of that mainstream sounding crap was just garbage. The more recent "Bright Morning Star" was def back to the good stuff---here is a great one off that cd.

Anyone into Grave Digger who changed to just Digger then back gain. There was a 4 year hiatus and then they came back in a new for. These guys IMO are frickin underrated legends doing both just good old head bangin metal to well crafted power metal. Been into them at different levels since the start.

From 1983's Heavy Metal Breakdown

GRAVE DIGGER - "HEAVY METAL BREAKDOWN" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fH1uxaklSA&feature=related#)

And 16 years later. This one just has it all,IMO. Just straight forward speedy metal.

Grave Digger - Excalibur (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlicNcNeQ8o&feature=related#)

And this from 2007.

Grave Digger - Liberty or Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzvm5IiORG4&feature=related#)

Hey Lester, I liked the music on Excalibur and Liberty or Death. Never heard of them, but they sound pretty cool.

I agree with you about raw black metal. I've tried listening to bands like Mayhem but it sounded like noise IMO.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Metal.
Post by: BlackLagoon on May 12, 2010, 08:58:51 PM
The Grave Digger stuff was cool--nice fast paced riffy metal.

I dig alot of old school Black Metal--and this what I've come to understand about it.

In the begining it was basically the punk of Norway/Sweden/Finland--it was more about the statement and the "f*ck your society" then it was the music.

Then good bands that started blending that atmospheric/orchestrated stuff came into the scene--and that is a direct head nod to Emperor. Both 1st wave True Norweigian Black Metal bands--but listin to Mayhem, then listin to Emperor---there is a reason Emperor sold out the LA and NY tour dates in 25 min when they "reunited".

There are still a ton of people out there who are fans of "true kult, grim and frostbitten black metal"--these guys usually have an issue with stuff like Dimmu Borgir or Hecate Enthroned. Why?--because they play their instruments well and it's actually produced??

Personally I do listin to alot of low-fi, early black metal--most of the guys that are worth anything evolved--

But yeah, there is always gonna be that group out there who thinks if it wasn't recorded on a 4 track in a basement with no heat while getting raped by the devil--its not real black metal.

And for the record--the term Black Metal is stolen from Venom like Cronos said "I appreciate the gesture--but what you hear from those bands is not black metal--only Venom is black metal".

That might be true, but Bathory gave it it's sound--and no one since has ever been able to duplicate or surpass that dirty, fast--evil, "Motorhead on steroids" sound.....I love Bathory!

I'll check out Emperor and Bathory, thanks for the heads up Black Lagoon.

In regards to the Mayhem style bands, I never got their whole scene. Taking pictures of your dead former bandmate's suicide and putting it on the album cover? Burning down churches? Hating everybody who's not like you? Look, I'm all for whatever your beliefs are, I understand the need for the image deal, basically whatever you dig right? But come on man, those dudes seemed all wrapped up in some nonsense that they actually believed. You don't see Slayer running around cutting off heads. Then you have the whole Nazi Black metal scene. I'll pass on that kind of hate.

What was next? Burning down churches with people inside? Killing everybody who wasn't in their "inner circle"? Man, how about my foot in your a** dude and shut the hell up! LOL.

I was liking the image of it though. The cover to one Mayhem album was some gothic looking steeples on a blue black background. It looked straight out of a Hammer film. I've seen some other cool looking gothic covers from bands and I've been interested, but after that whole Mayhem nonsense I tuned out anything that was labeled Black metal.

That is what kind of drove me out of the black metal thing--it got to the ridiculous point with the church burnings and all that retardedness. Drove me out as far as "movement" goes.

That album title you're talking about is Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"--which has Funeral Fog on it--great song, great album, but the whole Euronymous thing is stupid.

He was a fake anyway, half of the community called him out back when Mayhem were doing there thing.

Years ago the drummer Hellhammer had a famous quote "Black metal is for white people"--even though you are of South American descent---f'ing retarded.

As far as "national socialist black metal"--I wouldn't ever spend a dime on it or my time listining to it. Same thing with some punk rock--Exploited was/is a great band--I won't support them anymore because of a song "F--k The USA". I am a metal guy and have written some lyrics which def push the envelope--but I have a line and I just don't support stuff like that.

Speaking of lines, I probably already went over it with that last paragraph so we'll just leave it at that.

Anyway I will post some black metal I dig--check it out, and let me know.

Emperor - The Source of Icon E (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw2hD1u2N40#)

Emperor

Dissection - Where Dead Angels Lie(live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj8jLyb8x0w#ws)

A classic Dissection tune (black/death/metal)

Bathory - A Fine Day to Die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyYnstGB3rM#)

Before "black" or "Viking" metal had a name--there was Quorthon and Bathory.

Emperor-NOISE.
Dissection- not bad but kinda long.
Bathory-Def,IMO not one of the best of the discography.

Aside from stuff like Venom this is what I am used to listening to BM wise.

Kalmah - Time Takes Us All (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7ll3ODaOH0&feature=related#)

Thyrane - Dance In The Air (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHo7We33v6I#)

Emperor-NOISE.

LOL--to each their own.

My personal favorite Bathory is "In Conspiracy With Satan"--but I thought the stuff from Blood Fire Death is a good mix of the early Bathory sound--with some of the latter Viking stuff comming though.

That Kalmah was ok--but I could'nt finish listining to it...I'm funny with keys and synth and that was way over produced.

Here is something I've been digging lately...I'm not a huge stoner/doom guy...but these guys are awesome, great for Sabbath fans...and Conan The Barbarian fans...

I tried to listen to Emperor again. The first 35 secs are cool and then it goes into that sonic noise thing.

The Kalmah I posted was not one of their best but I couldn't remember the name of one I really like that is on a Spinefarm comp I have. I dug that out and here it is. BL you probably won't like this much because it is high quality production with synths but has some cool riffs and a bit of straight ahead speed metal. Again another that you have to hit the link.

I think I posted this in last summers Metal thread. The site misses alot of bands but it is a great place to start and do some research and find bands that may interest you. This is how I have found stuff the last few years by writing down names and hitting Youtube. I've spent entire winter Saturday afternoons doing so.  LMK what ya think.

And I agree,we may not see eye to eye on some of the styles but it's cool to see who's into what.

That Kalmah was a little bit cooler.

Emperor def has a tendency to be a bit too "intricate" and under/over produced which makes too much--what I like to call "thin sound".  There is actually better songs IMHO opinion but the sound quality is just horrible to post.

When it comes to actual sound of guitars I'm huge on deep tone, which is probably why I love Obituary...because it's a straight rip of Celtic Frost...both bands are in no way "guitar gods" but man that tone is just like an anvil.

It's def cool to see where everyone is comming from, if I can turn someone on to what I listin to great, if not not--now ya know what you don't like :)

I was just in the gym and this what I was listinig to during my warmup--this is just straight black/thrash. The 1st posting is what turned me onto these guys. The 2nd is a bit different.

A few years ago they released that 1985 Demo--I copped that and it has a great version of Master on it...the timing sounds a bit different on this.

Napalm Death does a sick version of Master on "Leaders Not Followers Part II".

Destroyer 666. The first one was OK. Liked the second one better. Never picked anything up by them back in the day. They were described in a couple mags as being Satanic Nazis. I guess back then the more evil a band was the more likely it was to sell.
Kinda like Brujeria who were supposed to have been notorious Mexican drug runners and killers recording incognito. The truth being they were members of Fear Factory ,Napalm Death ,Faith No More ,and Dimmu Borgir.

Def never heard of that band Monster Isl...which is weird, I'm always looking for bands around here to hang or jam with--this area used to be great for everything from metal to horror punk and even genuine hip hop...now I swear we are the only people writing music in a 50 mile radius! F'ing ridiculous.

But I'll check em out...

Oh yeah man, good call with Incantation--great band, saw the "Darkness Across U.S." tour years ago--Incantation, Immolation and Goatwhore at Obsessions in Randolph NJ--probably late 90's? In support of "Diabolical Conquest".

Fun night, everyone hung out and drank a bunch of beer on a very unseasonably cold, rainy Weds night---man, great memories at that show.

Monster Isl...ever since you posted that BT I have been on a Bolt Thrower kick!

By far this is my all time favorite Bolt Thrower song--and had to dig the cd up and put it in my car.

The second video isn't anything "great" music wise, but I thought the fan made video was off the hook...and it's what BT is about in a nutshell.

Cenotaph, especially the official video--just epitomizes that whole Earache U.K., "grind spliced with metal sound"--the later Carcass stuff, and especially Harmony Corruption from ND--which is when I think Napalm changed for the better.

I never really cared for Scum--once it got more melodic and had solid song structure I dug it.

Same thing with Extreme Noise Terror--Damage 381 is a masterpiece. Barney sang on that and it's just awesome.

Oh yeah I forgot about Mitch...he was the vocalist in Unseen Terror with Shane Embury of ND...that's a pretty cool cd.

I thought they were gonna do a reunion, or maybe re-releases some remastered cds? I dunno..I thought that though.

That Blood Feast was great...I love that early thrash that was just raw and right on the edge of death and black metal. Good stuff.

Rigor Mortis and Blood Feast def have a punk feel to them. Didn't they call this Crossover back in the day? Never much of a fan of Possessed tho I'll admit they were legends in their day.

Possessed is one of my all time favorites, though I actually listin to Beyond The Gates much more than 7 Churches...

Marduk did an awesome cover of "Phantasm" on the Hearse single.

I chatted with Jeff Becerra like 3 years ago? I told him about the Marduk cover and he was like "Whose Marduk and when did they cover my song?" lol.

He had no idea...he's def a cool guy, the fact that he's been touring and playing those songs again in a wheelchair is big balls man, good for him!

QuoteABSCESS, the California-based band consisting of Chris Reifert (drums/vocals; ex-DEATH/AUTOPSY), Clint Bower (guitar/vocals; ex-HEXX), Danny Coralles (guitar; ex-AUTOPSY), and Joe Allen (bass; ex-VON), has officially split up.

Commented Reifert: "The reason for [the breakup] is that Clint Bower has left the band for personal reasons and out of respect to him and to all who have supported us for these 16 years, we have decided to call it a day. Without Clint Bower, there can be no ABSCESS so we won't even try to cheat anyone with something that is not the real thing. [ABSCESS' recently released eighth album] 'Dawn Of Inhumanity' has become our final statement and we feel that it is the perfect way to close the ABSCESS chapter since we must do so.

"Thanks to all of you who were and still are proud to call yourselves ABSCESS freaks!"

Reifert adds, "The other side of this statement is to announce that AUTOPSY is officially active again. With the lineup of Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles on guitars, Chris Reifert on drums/vocals and Joe Trevisano (formerly Allen) on bass, AUTOPSY is now the full-time focus. Longtime friend and bass destroyer Dan Lilker has performed with AUTOPSY at Maryland Deathfest VIII and will also do so at the upcoming Party.San and Hole In The Sky festivals in August of this year before Joe Trevisano takes over full-time on bass. A new AUTOPSY EP and full-length album are in the works and will be released on Peaceville Records, along with an upcoming documentary DVD. Also in the works is a new official AUTOPSY website, so keep your eyes open for that. Any other AUTOPSY sites or pages out there are fan sites and not run by the band.

AUTOPSY!!!! ... just found out the dude that books our shows is good friends with Dan Lilker who has been playing base for  Autopsy shows as of late is trying to get them here in Rhode Island and we're on the bill ... played with them in 91 ... cant wait for this show !!!

I love everything 'bout Metal and more, and all it's forms . Metal has evolved into entity on it's

I'm looking forward to the 16th...Maiden's new album drops! I like El Dorardo, the new song Final Frontier is OK but in the end it's new Maiden.

The show I saw July 20th shows Maiden could still whup ass onstage.

I also am feeling the new songs I got from Ozzy's album. I didn't get the whole thing, but I'm thining about adding the missing ones. Hopefully his tour will come through the DC area soon.

So that being said I have to ask. How much have you delved into other non merch genres. Gothic/Viking/techno/dark/symph etc? As you guys know I LOVE killer 80's90s style metal. Metal Church/Iced Earth/ Hallows Eve/EARLY Metallica etc. It's the other forms I LOVE that much more just from a creative and innovative perspective and how WELL it all jells.

I'm definitely into Coroner. They were kind of Goth Metal, if that's even a genre'?
Celtic Frost, Diamond Head, Budgie, Toxic Holocaust(new) Oh, and yes I am into Goth, and
other types of dark music. Dark Wave, Black Metal, not so much techno, But, I do dig LORDS of
ACID. Wow, there so many different facets of Metal or music period, again I could go on forever.
That being said......... What do you or other UMA'ers feel about all the new METAL/THRASH groups
coming out and rekindling the old school sound?

I'll share a small snipet..

Last night I was on youtube just looking up random stuff before bed and I started looking up Storms, hurricanes etc...finally Storms At Sea and videos takin from ships etc.

So in the mix of all these actual storm videos I see this...Viatrophy.

You can see by the song title why it's in here. I consider myself a pretty big or atleast informed metal fan, especially for things that border on "real" death metal and have never heard of these guys.

Played it and fell in love with the precision and synch of the drums and guitar. Might not be your cup of tea but I dig it and thought I'd share the story on how we sometimes come across our favorite metal by complete accident.

I listen to all sorts of metal. Very little new metal...Lamb of God has a few good songs (the ones where they are not screaming their brains out, but still heavy). I hate screaming and death metal. The only death metal band i like is Death. I also like BLS. But mostly stuff like judas priest, iron maiden, black sabbath, pentagram, twisted sister, slayer, venom....pretty much 70s, 80s, 90s metal. I could go on and on with bands i like.  ;D

You are so not alone there! I'm a big old school death metal head..but if I had a nickel for every person that told me they don't like Death metal, just Death--I'd be rich.

Death isn't regular death metal. Maybe the 1st few albums..but after that it was like "progressive death metal"...I think everyone should give Symbolic a spin once...then go back to Individual Thought Patterns and even Sound Of Perserverance.

The album titles alone don't even sound typical. "Withought judgement what would we do? Perception would increase a million times"--I always loved Chuck's lyrics.

He is pretty much the Dimebag of Death Metal, and was even mentioned in a hip hop song!......just had to rant. R.I.P Chuck!

Agreed. I'm not a huge Killswitch fan, but Dio is not easy stuff to pull off and they did a fantastic job.

There are plenty of covers I like, and plenty I thought should be left alone.

Six Feet Under is well known for doing covers...The 2nd cover album is actually Back In Black in it's entirerty! I didn't care too much for that....but the 1st one was awesome. And they do a killer cover of KISS' War Machine and Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak back on the Maximum Violence cd.

It was a combination of results from multiple polls, as well as several choices from fans and critics worldwide. Sabbath dominated, with Priest and Maiden not far behind. Ample selections from the big four, Testament, Death, Manowar, Motorhead, Opeth and various other classic acts made it. I tried to diversify it as much as I could, while remaining analytical. Metal is so vast and constantly growing, you can imagine how arduous such a task was.

Metal health, my friends. \m/

YAYYY!!!!!
I didn't even notice the Venom video! Man, I have all the albums they made. Wish they'd come to the states. Next year will be the 30th anniversary of Welcome to Hell. They should tour that. I'd also love to see At War With Satan played in it's entirety. I knew there would be some metallers among the classic horror nuts. I see Chaney playing his organ on the music logo. Think he would have dug the many metal songs about him?

OZZY!

I saw Ozzy for the first time last night and it was a great show. It was a mix of classic Ozzy and Sabbath with one song from his new album "Scream". A metalhead buddy refused to go saying Ozzy was washed up and was terrible live. What I saw last night was a dynamic show from a 60 year old singer. I have been a fan of Ozzy since Blizzard/Diary and it was great to finally see him live.

Metal Madness in Baltimore last night.

His new album was cool, I have 5 songs from it.

Halford was cool, his voice still packs metal power. I didn't see all his set, but I did see 2 legendary lead singers of metal that night.

I was never a big fan of Priest and I don't know much of his solo work, but he could still command the stage with his voice alone.

I like Dr. Steel. Most of his songs are major earworms. Some of my favorites are "Lament for a Toy Factory," "Drop Da Bomb" and "Build the Robots."
Speaking of which... I wonder where Dr. Steel has gone to. He hasn't done anything new as of late. I hope he hasn't been silenced by the Illuminati!

They have some good guests and it's the only metal show on that I know of (remember when Headbangers Ball was cool?)

The last new one I saw had Zakk Wylde on...he is a trip. The channel  sometimes follow up new shows with a great concert. I caught Maiden's Flight 666 show the other week.

As for Sinner I disagree. For the style the vocals once you get into it are every bit as good as Udo's or at least very close. Still for a tribute piece very awesome.

Big time.  Got into Lemmy when he was still in Hawkwind.  Haven't seen Motorhead lately but Lemmy has come through town a couple of times in a group called Head Cats that are fun.  The drummer is Slim Jim from Stray Cats.  Can't remember where the lead guitarist came from but he really knows his chops.

It's been awhile since we actually talked about metal. Since seems that all this thread does is post videos so I'll get try to get a conversation started. What is some of your guys favorite metal bands? Do you like death metal, black, classic, thrash,or any other type of metal. I like all different types of metal; the mostly listen to classic metal. But alot of the time I also listen to early death metal, first wave of black metal, and classic thrash. Some of my favorite are Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Kiss (I consider them metal because they pioneered in the METAL look), Venom, Slayer, Early Metallica,
Megadeth (first 4 albums) and many more.

So what is some of your guys favorite metal genre and metal bands?

I agree with you on Black Sabbath and Motorhead.  Their CDs (or whatever format) will always be under my roof.  Ace of Spades was a classic for me.  Sabbath's first album is what got it for me with its trend towards prog though Paranoid is as good.  Never thought of Kiss as metal but I can see it.  The costumes and stage act was right there.  I wonder if you could include Steppenwolf since Born to be Wild was the first mention that I know of for "Heavey Metal (thunder)"  I like some of the newer bands as well.  I've heard Tool described as metal and as post-metal.  Either way, they're one of the top bands in my collection.

Tool is pretty cool, i think their drummer is really good. To me, Undertow is their best.

I agree with you on kiss being metal, there music isn't metal.
The first time I heard Black Sabbath was amazing. My dad had the We Sold Our Souls For Rock n Rol on record, and it was so awesome. I've been into them ever since.

to a certain genre'. KISS, is that is definitely difficult to catergorize.  >:D

Kiss also struck me as theatrical rock in the vein of Alive Cooper and Arthur Brown.

I always liked classic metal, heavy metal, early [classic] thrash, early death metal, early black metal [first wave of black metal, like it was mentioned above] I don't like new metal bands at all. some of my favorite metal bands are Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Dio, Black Label Society, Mercyful Fate, early Metallica, Megadeth, Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, White Zombie, Scorpions, Saxon, Death, Venom, Slayer, Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, Pantera, Celtic Frost, Napalm Death [early], Motley Crue, Sepultura, Testament, Cannibal Corpse [1st album and some early demos], Overkill, Machine Head, Savatage, Sodom, Danzig, etc, Since there is so much to branch out on that's all I put. I guess you can get a general idea.

Cannibal Corpse is pretty cool, i can only listen to them in doses (1-2 songs at a time). Their 1st album is alright, it seemed more faster than the other CC albums. I like the butchered at birth album pretty well. The song Gutted is really good. I'm not a Cannibal Corpse fan but they are easily one of the most interesting death metal bands. Also, it helps that there lyrics and albums covers are pretty epic!

I am starting to listen and like death metal more. I have am now listening to metal bands just like onslaught, possessed, deicide, autopsy, and entombed. With a little more knowledge of bands i already listened to like celtic frost, death, and obituary. If anyone has any bands to suggest that I listen to for the basics of death metal and early death metal. I would be glad to listen to them.

Does anyone like the bands onslaught, possessed, deicide, autopsy, or entombed?

a metal thread on a universal monsters forum? **** yea!

i grew up on sepultura, deicide, cannibal corpse, obituary, bolt thrower, etc. my brother was a singer in a local death metal band so he was definitely an influence on my musical taste. from there I started getting into more punk influenced metal like crust and grindcore. bands like Dystopia, his hero is gone, ASSUCK, phobia, AT THE GATES (album Spaughter of the Soul is the best album ever made, btw) for way too long it seemed like the only bands I listened to were from the 90s. but there is some great new music coming out; bands like NAILS, the secret, all pigs must die.

This kind of metal hasn't progressed since the 80's, I suppose that is a good thing if you like the old tried and true!  I love it when I hear people say, "Oh, if you like this band then you should check out this new band!", or "These guys are great they sound just like."......If I want to hear, let's say Black Sabbath, then I will listen to them, not some new band that is trying to do their sound, whether intentional or not?!  A lot of these newer heavy metal bands (I know Darkest Hour has been around for awhile, as have most of them now.) are just doing Slayer (and a handful of other early death metal bands)....only they don't really call it Death Metal now!  There were enough bands doing mediocre Slayer and death metal back in the 80's, I just don't see how anyone finds anything special about bands like this!?

As far as the Nu Metal, most of these acts are of the rap/metal variety......something that Beastie Boys, Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies were doing...again back in the 80's!

I don't see any bands standing out today and leading the pack the last time that happened was the 90's; Nirvana, Pantera, White Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, Korn and I wouldn't even include most "grunge" bands because to me a lot of them were just taking their music back to 70's style rock.  Seems like every generation/era has it's own music and bands that rise above and separate themselves from the norm but I just don't see it happening in metal today.  I'm happy that metal continues in whatever form, I'd rather see kids getting into it rather than pop or rap but I just don't find any excitement in it as far as new bands.

Wow!
Here we go....... Although, I hear what you are saying and see what you have written, I disagree. Maybe I'm reading into what you
wrote to deeply? In reality, there are plenty, or should I use the word plethora? ( PLETHORA, one of my favorite words...lol!) There
are a plethora of great METAL bands in the music world, who defintely STAND OUT. Of course, I also realize, not all
bands are original, mEtal or any other genre' of music. Let's be honest, most bands borrow or are influenced in some way. Maybe
       derivative on some level? Sure.

Okay, what point was I making?! Oh yeah. Most of the metal bands I listen to these days are not radio-friendly in any way.
The Metal bands I listen to, have an extreme cult following. As they should. What band doesn't. Rhetorical. But, I totally,
truely believe, most up-and-coming metal bands STAND OUT.

       Here's some examples:

HIGH ON FIRE - "Rumors of War" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89h-X-tZa_w#ws)

High on Fire def rocks..... About metal today.... Put it this way... If you actually play guitar or some relative instrument, then you already know which newer metal band separates themselves from the pack. There is def some good, alot of heart put into metal, that just straight up kicks your ass, out there. It's a wonderfull thing when you find something new. It's always nice to hear the old original stuff that always rocks out, but it is damn exciting to hear something new that you can really appreciate.

Ummm....ok?!?  That's like saying you have to play guitar to appreciate how different Hendrix was from the "pack" or any other influential musician/artist that stood out and invented a new sound/style?!?  I love punk rock but let's face it for the most part the bands are cookie cutter, there are really only a handful of artists that separated themselves and created a true original (even reinvented original) sound, same thing goes for metal (and any music genre) and that creativity has been stagnate for a long time.  I'm not saying there aren't bands out there carrying the torch but they aren't leading the way with it either.  I wish I could find a newer metal band out there to get excited about again, one where I would actually want to go see them in concert or hell even invest in a cd but it just ain't happening for me.

You dont have to play just guitar, you can play any instrument. When you play, you more than less come across a little better understanding of who steals from who and who stands out. You appreciate  it more. I do also love punk rock, but honestly there hasnt been shat worthy of listening to in quite a while. It is hard to find new stuff coming from either genre, but there most definitely is new, amazing music coming over the horizon. You just have to look and keep a open mind.

Metal has gone on to other directions or subsets such as death, etc.  The Nordic countries have long had a stranglehold on the world metal scene.  Has any of those directions felt different for you or maybe the next phase in the synthesizing of something new?

I really dig the new Lamb of God. Thouh I am not impressed with a lot of these so called "hardcore" "emo" and "screamo" bands that are out now. I like European bands these days more then most American ones. My favorites include Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Sabbath/Ozzy, Sepultura, Kiss, Priest, Maiden, Anthrax, Overkil, Exodus, Testament, Fear Factory, Zombie, Manson, Children of Bodom, In Flames, etc.

Some of you may not consider this metal... and I don't care.  ;)  It was stuck in my head all day and it is awesome. Enjoy

GRAVEYARD - Hisingen Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnGBa8dVm6k#)

Graveyard. I love this band from Sweden. Yes, they sound straight from the 70's but it's sounds better than most of anything new I've heard.

Ghost "Ritual" (OFFICIAL) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PakoE1eBps#ws)

Ghost. I love that they sound like Mercyful Fate and Sabbath. It's a fresh take on an old school sound.

I like this style of metal/hard rock.

I never got into the SlipKnot, Limp Biskit, Manson or any of what people may call "nu-metal". I like mostly clean vocals and at least a hint of melody and songwriting skills. I like that bands are "re-discovering" this classic sound. It makes me want to buy new music.

King Giant from VA also has a heavy Southern rock sound.

Nu-Metal is such a joke. I particularly like all forms and sub-genres of Metal. Except, nu-metal.

I just discovered this band today. They are from Norway and are mostly unknown. I was shocked to find out that they are a new band with the first demo tape released in 2010. They have an awesome gnarly raw late-70s feel

Baron
Graveyard and Ghost were good and would have prospered in the 80's but for me now just did not have the balls I'm looking for in this style.

Steve - Devil was good and for a first effort shows promise.

Bought this back in 85". Fake band and only release by members of Virgin Steele ,Pentagram and a couple others. Pulled off as a first effort by H.S kids with on purpose lower production it had a low print run and is actually worth some $$. The back of the album says "if you think we suck .. we do .. Our G.F's have big T...'s. Fun stuff. Pack yer bong slam a beer and ruin the paneling in yer dads basement den.

Any fans of Electric Frankenstein, a heads up: their California tour left them in quite a financial hole. They may have to cancel their upcoming European tour. If you can, now would be a good time to order a CD, poster, T-shirt, or whatever. BTW, I'm NOT affiliated with the band in any way, just a friend of a friend of the band.

Very true, there are always going to be imitators....often before there are innovators!!  I just happened to click on these guys from a post on Black Sabbath's FB page.
