So I'm new to posting threads here on the Universal Monster Army....I'm a collector of vintage Halloween items (mostly tin and plastic toys). Introduce yourself to me, and show me some of your vintage collectibles. Judging from what I've seen so far, I've already prepared my feet to have their socks knocked off by your awesome ghoulish finds, so fire away!
By the way, you are looking at a tin noisemaker made by the Kirchhof company. I picked this little guy up at an antique market a few years ago near where I dwell around Hell Michigan (I don't actually live in Hell, but it is a stones throw away from where I live....kinda out near the Ann Arbor neck of the woods), and got a groovy deal on it.
Some call me "Tim".
i'm a collector of a few things. let me gets some pics together.
Halloween stuff! Oh yea! Chance to show my Weird-ohs stick thing, which I am told, was carried around by a child as he or she went door to door on Halloween.....

Sweet!! I just won an auction for a vintage Topstone rattle stick that kids use to carry around Trick or Treating. It's very Weird-Ohs looking as well. I'll post some pics of it when it shows up in the mail.
That weird-ohs stick kicks ass!
this little guy is probably one of my favorite halloween items, not too rare or valuable, a bit worn, and made of plastic. but he is perfect to me, this little dude just reminds me of being a kid at halloween.

I will be posting alot more on this fun thread! Lets see some more stuff guys!
The little Fun World Skeleton is a great piece! And I might add it's great to see you have a year round Halloween corner!
Jeff! Ya stuck a tin clown bank on the Halloween shelf? What on earth would give you the opinion clowns can be scary? Ha!

This was the vintage Topstone Witch Goblin rattle I won....I'll post a better pic when I get it.

Clowns are disturbing. That J. Chein clown bank you have is a dandy!

for the most part you just gotta get a feel for it. Go with your instincts and don't over pay. Go to thrift stores this time of year.

These are my Rushton Scarecrow Sam dolls, probably from the 1950's-1960's. I have a fourth one, but he needs some minor surgery before he'll be presentable. Rushton specialized in vinyl-faced dolls and stuffed animals, and they also did many seasonal toys for Christmas, Easter, and Valentine's Day. As far as I can determine, Scarecrow Sam is as close as they got to doing Halloween dolls.

I can give you a few suggestions....There's basically nothing that's made of tin anymore when it comes to noisemakers. Most of the companies printed their names on items. Kirchhof, J Chein, U.S. Metal Toy Mfg., and T Cohn are the most well known makers of the tin toys. Rosbro, E. Rosen, A.J. Renzi, Clinton Toy Corp., Empire Plastics, Bayshore, Blinky, Fun World, and Topstone Rubber Company all made lots of the plastic toys and blow mold lights.
About 95% of the newer stuff is all made in China, and usually marked China. If you see a "Made in USA" marking, chances are good that it is an older item (Empire Plastics and A.J. Renzi only went out of business about 10-15 years ago). There are a couple American companies that still make stuff (General Foam Plastics is one).
Today a lot of stuff is very cute, and not meant to scare kids. A lot of the vintage items have a more creepy look to them.
Beistle and HE Luhrs were the kings of cardboard Halloween decorations....I'm not into them as much collecting wise, but some early stuff (pre 1960's) can fetch a very high price for the right items.
If you ever have any questions on an item, you can always email me, and I'll try to help you evaluate it. And I hope it's OK to say this, but you can take a look at my website (I've got dozens of pictures and prices on there).
After my grandmother passed away I was helping my mom clean her place and managed to get all of her old Halloween decorations.

So I have been seeing a lot of lame "shrunken heads" in stores these past few Halloweens. Everything from decapitated clowns to witches and vampires. I have yet to see a good reproduction of a shrunken head like I remember were sold when we were kids. The only thing that came even close was one for Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean costume accessory kit and it was also lame and disturbingly pink with white hair. Back in the 60s it seemed like every hot-rodder had a rubber shrunken head hanging from their car's rear view mirror, or at least so my dad tells me so. My dad had a cool one bought in the 60s and I bought one in the 80's that was not as cool with its over-sized nose but was way better than the junk out there today.
I got to thinking, what happened to my old one? I went in search in my dad's camel backed old sea chest we lovingly refer to as the monster box as that is where all of the Halloween masks and costumes were stored over the years. Bingo! I found my dad's but mine was nowhere to be seen. Oh well his was cooler anyways. It was in pretty sad shape though. The lips had been sewn and re-sewn shut multiple times over the years and the rubber molding of the face was losing its shape. The hair had mostly fallen out or been cut due to multiple irremovable tangles from being tossed around over the years. My dad had painted and repainted it several times with the paint flaking off and the last paint job had some unsightly eyebrows reminiscent of Groucho Marx. So an over haul was in order. I repainted it and added some little embellishments like shark teeth, bones, and shells of course sewed on some new hair. I was about to put eyebrows on it but then realized of course that most Amazonian indigenous tribes pluck or shave their eyebrows and that the Shuar tribe of the Jivaro Indians that made shrunken heads rubbed all of the facial hair off anyways. The end result is a little more stylized than a real shrunken head and I also added some war paint. I was pleased how it turned out.

Thanks for the info, I'm sure there's a few choice vintage pieces at Moms still. I've seen a few displays at antique collectives with items for sale too, just need to eduficate :o myself a bit.
Ghost....Great collection!! I especially like the crank up siren with the witch. There's one for sale online right now, and that was the first one I had ever seen.
The shrunken head looks fantastic as well!
Anyone have any vintage Universal Monsters jointed die cuts?

Man, I don't have
any vintage Halloween pieces (just past few decades), due to errr.... being raised in a religious household. And yet, Halloween is one of the most fun holidays. Even tho I never get to decorate, I ferociously guard my bits in a storage shed 'just-in-case'.
I'm really enjoying the pics everyone is posting!
Here's a Hallmark Halloween Ghost Whistle I've had forever. Tried real hard to find some more info on it, but I couldn't. 99% sure it's Hallmark, but either the markings are too small or there aren't any. Makes a neat SHEEEEEEOOOOOOO sound when you blow and pull out the pumpkin slide. His age is turning the white a mellow yellow color. You blow on his toes ( no comments, Scatter)..

Hey bigbud, that's a neat ghost whistle you've got there. I haven't seen one of those before. As far as the blowing on toes goes, it could have been designed worse. I know there's some old Batman squirt gun out there where the trigger is where his male anatomy should be.
My mom managed a Hallmark store for over 10 years, from the late 70s to the late 80s, and while that particular item doesn't ring a bell, the pumpkin is very similar to other pumpkin figurines I have from Hallmark.

hi ya Chris! If you ever get a chance to show those pics to your mom I'd sure like to verify the ghost whistle being a Hallmark. It definitely dates back to the mid 70's when Hallmark started gearing up production of Christmas ornaments and the small sculpted items for Easter, Halloween and Valentines.....Bud
Well, unfortunately my Mom passed on nearly 12 years ago. But I do have some similar pumpkins that came from Hallmark stashed with our Halloween decorations. I'll be digging those out in the next few weeks and will be sure to post some pics of them here.

Ghost- You have touched our Halloween lovin' hearts with your perfect photos! It's amazing that you were able to hold onto something so precious for all those years! :) And your little one is adorable! (but of course, you and your brother were the original cuties). I saved a lot of my kids' things from the 80s, but they always broke the handles on their jack o lantern pails, so who knows where they went.
bigbud- you are a constant source of surprises! I love that Rocket Witch- Burnin' up her fuse up here alone.....
lbl- Holy Halloween! You have an outstanding collection!! Man o Man- I LOVE your shelves of goodness! The pail with the witch that stands out on it is incredible! Were any of these things your as a child? And your light up haunted house is a work of art. It looks brand new- Beautiful collection and I'm so happy I got to see it {^_^}

LBL.... the haunted house next to the pumpkin-man with his hands in his pockets....is that a large plastic blow-mold? Very impressive....don't recall that one!
That one holding his mouth agape ala Freddy, creepy coolness
Thanks for the comments everyone...I really appreciate them
charp - Unfortunately very few of my childhood Halloween items survived the "purge of Mom"...I've had to hunt down and replace most of my childhood goodies
bigbud - yes it is a light up blowmold...I have a few more recent ones (one orange and one green) but that one's pretty unique, haven't seen one before or since
The pig-out pumpkin is a really neat one...I also have a green Frankenstein in the same style, I just haven't taken pictures of it yet.
I don't have old Halloween toys, really, but I have a couple of Gurley candles from the 60's (pumpkin man, witch, owl) and I have some old treat bags from the 50's-60's, and one of my personal favorite Halloween things is the 7" "Hallowe'en Spooky Sounds" sound effects record from 1968, I think?
Halloween has always been one of my favorite fascinations, and I LOVE the spooky atmosphere in these older images. The classic witches, jack o lanterns, black cats, etc., these images have fantastic atmosphere!

LOVING all the sweet vinatge Halloween goodness gang! Here are all of my vintage (and one new) blowmolds!

This is my favorite topic! You all have so many wonderful things, and the blowmolds are blowing me away!
RedKing- Is that purple jack o lantern very old? I don't think I've seen a purple one before :)
I did see that Walmart has a giant cage (like they keep the bouncy balls in) of blow mold jack o lantern candy buckets of many colors this year. I was thinking of making a totem pole structure out of the different colored pumpkins, if I have enough time. I think they are $1-$2 a piece.

all the cool stuff on here really gets me even more exciting for Halloween! however, I am always excited for Halloween!
Char and Hep, the purple pumpkin is the new one. I just got him at Dollar General for a buck-they have umpteen orange ones and just this one purple one. It's marked 1997 or 98 on the back of it. I love the after Halloween sale where I can pick up tons of goodies at 50-75% off!
I always see a nice selection of Halloween at Target. They had those cool Screamers just last year....may have them again....I'll have to check........
Great stuff, nothing is like vintage Hallowe'en decos. They conjure such warm and fuzzy feelings.
I love the old Luhrs/ Beistle designs especially the Luhrs versions, and those embossed German decos are fantastic. I'd love to get the big red devil. Speaking of vintage decos.
Anyone familiar with the jointed "Lightning bolt body" devil etc... I realized they look like Reddy Kilowatt, lol.
I only collect blow mold stuff, especially lights. Folks n here have some nice ones. Stuff that has eluded me for awhile, like the Scarecrow pumpkin man in Ramsey's pic. And I just cannot find the light similar to the JOL on the corn shock. It's similar, instead of corn, it's more like a gourd with a witch on it.
Here is most of them if you can make them out, a bit cluttered.

So much cool vintage Hallowe'en! Wow!
Dr. Terror....Cool collection! I have one of the Bayshore witch lamps in my collection too.
Just found these three cloth masks the other day, Devil, Witch, and Clown. appear to be old store stock and never used with tags. anybody know when they were made?
I love the small print on the tag. Non-Poisonous.... would you assume they were poisonous otherwise??

Jeff, I remember those vaguely....they were abit itchy if I remember right. Very colorful ones you have there......and a near-Frankenstein! That's pretty nice! (or is that a witch?)
So 50s or 60s ? thats the era i was thinking, with the colors and lines. I thought it was a frankenstein at first, but then I thought the dot on the nose might be a wart? I like the frankenstein idea better!

Everytime I see Halloween blow molds, I get very nostalgic for my childhood. What a great feeling!
QuoteHere's a Hallmark Halloween Ghost Whistle I've had forever.
Bigbud, I finally got around to snapping some pics of some of my old Hallmark stuff. I think the pumpkins have a very similar feel.
This pic has such a pumpkin candle, along with other items my mom brought home from the Hallmark store she managed for over 10 years. We had a ton of Hallmark Halloween stuff. Also stuff by other manufacturers Hallmark carried, like the Russ Berrie tiny Frankenstein monster and witch up front. The wax haunted house air freshener came from a Sundry Store, I recall. There's a cake decoration recast from the MPC Pop-Top witch. I painted it sometime in high school. It's all orange black and flesh underneath, I believe.
My mom bought a lot of ceramic stuff from a local artist named Pat Tussey who did a really nice job with the items. This Halloween village was the centerpiece in our house every October.
Mrs. Tussey also did the "Great Pumpkin" looking character here. I got the bendy Dracula last year at Dollar General, but he has a very vintage feel about him. The ghost and witch candles were made by Hallmark, and the little haunted house was another cake decoration.
My old Empire blow-molded ghost got up against something brown in storage over the years. I also painted the skull with glow-in-the-dark paint at some point. The vampire cookie cutter came from...you guessed it...Hallmark.
These aren't very old, since I got them about 10 years ago or so, but they are nice decorations using Lugosi and Karloff's likeness, and we always display them in our front living room windows.
This mummy is dated Beistle, 1995. I have lots of other Beistle pieces throughout the house and on our windows, along with several blow-molds out in the yard, but all of them are from the 90s on.

I really like the raccoon! Is that a Hallmark piece?
???
^Yes, that's actually Rick from the "Shirt Tales" line from Hallmark. Hallmark did cards, figurines, decorations, etc featuring these cute animal characters with sayings on T-shirts, and then Hanna-Barbera made a cartoon that ran several years in the early 80s. Reruns still run on Boomerang.

Halloween is what I collected the most. This pic is just of stuff I have in a cabinet that I'd originally posted in a now dead thread. Diecuts are the hardest to show as they all lay in drawers... and drawers. I think I must have hundreds of diecuts.
Halloween here in NJ was a complete bust this year. We are very fortunate to have our home, so many were not so lucky.
Very cool collection! I love vintage Halloween stuff! I don't know why, but until just now, I never know this thread was here! Ironically I just picked up a cool vintage Halloween piece earlier today and posted it over in the "Daily Finds" thread! This was the piece I picked up today, as I said on the other thread I don't know much about it other than it was made in Germany in the earl 1930's and was sold as a Halloween novelty and, in certain parts of Europe, as a Christmas novelty that depicted Krampus...

Hey creaturerevenge....Cool devil horn! I have some good news and bad news for you....
The good news is, that's a very cool item! The bad news is, unfortunately that particular item is a very common item that is being made as a reproduction. These horns are actually pretty rare, and tough to come by, and lately there have been a lot of them surfacing. Have you had it in your collection a long time, or did you buy it recently?

I picked it up this past weekend in an antique store in Asheville, NC. Not sure if it's a reproduction or now. The guy dealt in really unusual antiques and specialized in vintage holiday items. He had quite a bit of vintage Halloween stuff as well as old Christmas items. I only paid about $50 for it so I wouldn't be too heartbroken if it was a reproduction, but it would be nice to know for sure. Is there anything specific on it I should look for to tell me if it's really a vintage piece or not?

Like a lot of the "GERMANY" marked pieces, yours seems to have no age or wear. The likelihood of reproductions abounding seems fairly certain, with "antique" dealers taking advantage of new collectors' inexperience. That does not mean, however, that old stock doesn't exist or has not been found even in their original shipping cases. I will say the price you paid is what a dealer with doubts might charge. Genuine 80+ year old German devils are highly sought after and should be quite pricey.

Great stuff! How long have you been collecting?
???
Off and on most of my life. Really been able to focus on it maybe the last 20 years. Ive got rooms full of different stuff lol. Universal Monsters, Lemax Spookytown, Dr Dreadful, horror posters, toys, games, movies... I love it all!
Heres a couple more I have. Not necessarily "vintage" but I dig em. The Haunted House has a "School House Rock" vibe to it, at least to me. And I just thought this was a cool Frankensteins Monster.

It's a sparkler; push the plunger at the handle and the inside of the litho disc spins and generates sparks...
I have the same whistle. I have had it for years and it is clearly marked on the bottom of the white part covering the ghost's left leg. No date, just Hallmark Cards. I am thinking of adding it to my Hallmark ornament live auction that my husband and I are having in a few days. We have 1000+ 70s=90s ornaments and maybe there will be a big enough audience to make it worthwhile to let it go. I will let you know what it sells for.

The artwork on these are simply beautiful! You'd be hard pressed to find stuff like this in stores today.
Beistle was famous for their 22 and 55 inch die cut skeletons. However, this 66 inch one, probably made in the late 70's, is the only one I have ever seen. There seems to be no information on it. Since I have concluded that it is authentic, perhaps it was a special for one season or even one that may not have been widely distributed. It is still sealed in the package and in good condition which makes it extremely rare.

'Great find! I had that one in 1968, and so it is at least that old. For Halloween 2014 I found a slightly smaller version (same exact print) which I placed on our front door. It has now been moved to our extra bedroom door (the man cave door with my Batman and electric guitars and costumes and masks in it)... Once again, great find!

Getting a pic of the back might be tough because it is hanging behind a wall of masks up near the ceiling. However, here is a close up of the front of the card.

Just saw it. It states it is 5 feet. Mine is the 66 inch version. I have never seen a 66 inch version other than mine. The one I have is single sided and I believe the neck is reinforced.

It's made of heavy rigid foam and came with a tag which I have around here somewhere. It has a battery powered light in the bottom. I've looked for these things since but came up empty. Anyone else seen these at Party City, or anywhere for that matter?
I'm pretty sure I've seen these at CVS Pharmacy.
halloween decorations have always held a special place for me. i think it has to do with my birthday being a few days before and my mom would usually put up the decoration on or the day before my b-day. even my parties were halloween themed. 1 thing i always loved was this hounted house centerpiece. the original went missing sometime in my teens or twenties and when i started collecting as an adult, i went in my moms attic looking for it. GONE! asked mom if she remembered it. vaguely. asked my brothers if they had any momories of it. no luck. i had no idea who made it or what year it came out. i searched ebay all the time, but having only simple search terms it never turned up (i just searched haunted house centerpiece - lots of the same hallmark ones over and over, never this one)
well about 2 years ago at an estate sale, while digging thru a box of holiday decorations, i see this. i started to shake. no joke, i had to compose myself so not to blow the deal.
it was $1 in its original envelope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yesterday was the first time i assembled it in like 40 years (yeah, i sat on it for 2 years without the guts to actually put it together. it's in such nice shape i didnt want to crease it)
anyway, here it is, the vintage Paper Art "horrific halloween" haunted house, in all its lowbrow glory. along with some rosbro and wiltons plastic stuff.

Probably made by "Belco Lights Corp" it dates to the 1970s. The back is the simple haunted house, the front has '70s era stickers covering the front.
There are at least four listed on eBay right now, some priced right, some expensive:
