Andy might kick my butt for bringing this up in a public forum, since he's been pretty private about it until now. But oh well, tough. I'm in Sao Paulo where his boot can't reach me.
His daughter, Mia, is having a very serious operation Tuesday (unless the schedule has changed). How serious? VERY serious. Andy can elaborate if he wants.
This is a sweet little girl who calls me "Uncle Robby," even though she knows my name is Raymond. I am definitely looking forward to seeing her when I return!
If you are the praying type, say a prayer for Mia. If, like me, you are not the praying type, then just send her some good thoughts and give Andy your moral support.
Thank you!
Done and done! Hoping it works out good for everyone involved.
No problem Ray. My wife and I were not blessed with children of our own, but we have many nieces and nephews who are near and dear to us. Best of wishes to Mia on a speedy recovery.
It's always a tough time when illness strikes and for it to be ones child then it is unbearable. I will most certainly give my support to Andy and his family and especially to his little one, Mia.
I am the praying type and rest assured that I will be sending up prayers for Mia and her lovely family.
I'm not the churchified type but I do dial direct when chatting with The Old Man and will include Mia & family tonight when I ring Him up.
"Meek"
Positive vibes to Mia, Andy, family and friends!
Positive vibes from the aging hippie contingent here, too. Andy and family have all my warmest and most strengthening thoughts going out to them.
Raymond,Mia and Andy will be in my prayers. All good thoughts for this family in this stressful
time.
Prayers and positive vibes to the Andy family. It's so tough and our heart goes out and we will be thinking of you. Be strong my friend!

Wow, I wasn't expecting this thread! I don't mind, though; many of you are my closest friends and the UMA really is a family of sorts for me.
My four year old daughter Mia has had scoliosis - curvature of the spine - since birth. Recently, the curvature got to the point that it became life threatening, and she was not thriving or growing because of the compression of her internal organs and the stress on her respiratory system. So, her doctors felt as if surgery was an absolute necessity. She's been in "halo-traction" at the hosipital for 6 weeks now, and she will be having her big surgery tomorrow where they will put growth rods on her spine to straighten the curve and balance out her chest cavity. It is a very major surgery, and especially at her age and size, there are substanital risks involved. The good news is that Mia is a fighter. She's feisty, smart and never gives up. So, that combined with all the prayers and well-wishes and support from our friends gives me lots of hope. Here's a shot of her in the courtyard at Shriner's Hospital where we are now:
So keep her in your thoughts, and thanks again to you all. We have the best friends that anyone could ever hope for, and Shriner's is providing the best medical care available. I'll keep everyone posted as things progress.
Her halo-traction looks like a crown on the princess that I'm sure she is to all that know her. Years ago, I had interaction with a lot of children that ha some tough health problems. What I always found so amazing was that no matter how severe the problems kids face, they still find a way to play and be kids. The Dora stickers on her halo show me that Mia (beautiful name by the way) is no different. She's a treasure.
Thank you Andy for posting that picture. She is indeed a little princess.
Best to your daughter. It is times like these that I am proud to be a Mason. Are you a brother? The hospitals and what they do for kids and their families was a big reaon for my joining. How is the Shriner hospital treating you? They are some of the best.
Sending all the best thoughts for everyone!
Mia is in our hearts and in our minds. We all wish her all the best. And to Dad and Mom the wishes to remain calm and the knowledge that everything will turn out all right. We're thinking of all of you.
I am very new to the board, and haven't yet been able to meet any of you. I was debating about posting on this particular thread, and then I saw her picture. Rest assured, this old unknown primate is saying a monster-size prayer for her and her family.
Prayers and best wishes from Kentucky.
George
Best wishes to little Mia and her family.
Andy, prayers will be sent to you and your family!
Please keep us updated!
GOD BLESS MIA!
Brian
All my best wishes and prayers to you all Andy.
Dear Andy-
Heartfelt prayers from here for Mia - and for you & the rest of your family.
Sincerely,
-Craig
Andy,
Princess Mia is beautiful !!
If good wishes and prayers will do the trick she will be right as rain in no time at all.
God Bless.
All the Best and a heartfelt "Viel Glück!" to the
little princess Mia from the other side of the world
as well !!!
Rainer E.
Andy, I've been praying for your daughter ever since you shared this with me weeks ago. I too was in a Halo after a drunk driver hit me head on so I know what Mia is going through. She's a brave little girl.
A big prayer has been sent your way.
God bless you all and here's hoping for a speedy recovery!
Mike G
Dear ANDY & MIA & FAMILY,
... I, too, {late, in receiving this information, as work has had me worn out & off-line} shall be praying, for you, all, a lot. I look, forward, to reading a positive outcome, of this serious episode in MIA'S Life.
EXANIMO EVERNOW,
TIMOTHY FRANCIS, B.G.G.
The operation looks like it's going to be tough but I bet she'll come out of it better than ever.
This is something that has been on my mind for a few weeks now, I'm glad that Ray created a thread about it. I've been kind of anticipating 08/05 anxiously for the last week and a half or so. I guess I'm more anticipating 08/06 when I hope that Andy can report everything went as planned with the surgery. Its a hard thing to have a child in the hospital at all, more so when its serious.
Thank you Andy for posting little Mia's photo, I was moved by her smile and the courage it showed. It's strange that the media paints a profile of courage by showing how tough the person is, but I have found in my life that the real brave ones wear a smile with pride and in turn have an inner glow that provides comfort to those around them. Andy feel proud that your daughter is one of that fold and God bless little Mia in her time of need.
Hi all,
I am happy to report that the operation was a success, and Mia is in the ICU as I type this. The surgery took about 4 hours, and the results are amazing. She is almost perfectly straight and her chest cavity is right in place. No complications thus far, and things are looking good. The next few days will probably be a real challenge; recovery from this type of surgery can be, but she really is a tough little bugger.
I want to thank you all again for your outpouring of support. I believe that these things make a big difference, and I attribute today's success to a lot of things; you all included. Your posts have touched Amy and I in a very emotional way, and we thank you.
So now we are off to grab some rest...talk to you soon.

Yay Mia!! For recovery, I recommend lots of love and cartoon watching.
Great news, Andy! Give Mia all our love and tell her we all wish her a speedy recovery! Post updates when you have some free time.
Andy ,that is wonderful news !!! Give the little princess a big hug for all of us.
You and Amy take care of yourselves as well.
After happily celebrating my grandson's first birthday today, it really brought me down to Earth tonight when I read this post about little Mia's surgery. But its great to hear her operation was successful and I will certainly be praying for her continued healing and speedy recovery! God bless Mia, Andy and the whole family!
I am very glad to hear this news, and continue to send all good thoughts and wishes. Perhaps a gift basket can be arranged by the UMA folks...
Glad she came through with flying colors, it will only get even better from here :)
Thanks for letting us know that everything went well. Now for a speedy recovery and a wonderful life!
Dear ANDY, MIA & FAMILY,
... Continued Prayers, for Healing & All Blessings, from this Heart, in the Land, Beyond My Computer Window!
EXANIMO EVERNOW,
TIMMY & THE BARON & FRIENDS, GOO-O-OODD-D!, B.G.G.
Praise God! I'm so happy to hear that Mia is doing well. Andy, you and your family were on mind the entire day yesterday. What a blessing. What a relief. Continued prayers will go up with both palms to the sky. Get some much needed rest. We'll leave the light on for you.
That's great news Andy!! Congratulations to the doctors and nurses for a job well done and again best wishes to you and Mia and your family!
Wow, that is wonderful news Andy! Here to a speedy recovery for MIA!
Brian
Thanks again, everybody. I'm just overwhelmed by all the support that we have been given throughout this ordeal. In times like this, you really see the best in people. I had a very special moment a week or so ago when Matt and Nancy Jaycox were in town visiting Mia here at the hospital. Ray, Matt and Nancy were helping Mia navigate her wheelchair into the elevator after a long and tiring day. I just stepped back and watched how each one of them cared so deeply for her; the concern in their eyes and the way they were so involved in her recovery - I am not really eloquent enough with the written word to convey the feeling of the moment, but suffice to say that it was one of those special moments that I will always carry with me, a moment when I really felt the love and caring nature of true friendship. I guess it is when your friends care so deeply for someone so important to you - it just really moves me to have this kind of support for her, and for us.
BTW, she is still doing well. She is still very swollen, and running a low grade fever but it is all very normal. She's on a lot of pain meds and such, so she's very groggy and out of it - again a good thing for the moment. We just got her out of the bed and sitting up in a chair for a little while, and she's enjoying a little Blues Clues as I update you all. More to come as things progress...
Boy, is that a relief to hear. Andy, thanks for taking the time to bring us up to speed on your daughters condition. You and your wife must be wiped and in need for some much needed rest. When it comes right down to it, family and friends will pull you through and I'm betting that right about now you're understanding just how crucial our wonderful nurses are who work in our hospitals. Without them I don't know where I'd be when I was extremely injured. Their no doubt angels in white uniforms. Go Mia!
Just opened this up, I had no idea it was about Mia. Glad to hear she's still on the mend and doing well. My best to you all, Andy.
Wonderful news. I'm sure all of us sending our prayers and positive energy will continue to help Mia. All the best to you and the family, Andy.
I am very happy to hear that the surgery was a success and Mia is recovering safely. Tell her Uncle Robby will see her soon!
Yeah, I sort of missed this one, too. I have a tendency to be pretty selective about the posts I read, lest I spend 100% of my time at my computer instead of my normal 90%. ;) Anyway, I'm glad to hear everything went well and I wish her the best during her recovery.
Special Delivery for Mia from Clara, who wanted to draw her a picture to cheer her up and it's a picture of Mia herself in the halo! I tried tp get her to add some text but she said no just the pink wheelchair. You can tell Mia there's a little girl in Minnesota who broke her arm recently and remembers how icky surgery was. Hang in there you guys!

Wow...that is TERRIFIC NEWS!! I've been thinking about Mia all day while working and half the night while my son hogged the computer up until recently. HOW AWESOME that you see immediate physical results with this type of operation! I'm sure this will only make her recover even faster after seeing the change for herself... Stay strong dad!
Mike G.
Thank you for keeping us posted. Makes me very happy to hear she is healing up well.
Hello again Andy and Mia, I'm so pleased that everything well so well, see what I mean by the inner glow for even a child like Clara noticed her smile. All the very best from Maurice in Northern Ireland.
Best wishes for Mia and her family. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and a long happy, & healthy life.
Been wondering about Mia and her progress. Any updates would be greatly appreciated. Still praying intently for the Williams family. Much love their way.
I JUST SAW THIS POST. ONE THING I AM SURE OF IS GOD LOVES THIS BEUTIFULL LITTLE GIRL. GOD HAS ALWAYS HEARD MY PRAYERS, AND AS I WRITE THIS I AM PRAYING FOR HER. I AM SURE SHE HAS BEEN DOING WELL SCINCE THE LAST POST. GOD BLESS YOU MIA KEEP SMILING YOU ARE A GIFT TO THIS WORLD AND TO YOUR PARENTS. WHEN YOU GROW UP AND BECOME A BEUTIFULL WOMEN DON'T FORGET OUR GROUP....WE ALL LOVE AND PRAY FOR YOU. I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.
Yes, Andy, give us an update.
Not trying to steal Andy's thunder right now, but he is beyond exhausted, and I am sure he would want you to know the following: My wife, Nancy, is in St. Louis right now with Andy and Mia and Amy.
Mia is going home tomorrow!
The discharge process is already under way. She has recovered in strides, as kids frequently do.
I am always amazed by how fast kids heal. Once, when I was in the Peds ICU, I had a patient who went home four days after major open heart surgery. The sort of thing that would have laid an adult up for 3 weeks.
Mia reminds me a lot of that little girl, and so I knew she was going to fly through this.
I know they appreciate all the well wishes.
I feel compelled to mention this:
Mia has been staying under the superb care of the St Louis Shriner's hospital for Children for the last 8 weeks.
For those who don't know, Shriner's provides free care to children under 18 with Orthopedic and burn injuries. When rock stars and other celebrities have benefit concerts for "Shriners", these are the hospitals they are talking about.
Take a moment to think about what a great organization they are. How noble their cause. And, if you can spare it, consider making a donation. It is tax-deductible. Little children like Mia rely on the support to these hospitals from people like us.

Thanks for listening.
And, it bears repeating: "GO MIA!"
Beast witches,
Matt Jaycox
UMA Medic
Thank you, Matt! I hope to see Mia this week. I am happy that it will be in her home instead of a hospital.
Thanks for the update Matt and again best wishs to Andy, Mia and the whole family.
Delighted to hear that Mia is soon to be home and well on the mend. Best wishes for the whole Williams family from me and Jane.
Matt, you are so right about the Shriner's Hospital in St. Louis. I've worked in a lot of hospitals, but never have I seen one with a more dedicated staff than the one at Shriner's. I used to show 16mm cartoons and shorts there, and was always impressed with the amazing people who worked there.
They have a wonderful variety of programs for the patients-- art, crafts, music, etc., and go out of their way to keep the kids as entertained and active as is possible.
Shriner's is a great place to donate time and/or $ to!
**UPDATE** Well, it was a tough week for us all, but I am happy to say that we are now home and all under the same roof! It was a long time coming, but the operation was a success and Mia is getting stronger each day. She has growth rods in her spine, and will require a lot of additional surgeries throughout her life, but she is straight and healthy. She should really begin to grow and thrive now that shes' all fixed up. I took some pics to give a play by play of the week:
TUESDAY - Surgery. The procedure took a little over 4 hours. She was transferred to ICU for the remainder of the day and was released back to her room by about 11am the next day.
WEDNESDAY - Upon returning to the hospital room; Mia was visited by a few St. Louis Cardinals baseball players. LaRue, Miles and Looper visited along with their wives and gave Mia a neat book and stuffed animals. More importantly, they helped her with her first post-op smile!
Shortly after, a Pet Therapy person came by and she really liked that:
THURSDAY - A really tough day, she had to move a lot more and it wasn't easy. Here's a shot of physical therapy:
She was pretty worn out, but had to end up going to get pictures and X-Rays. It was her first time standing and it was a real challenge.
Later, a surprise package from our very own Meek really brightened up a very difficult day. Once again, a special delivery smile:
Thanks, Meek. It was really good timing!
FRIDAY, SATURDAY and SUNDAY were more of the same, getting a little stronger each day and a little more mobile. Matt's wife Nancy came down from Chicago to spend some time with Mia and help out as Amy had to work double 12's over the weekend. Special thanks to Nancy for her help. I know it was a stressful and hard time, and we appreciate her help.
MONDAY - We got our walking papers! Yeah! Homeward bound, she told everyone goodbye and we came home. It is still hard to believe that we are home again. Over 7 weeks in the hospital, it's hard to imagine.
These are the X-Ray comparisons they showed us...left is her spine at 75% curvature - not even the worst it got - and next to it you can see the rods and how they straightened her up and evened out the rib cage:
I would like to echo some of the things said about the Shriner's Hospital. Nowhere else could you actually get this kind of care, and it is completely free. We were so blessed by this organization; I could never begin to repay what has been given to us. The people there are great, some I know will be lifelong friends; and the best doctors and surgeons in the world do their finest work for the kids who really need it. If you are looking for a charity to donate to, I can't think of a better one. It really is the place were miracles happen.
And thanks again to all of our friends out there; it is your support that helped us through mentally and sometimes even physically.
This picture says it all, don't it!
Monster toys what? A thread like this makes everything else seem like pure dribble. What a miracle Mia is. And what pretty blue eyes. Best post ever in the history of the UMA! Brought tears of joy to my eyes. Welcome back home Andy.
Good to be back General...sharing a tear with you right now, my friend.

Yeah, thats pretty much the pic I've been hoping to see. Its hard to believe how kids can cope with things like sooo much better then adults can. REALLY glad you posted the update Andy and VERY glad everything went as planned. She looks just amazing and happy and full of life. Good luck on her recovery but it seems she'll do just find.
What an Angel. You guys are so special to have had her sent to you. And we thank you for sharing and letting us - most of which you hardly know - into this special world. We lose sight of so many things that are so much bigger.
pk
Paul, please tell Clara that her picture meant a lot to Mia. She got to see it on the shared "parent's computer" at the hospital, and she really loved it. I printed it out for her and she has it in her keepsake box. It kinda made her feel famous, I think!
That little princess has been through a lot! I am very glad she is back home and doing well. What a harrowing week. I'm looking forward to seeing her walking straight and tall!
Andy,
That picture says it all.She is a sweetheart. And those blue eyes put Frank Sinatra to shame !
She will be a real heartbreaker! All the best to the little princess and her family.
God bless.
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!.... WOW SHE DOESN'T MESS ABOUT DOES SHE? FRIENDS, THAT IS ABOUT AS BAD A SCOLIOSIS AS I HAVE SEEN. And to go from that picture to the the beautiful one everyone else has already re-printed is a total miracle.
I'll say it again: GO MIA!
Love,
Uncle Raymond (yes she called me "Uncle Ray" on a number of occasions the last weekend I saw her... in full earshot of Ray. I wonder who will get called "Uncle Matt." If logic holds, it will be someone named "Robby")
Andy,
Thanks for sharing a parents worst nightmare with all of us here in the group. My God , she is SUCH an angel and those X-rays show JUST what an ordeal she has undergone. Please clue me in on what some of her favorite things might be, as i'd like to put together a little get well package for her. [if you don't mind] I have a 22 year old daughter and 14 year old son and those VERY personal pictures you were so kind to share with us hit me where i live. We all babble on about movies and toys, which is great fun but something like this truly puts everything in its proper perspective. If you'd be so kind as to post or PM a mailing address along with some of Mia's fave things at your convenience , i'd appreciate it.
Mike Gilks
Man, She looks great! She's been through so much but I am glad she is "Straightened out". I'm sorry to hear it's not the end of her operations but she's so much more of a trooper than I could ever be in the same situation that I'm sure she'll be fine.
Godspeed Mia!
Great news Andy!! Congratulations to you and Nancy and Godspeed on Mia's recovery! Boy, I never realized how serious her condition was until you posted her x-rays. Thank you for sharing them, it could not have been easy. She is a very special little lady with a beatuful smile and may she grow to be as strong and as healthy as possible. To Matt(mjaycox) and Nancy, god bless you for being there helping out, true friends are rare treasures indeed. Take care all, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Pat K. (Cappy H.)
Andy, thanks for the great news! It's a relief to all of us that she is doing so well! God Bless little Mia! Those eyes are such a beautiful blue!
Hope Mom and Dad are doing just as well!
Take care!
Brian
It's wonderful to see Mia on the road to recovery. Thanks for sharing the photos. As the General said, this is what's truly important.
Andy & Mia: You know, the Bear and the Cat(who looks a bit like Peter Lorre) told me that they had to get to St. Louis ASAP---said they had some major cheering up to do for Mia and all I did was point them in the southward direction and provide one-way travel arrangements.
Both the Bear and the Cat said they would see that my card(also signed by Ralphie Scissorpaws, Esq. retired cat about town) got delievered as well.
Mia's smile says it all.
"Meek"(your obedient servant)
Haven't been online, out of town on trainiing, but wanted to jump in and say God bless to Mia and her family! Wonderful to read through the posts to a happy conclusion!
Thanks for the Good News update!
Prayers continue,
-Craig W.
Oh boy, I just found out Mia was going in for surgery the other day when I sent Andy an email. Didnt know the story. After reading this thread I was literally crying, tears pouring onto my keyboard. I have 4 children 7,5,3 and 1 so I can imagine, and at the same time cant imagine what something like this would put you through as a family.
I am so darn proud of her, Andy, his wife and this community for all the wonderful things that were said and done during such an important and difficult time.
This is just the most beautiful story with the happiest ending I have ever read in all my years of having internet access and its been since the beginning.
Andy, I am so happy for you, the wife and Mia. She is on her road to recovery and I KNOW for a fact she'll grow up just perfectly. You've been blessed!
Lots of love to your family..
Your friend,
GeorgeL
Thanks; we definitely have been blessed. Sometimes our blessings are disguised by the trials we must go through to realize them; but I can really see it now.
Andy,
Thanks for sending me your address...Mia's get well package will go out in tomorrow's mail. I'm in the same boat as George. My son came into the room to ask me how to play Hard Day's Night on guitar as i was reading the first post you made about her surgery. He saw the tears running down my face and must have thought i'd lost my mind! Continuing to send positive energy her way. Hope to see more pics of that magnificent smile in the near future!
Best to all,
Mike G.
Hey everybody, wanted to let you all know that this past week has been a real productive one for Mia; she is doing great and continues to get stronger and more mobile.
So we got home this evening, and there was a big package here addressed to Mia from our own "Gasport" Mike Gilks and family. Of course, nothing excites a kid more than mail that is addressed to them, so we had to be quick about getting the box torn open. What was inside was amazing! A wonderful get well card that really moved Amy and I, and lots of great toys. Mike, you must be a mindreader; because you packed up a whole box of her favorite things!
Some really great Littlest Pet Shop critters that she didn't have! She loves these things.
Kung Fu Panda blanket...I think she kissed this thing about 50 times!
This is weird...awhile back, she asked us to buy her this stuffed turtle for her birthday, and after seeing it once we never found it again...until it showed up tonight! How in the heck did you do that, Mike???
So she is one happy little girl, not to mention lucky to have friends out there like you all. Mike, you really did an amazingly generous and kind thing for her, thanks so much from the whole family to yours. :)
She's looking good. You can't even tell at first glance that she was operated on recently.
Andy, being from Belfast I have witnessed a fair amount of tragedy during the troubles, but it is stories like yours and little Mia than renew my faith. I know that this is a story that I will remember always and if ever I have reason God forbid to need strength then you and your little one will be in my thoughts. She has amazed me by her fortitude and what a great smile. You can tell her that her honorary uncle Maurice from Northern Ireland says Hi and God bless. you can also tell her that I have it on good authority that the fairy's and the little people also know about the little Princess from America and keep her in their prayers.
Maurice
WOW...Those photos are KILLING ME! How WONDERFUL to see her up and obviously feeling well! Thank you SO MUCH Andy, for sending me this treat tonight. The first time i read your initial post about Mia and the surgery and looked into those big blue eyes staring back into mine, all i can say is it spoke to me. The same way a look from my own kid's eyes spoke to me whenever they were hurting. I rush out ,in a frenzy trying to think of some way to make them happy. I spent the entire day shopping for Mia and had a TERRIFIC time doing so. I can't tell you how many times i would choose something, walk around a while and then change my mind and pick out something else. I couldn't tell you how many stores i visited. I actually went back a day later and exchanged a previous item for that Kung Fu Panda thing because i thought she'd like it more. You made me feel WAY better than any of those toys could have possibly made Mia feel by letting me know she liked them so much. That Turtle story is TOO WEIRD! It's the ONLY thing i immediately picked out that i NEVER put back. Just one of those Twilight Zone moments, i guess. Where's Rod Serling when you need him? Thanks again for posting those beautiful pics and i am SO THRILLED she's doing so well. Thank her for sharing that smile with me again!
Mike
She's a beautiful little girl.May the Lord bless her and you.
Three Cheers and a Tiger! Mia's on the mend---what a difference a week makes, eh?
Andy & family, your thank you card arrived last week while I was having prolonged work hours---no needs for thanks---I'm an invenerate gift giver and need only the smallest excuse to be in the "giving vein".
"Meek"
That's great, Andy. Mia looks happy and healthy. I know there's still a long road ahead, but looks like the worst of it is behind her.
Andy,
Im a newbie but a father of two. I can imagine the stress from all that has been going on with Mia's disease. Great to see she is doing well!! My prayers are with you and your family, may God bless your family my monster friend.
Daniel
That looks to be one happy, recovering kid!
Glad to see things are going well for her, Andy. :)
Thanks for the pics Andy. It's so encouraging to view God's handiwork. It's also every bit as encouraging to see the compassion and kindness of this group's members. It makes a General teary-eyed and very blessed to be part of such an army. A thousand salutes clear across this thread! We are a special group here indeed! Much love to Mia!
Thanks again and again to everyone in the group. You were a source of strength for us when we really needed it. We are indeed a special group of people here at the UMA. ;D
