Title: Message from Uncle Robby
Post by: raycastile on August 04, 2008, 06:18:58 PM
Andy might kick my butt for bringing this up in a public forum, since he's been pretty private about it until now.  But oh well, tough.  I'm in Sao Paulo where his boot can't reach me.

His daughter, Mia, is having a very serious operation Tuesday (unless the schedule has changed).  How serious?  VERY serious.  Andy can elaborate if he wants.

This is a sweet little girl who calls me "Uncle Robby," even though she knows my name is Raymond.  I am definitely looking forward to seeing her when I return!

If you are the praying type, say a prayer for Mia.  If, like me, you are not the praying type, then just send her some good thoughts and give Andy your moral support.

Thank you!

No problem Ray.  My wife and I were not blessed with children of our own, but we have many nieces and nephews who are near and dear to us.  Best of wishes to Mia on a speedy recovery.

It's always a tough time when illness strikes and for it to be ones child then it is unbearable. I will most certainly give my support to Andy and his family and especially to his little one, Mia.

Wow, I wasn't expecting this thread!  I don't mind, though; many of you are my closest friends and the UMA really is a family of sorts for me.

My four year old daughter Mia has had scoliosis - curvature of the spine - since birth.  Recently, the curvature got to the point that it became life threatening, and she was not thriving or growing because of the compression of her internal organs and the stress on her respiratory system.  So, her doctors felt as if surgery was an absolute necessity.  She's been in "halo-traction" at the hosipital for 6 weeks now, and she will be having her big surgery tomorrow where they will put growth rods on her spine to straighten the curve and balance out her chest cavity.  It is a very major surgery, and especially at her age and size, there are substanital risks involved.  The good news is that Mia is a fighter.  She's feisty, smart and never gives up.  So, that combined with all the prayers and well-wishes and support from our friends gives me lots of hope.  Here's a shot of her in the courtyard at Shriner's Hospital where we are now:
So keep her in your thoughts, and thanks again to you all.  We have the best friends that anyone could ever hope for, and Shriner's is providing the best medical care available.  I'll keep everyone posted as things progress.

Her halo-traction looks like a crown on the princess that I'm sure she is to all that know her.  Years ago, I had interaction with a lot of children that ha some tough health problems.  What I always found so amazing was that no matter how severe the problems kids face, they still find a way to play and be kids.  The Dora stickers on her halo show me that Mia (beautiful name by the way) is no different.  She's a treasure.

This is something that has been on my mind for a few weeks now, I'm glad that Ray created a thread about it.  I've been kind of anticipating 08/05 anxiously for the last week and a half or so.  I guess I'm more anticipating 08/06 when I hope that Andy can report everything went as planned with the surgery.  Its a hard thing to have a child in the hospital at all, more so when its serious.

Thank you Andy for posting little Mia's photo, I was moved by her smile and the courage it showed. It's strange that the media paints a profile of courage by showing how tough the person is, but I have found in my life that  the real brave ones wear a smile with pride and in turn have an inner glow that provides comfort to those around them. Andy feel proud that your daughter is one of that fold and God bless little Mia in her time of need.

Hi all,
I am happy to report that the operation was a success, and Mia is in the ICU as I type this.  The surgery took about 4 hours, and the results are amazing.  She is almost perfectly straight and her chest cavity is right in place.  No complications thus far, and things are looking good.  The next few days will probably be a real challenge; recovery from this type of surgery can be, but she really is a tough little bugger.
I want to thank you all again for your outpouring of support.  I believe that these things make a big difference, and I attribute today's success to a lot of things; you all included.  Your posts have touched Amy and I in a very emotional way, and we thank you.
So now we are off to grab some rest...talk to you soon.

Thanks again, everybody.  I'm just overwhelmed by all the support that we have been given throughout this ordeal.  In times like this, you really see the best in people.  I had a very special moment a week or so ago when Matt and Nancy Jaycox were in town visiting Mia here at the hospital.  Ray, Matt and Nancy were helping Mia navigate her wheelchair into the elevator after a long and tiring day.  I just stepped back and watched how each one of them cared so deeply for her; the concern in their eyes and the way they were so involved in her recovery - I am not really eloquent enough with the written word to convey the feeling of the moment, but suffice to say that it was one of those special moments that I will always carry with me, a moment when I really felt the love and caring nature of true friendship.  I guess it is when your friends care so deeply for someone so important to you - it just really moves me to have this kind of support for her, and for us.
BTW, she is still doing well.  She is still very swollen, and running a low grade fever but it is all very normal.  She's on a lot of pain meds and such, so she's very groggy and out of it - again a good thing for the moment.  We just got her out of the bed and sitting up in a chair for a little while, and she's enjoying a little Blues Clues as I update you all.  More to come as things progress...

Boy, is that a relief to hear. Andy, thanks for taking the time to bring us up to speed on your daughters condition. You and your wife must be wiped and in need for some much needed rest. When it comes right down to it, family and friends will pull you through and I'm betting that right about now you're understanding just how crucial our wonderful nurses are who work in our hospitals. Without them I don't know where I'd be when I was extremely injured. Their no doubt angels in white uniforms. Go Mia!

Special Delivery for Mia from Clara, who wanted to draw her a picture to cheer her up and  it's a picture of Mia herself in the halo! I tried tp get her to add some text but she said no just the pink wheelchair. You can tell Mia there's a little girl in Minnesota who broke her arm recently and remembers how icky surgery was.  Hang in there you guys!

Not trying to steal Andy's thunder right now, but he is beyond exhausted, and I am sure he would want you to know the following: My wife, Nancy, is in St. Louis right now with Andy and Mia and Amy.

Mia is going home tomorrow!

The discharge process is already under way. She has recovered in strides, as kids frequently do.

I am always amazed by how fast kids heal. Once, when I was in the Peds ICU, I had a patient who went home four days after major open heart surgery. The sort of thing that would have laid an adult up for 3 weeks.

Mia reminds me a lot of that little girl, and so I knew she was going to fly through this.

I know they appreciate all the well wishes.

I feel compelled to mention this:

Mia has been staying under the superb care of the St Louis Shriner's hospital for Children for the last 8 weeks.

For those who don't know, Shriner's provides free care to children under 18 with Orthopedic and burn injuries. When rock stars and other celebrities have benefit concerts for "Shriners", these are the hospitals they are talking about.

Take a moment to think about what a great organization they are. How noble their cause. And, if you can spare it, consider making a donation. It is tax-deductible. Little children like Mia rely on the support to these hospitals from people like us.

http://www.shrinershq.org/Hospitals/Main/

Thanks for listening.

And, it bears repeating: "GO MIA!"

Beast witches,

Matt Jaycox
UMA Medic

Delighted to hear that Mia is soon to be home and well on the mend. Best wishes for the whole Williams family from me and Jane.

Matt, you are so right about the Shriner's Hospital in St. Louis. I've worked in a lot of hospitals, but never have I seen one with a more dedicated staff than the one at Shriner's. I used to show 16mm cartoons and shorts there, and was always impressed with the amazing people who worked there.

They have a wonderful variety of programs for the patients-- art, crafts, music, etc., and go out of their way to keep the kids as entertained and active as is possible.

Shriner's is a great place to donate time and/or $ to!

**UPDATE** Well, it was a tough week for us all, but I am happy to say that we are now home and all under the same roof!  It was a long time coming, but the operation was a success and Mia is getting stronger each day.  She has growth rods in her spine, and will require a lot of additional surgeries throughout her life, but she is straight and healthy.  She should really begin to grow and thrive now that shes' all fixed up.  I took some pics to give a play by play of the week:
TUESDAY - Surgery.  The procedure took a little over 4 hours.  She was transferred to ICU for the remainder of the day and was released back to her room by about 11am the next day.
WEDNESDAY - Upon returning to the hospital room; Mia was visited by a few St. Louis Cardinals baseball players.  LaRue, Miles and Looper visited along with their wives and gave Mia a neat book and stuffed animals.  More importantly, they helped her with her first post-op smile!
Shortly after, a Pet Therapy person came by and she really liked that:
THURSDAY - A really tough day, she had to move a lot more and it wasn't easy.  Here's a shot of physical therapy:
She was pretty worn out, but had to end up going to get pictures and X-Rays.  It was her first time standing and it was a real challenge.
Later, a surprise package from our very own Meek really brightened up a very difficult day.  Once again, a special delivery smile:
Thanks, Meek.  It was really good timing!
FRIDAY, SATURDAY and SUNDAY were more of the same, getting a little stronger each day and a little more mobile.  Matt's wife Nancy came down from Chicago to spend some time with Mia and help out as Amy had to work double 12's over the weekend.  Special thanks to Nancy for her help.  I know it was a stressful and hard time, and we appreciate her help.
MONDAY - We got our walking papers!  Yeah!  Homeward bound, she told everyone goodbye and we came home.  It is still hard to believe that we are home again.  Over 7 weeks in the hospital, it's hard to imagine.
These are the X-Ray comparisons they showed us...left is her spine at 75% curvature - not even the worst it got - and next to it you can see the rods and how they straightened her up and evened out the rib cage:
I would like to echo some of the things said about the Shriner's Hospital.  Nowhere else could you actually get this kind of care, and it is completely free.  We were so blessed by this organization; I could never begin to repay what has been given to us.  The people there are great, some I know will be lifelong friends; and the best doctors and surgeons in the world do their finest work for the kids who really need it.  If you are looking for a charity to donate to, I can't think of a better one.  It really is the place were miracles happen.
And thanks again to all of our friends out there; it is your support that helped us through mentally and sometimes even physically.

What an Angel. You guys are so special to have had her sent to you. And we thank you for sharing and letting us - most of which you hardly know - into this special world. We lose sight of so many things that are so much bigger.

Paul, please tell Clara that her picture meant a lot to Mia.  She got to see it on the shared "parent's computer" at the hospital, and she really loved it.  I printed it out for her and she has it in her keepsake box.  It kinda made her feel famous, I think!

That little princess has been through a lot!  I am very glad she is back home and doing well.  What a harrowing week.  I'm looking forward to seeing her walking straight and tall!

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!.... WOW SHE DOESN'T MESS ABOUT DOES SHE? FRIENDS, THAT IS ABOUT AS BAD A SCOLIOSIS AS I HAVE SEEN. And to go from that picture to the the beautiful one everyone else has already re-printed is a total miracle.

I'll say it again: GO MIA!

Love,

Uncle Raymond (yes she called me "Uncle Ray" on a number of occasions the last weekend I saw her... in full earshot of Ray. I wonder who will get called "Uncle Matt." If logic holds, it will be someone named "Robby")

Andy,
Thanks for sharing a parents worst nightmare with all of us here in the group. My God , she is SUCH an angel and those X-rays show JUST what an ordeal she has undergone. Please clue me in on what some of her favorite things might be, as i'd like to put together a little get well package for her. [if you don't mind] I have a 22 year old daughter and 14 year old son and those VERY personal pictures you were so kind to share with us hit me where i live. We all babble on about movies and toys, which is great fun but something like this truly puts everything in its proper perspective. If you'd be so kind as to post or PM a mailing address along with some of Mia's fave things at your convenience , i'd appreciate it.

Man, She looks great! She's been through so much but I am glad she is "Straightened out". I'm sorry to hear it's not the end of her operations but she's so much more of a trooper than I could ever be in the same situation that I'm sure she'll be fine.

Godspeed Mia!

Great news Andy!! Congratulations to you and Nancy and Godspeed on Mia's recovery!  Boy, I never realized how serious her condition was until you posted her x-rays.  Thank you for sharing them, it could not have been easy. She is a very special little lady with a beatuful smile and may she grow to be as strong and as healthy as possible.  To Matt(mjaycox) and Nancy, god bless you for being there helping out, true friends are rare treasures indeed.  Take care all, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

It's wonderful to see Mia on the road to recovery. Thanks for sharing the photos. As the General said, this is what's truly important.

Andy & Mia: You know, the Bear and the Cat(who looks a bit like Peter Lorre) told me that they had to get to St. Louis ASAP---said they had some major cheering up to do for Mia and all I did was point them in the southward direction and provide one-way travel arrangements.
Both the Bear and the Cat said they would see that my card(also signed by Ralphie Scissorpaws, Esq. retired cat about town) got delievered as well.

    Mia's smile says it all.

Oh boy, I just found out Mia was going in for surgery the other day when I sent Andy an email. Didnt know the story. After reading this thread I was literally crying, tears pouring onto my keyboard. I have 4 children 7,5,3 and 1 so I can imagine, and at the same time cant imagine what something like this would put you through as a family.

I am so darn proud of her, Andy, his wife and this community for all the wonderful things that were said and done during such an important and difficult time.

This is just the most beautiful story with the happiest ending I have ever read in all my years of having internet access and its been since the beginning.

Andy, I am so happy for you, the wife and Mia. She is on her road to recovery and I KNOW for a fact she'll grow up just perfectly. You've been blessed!

Lots of love to your family..
Your friend,
GeorgeL

Thanks; we definitely have been blessed.  Sometimes our blessings are disguised by the trials we must go through to realize them; but I can really see it now.

Andy,
Thanks for sending me your address...Mia's get well package will go out in tomorrow's mail. I'm in the same boat as George. My son came into the room to ask me how to play Hard Day's Night on guitar as i was reading the first post you made about her surgery. He saw the tears running down my face and must have thought i'd lost my mind! Continuing to send positive energy her way. Hope to see more pics of that magnificent smile in the near future!
                                        Best to all,

Hey everybody, wanted to let you all know that this past week has been a real productive one for Mia; she is doing great and continues to get stronger and more mobile.

So we got home this evening, and there was a big package here addressed to Mia from our own "Gasport" Mike Gilks and family.  Of course, nothing excites a kid more than mail that is addressed to them, so we had to be quick about getting the box torn open.  What was inside was amazing!  A wonderful get well card that really moved Amy and I, and lots of great toys.  Mike, you must be a mindreader; because you packed up a whole box of her favorite things!
Some really great Littlest Pet Shop critters that she didn't have!  She loves these things.
Kung Fu Panda blanket...I think she kissed this thing about 50 times!
This is weird...awhile back, she asked us to buy her this stuffed turtle for her birthday, and after seeing it once we never found it again...until it showed up tonight!  How in the heck did you do that, Mike???
So she is one happy little girl, not to mention lucky to have friends out there like you all.  Mike, you really did an amazingly generous and kind thing for her, thanks so much from the whole family to yours. :)

Andy, being from Belfast I have witnessed a fair amount of tragedy during the troubles, but it is stories like yours and little Mia than renew my faith. I know that this is a story that I will remember always and if ever I have reason God forbid to need strength then you and your little one will be in my thoughts. She has amazed me by her fortitude and what a great smile. You can tell her that her honorary uncle Maurice from Northern Ireland says Hi and God bless. you can also tell her that I have it on good authority that the fairy's and the little people also know about the little Princess from America and keep her in their prayers.

WOW...Those photos are KILLING ME! How WONDERFUL to see her up and obviously feeling well!  Thank you SO MUCH Andy, for sending me this treat tonight.  The first time i read your initial post about Mia and the surgery and looked into those big blue eyes staring back into mine, all i can say is it spoke to me. The same way a look from my own kid's eyes spoke to me whenever they were hurting. I rush out ,in a frenzy trying to think of some way to make them happy. I spent the entire day shopping for Mia and had a TERRIFIC time doing so. I can't tell you how many times i would choose something, walk around a while and then change my mind and pick out something else. I couldn't tell you how many stores i visited. I actually went back a day later and exchanged a previous item for that Kung Fu Panda thing because i thought she'd like it more. You made me feel WAY better than any of those toys could have possibly made Mia feel by letting me know she liked them so much. That Turtle story is TOO WEIRD! It's the ONLY thing i immediately picked out that i NEVER put back. Just one of those Twilight Zone moments, i guess. Where's Rod Serling when you need him? Thanks again for posting those beautiful pics and i am SO THRILLED she's doing so well. Thank her for sharing that smile with me again!

Thanks for the pics Andy. It's so encouraging to view God's handiwork. It's also every bit as encouraging to see the compassion and kindness of this group's members. It makes a General teary-eyed and very blessed to be part of such an army. A thousand salutes clear across this thread! We are a special group here indeed! Much love to Mia!
