I love King Crimson. LOVE THEM. A huge inspiration on so many levels of musicality. Songwriting...musicianship...presentation. They are just so cool.

Hawkwind is the only one from that list that I've heard of.

Some of my favorite prog bands are Crimson, Tull, Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, and Gentle Giant. I get so sick of people generalizing prog as "elitist" music. These were simply talented musicians who wrote rather complicated music, versus the simple pop tunes that are radio fodder. If these musicians had lived in the 1700's they would have written what we call classical music. I personally like prog because of the imagery it evokes. Peter Sinfield especially wrote lyrics full of mind images.

Pretty much only firmiliar with Fripp though Eno

I'll always remember picking up 'No Pussyfooting' in '73 (think I was 16)
& having a wtf  ??? moment...two years later with 'Evening Star' & Eno's
'Another Green World' & I couldn't get enough!

Love the 801 as well as the way too short lived Quiet Sun

That'd be Phil Manzanera's work. He was the guitarist for Roxy Music too.

I remember these musicians would switch from band to band. King Crimson is a good example. There used to be a book with band pedigrees. I wonder if that's online.

Hawkwind is the only one from that list that I've heard of.

Robert Calvert was the resident poet for Hawkwind.  When he left the band the first time, he was replaced by Michael Moorcock who had his own band called Deep Fix.  After Bob came back and left a second time, he was replaced for one album by Roger Neville-Neil who was/is an old high school buddy of mine.  Bob was thinking about returning again after the Xenon Codex album but tragically he died of a heart attack in 1988.  If there are any fans out there, Hawkwind is featured on the next Classic Rock Presents Prog due out in the states.  (It's already out in Britain.)  The cover is a send up of the old album In Search of Space.

Big, big prog fan here.  Too many names to mention.  Some of the newer ones I have gotten into are Big, Big Train and Mostly Autumn.  BTW, Yes have a new album (it might already be out).

Was introduced to fripp when he, daryl hall and peter gabriel released a set of solo albums, all marketed as a "trilogy". Fripps album was called exposure and halls was sacred songs. Lots of "frippertronics" on both albums.
Each artist collaborated with the others on their albums.Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk

Anybody remember FLASH? They sounded just like early YES and featured Peter Banks and Tony Kaye (both early YES members). They had 3 LPs in the early/mid '70s.

At one time I had all three, but sold the Gabriel. Frippertronics is my favorite era of Fripp. Wish he would have done more in this manner. I have all his official releases with frippertronics on them and play them often.

Oh, yeah.  Actually underrated or underheard (probably both)  Yes had quite a few spin offs.  I've always considered Asia to be in the family as well as Anderson, Wake, Howe which later merged with 80s Yes in the 90s.

The only reason "Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe" (4 of 5 "classic" Yes members) weren't called "Yes" was because Chris Squire had the rights to the name and was going to tour as "Yes", but it didn't happen.

Some of the history of this band is unfortunate with missed opportunites.  Now that Anderson is out of the band, he has a new solo album out now as well.

KING CRIMSON RULES !!!!

Zardoz, ever see them? I only got to see them twice, once as ProjeKct Two and once as Crimson. Incredible shows, both of them! Fripp had this huge rack of electronics, and about a dozen foot pedals circling his bar stool. He would hit the string, and you could count to three before the sound made it out through the speakers! I stood about eight feet away from him, and the sound from that amazing guitar literally frightened me. It was so loud and ominous. Very emotional music.

No I never Had the Chance to see them I went to alot of good concerts back in the day but never King Crimson. But Still have 6 or 7 vinyl and about 8 CD's of their music one of my first progressive bands I ever bought and been hooked ever since . They are not for everybody but to the ones that really get it .   This band really helped shap future progressive's and Metal. They were key in all this, Amazing!!!      Fripp has been doing work with one of my favorite bands Porcupine Tree you might want to give them a listen I did and now I have over 50 CD's of their music and saw them twice already fantastic band that also loved king crimson..

Been getting into Porcupine Tree.  Picked up In Absentia and I find myself being pulled by it every now and then.  Wilson recently went over some of the back catalogue for King Crimson and worked on the masters.

Out of the all the Porcupine Tree albums I would recommend:

The Sky Moves Sideways
Up the Downstair
Staircase infinities
Signify
Lightbulb Sun
Deadwing

I'm one of their biggest fans and these are some of my favorites in more of a Progressive , Floydish, Vein!!

You know, I've got over a hundred and twenty Jethro Tull boots. I tried going through them to downsize, and found I just couldn't part with them for various reasons. Case in point: the 1972 Essen, Germany Tull show. The sound quality is a B at best, and I was about to chuck it when it came to their song "A New Day Yesterday". Martin Barre just *wails* on this tune. That is followed up by his guitar solo, which clocks in at over nine minutes. It is one of the most amazing solos I've ever heard him play. And if that bootlegger wasn't there to record it it would have been lost to history. I don't believe in selling boots, but am all for trading them. So many great moments that happen sometimes by chance have been preserved by these guys.

Ian Anderson was asked why he didn't film more of Tull's shows. He admitted that the band isn't always at their best, and chances are that's the night when you've hired the film crew, made the arrangements. etc. So maybe that's why they doctor up so many "live" official releases. I really don't care for Tull's official live album Bursting Out. When you compare it to some of the bootlegs there's no comparison.

Some of the reasons I didn't care for it, was they took the tapes back into the studio and cleaned them up and added parts to it, thus it's not really a live album per se. Part of the charm of a Tull show is Ian Anderson's stage banter, and he gets censored on this. There's no Martin Barre guitar solo, which was one of the highlights of any Tull show. It just doesn't "feel" live to me, as it's too polished. There's so many boots which are better representations of their live shows.

That's the way some of Crimson's music was created: they would do an improvisation on stage, record it, and then it would be released on one of their albums as a studio track, even though it is actually a live performance. They would learn how to perform it and it would become part of heir set list. Usually bands do it the other way around. *That's* talent!!

Had a chance to see Ozric.  Had my tickets and everything.  They played in Denver and were to come our way but a snow storm hit and they bypassed us to go to SF instead.  Last time I had a chance, I had to work.  One of these days... one of these days....  (It took me 20 years for the heavens to align and I actually got a chance to see Lemmy.)
