Question:
Pick the one or two toys that you like the best from this list:
Option 1: Big Loo
Option 2: Great Garloo
Option 3: King Zor
Option 4: Mr. Machine
Option 5: Odd Ogg
Which of these toys do you like the best? If you can't decide, you can pick two:
Big Loo
Great Garloo
King Zor
Mr. Machine
Odd Ogg
:-\
I'd have to choose The Great Garloo as number one. I never had one but one of my friends did-we were able to create some righteous havoc with that thing! ;D
I like King Zor, but Garloo edges him out. I can't believe I still don't have a Garloo! What's up with that?
never heard of 'em. :o

For me it's Big Loo. Has built-in Scanner Scope for long-range peeking.....his eyes light up....he actually talks (by crank)......has a pick-up claw hand....double dart launcher with 2 rubber tipped darts that shoot hard!.....shooting gun hand (fires 4 Zor size balls)......Shooting water ray in his belly.....sonic morris code signal......magnetic compass in his base.....fires 4 inch serious looking rocket from elevating launching pad in his left foot......has detachable warning whistle in his head..... bends at the waist (just like Garloo)......throws a big green moon grenade.......rolls on wheels.......has a great goofy grin.......and stands as tall as a 5 year old kid! In the big-plastic world Loo is the King......#1. If you don't think so it's probably cause you haven't gotten your hands on him. High point of any toy collection. Loo and I often laugh and dance in the toy dungeon....late at night......in the dark....in my sappy bunny slippers.....cheek-to-cheek...........Love, Buddy

Fully understandable given how much Big Loo has going for him.

The Great Garloo has nosed out in front in early balloting, perhaps on the strength of his campaign ads:

Man those are sweet
I chose Great Garloo and King Zor. But Garloo is my favorite of the toys listed with Zor a close second.
Here's an action sequence from 1962 involving Odd Ogg:

Not sure if it is common knowledge, but Mr. Machine comes with a toy wrench to take him apart. Alot of fun to take apart, not so easy for little hands and minds to re-assemble. Buddy
This has become a two toy battle for the gold, and a three toy battle for the bronze. This is one in which your votes really count!

I love that B&W Garloo commercial. The low angle on him as he attacks the tracks almost makes it look like something from Toho.
By my somewhat warped calculation Big Loo is pulling ahead! Buddy
True, true. Big Loo is no longer in dead last.
;)
Great Garloo all the way! >:D
I've never owned a Big Loo, but do have a Garloo & Zor.....My vote would have to go with the one i was given a Christmas time all those years ago and left the biggest impression on this monster kid...Great Garloo!

If a new poll was started about the least interesting of the five, my vote would go for Odd Ogg. King Zor, Big Loo, and the Great Garloo had major destructive powers, and had adjectives in their names defining them as awesome. Mr. Machine could teach children something about machines (and for the ones who were unable to put it back together properly, prepare them for a career as an Aamco mechanic). But Odd Ogg seemed to demonstrate a prowess for running from danger while sticking his tounge out.
Hey, shouldn't Robot Commando be on the list or is it just for organic toy forms???? ;D
That is correct. Big Loo and Mr. Machine qualified as cyborgs.

I hope some of you who know more about Big Loo than I do can help me. My son has been asked to make an offer on one that the lady finally sent him photos of. He had his right knee operated on (ACL) and can't drive right now, but he wants ME to give him an idea of what to maybe offer her.
I can post the pics she sent. I am "thrifty" (OK, cheap) and would want this for myself, not to turn around and sell. This may be one of those cases where the person thinks they are sitting on a gold mine. I see someone just posted a used one on eBay which may or may not help us (about $80 shipping for that one). That one looks worse.
It is awkward that my son can't drive himself there unless he can get a roommate to do it. My wife is just coming back from visiting him to take him for a follow-up visit. Bad time to start college classes (not many...he's working towards his MBA). Any suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated and this my be my best chance to get one, though I'm not holding my breath.
If you see obvious problems, I'd appreciate knowing. I'll try to check against some reference photos.

Send the images via PM to BigBud. Not only is he a terrific guy, he's a 1960s toy idiot savant.
Scatter is my buddy, so he says nice things about me. I've got a pretty good knowledge of toys from the 50's and 60's and I do love my own Big Loo.....in fact I'm one of the only 4 votes on this thread voting for Loo as the king of the 60's mechanicals. Loo of course is huge. Mine stands 38" tall. The problem with any Loo is in his many functions......he has so many, and the parts associated with those functions are easily lost or broken off. Loo hales from 1963, and originally retailed for around $10. Found today, in the same condition as in '63, Loo could fetch a price approaching 2 grand.....boxed. So a used loose Loo is as valuable as his condition AND what parts/accessories are still with him. Let's start with what I can tell from your photos......Frontal view...I can only make out one eye bulb of the 2 ...replacement of an eye would be difficult...damage on the golden collar with much green showing through on collar and lower breastplate. Various scratches into the plastic on legs. Platform foot area looks undamaged....that's good......alot of Loos are cracked in the foot area. The lime green missile launcher in the foot/base area is broken.....3 1/2 " prong with spring are missing. the 6" white w/ black rubber tipped missile fit over that prong. The center round depression on the base held Loo's compass. I can see rust on the wire mechanism in Loo's straight right arm. That wire runs from his pincher hand to his shoulder where there is a loop....your finger pulls up on that loop to activate his pincher hand. Arm is attached with a metal screw cap, so the arm should come off and the rust could possibly be steel-wooled off (that's what I'd do). TO THE BACK.........From the top....looks like Loo's cool whistle that inserts into the top slot is missing. Below that is the battery cover for Loo's eyes. Takes 2 batteries (C type I think). May be good news there....looks like the battery cover's lime colored tuning lockdown tap is present and possibly the other lime colored item on the cover which is the on/off switch. The batteries and switch only work Loo's red blinking eyes. Next down from the cover is where Loo's talking crank was located. It is common for this handle to be broken off, and your Loo looks to be missing his. Going lower......the words "Big Loo" in what is obviously black marker are unfortunate. The gold of Loo's collar and breastplate are important to us Loo aficionados. Any attempt to remove the marker would be a mistake. Just very unfortunate it is there, but not much can be done about it. Next down are the two dart retaining mechanisms for darts shot out of Loo's chest. I can tell the one on the left is broken and will not hold a dart, while the one on the right looks complete and a dart should click into position for firing. Lower..... the Morse Code sticker is there but ragged. The Morse code itself is in rectangular hole to side of Morse code chart. A very simple device......you flick the visible wire and it clangs against a bell inside Loo. Just below Loo's Morse code chart is a hole that goes through to the other side. This held a red soft plastic syringe shaped water squeezer. You could squirt someone in front of Loo while pushing in on the water squeezer from the back. Water squeezer obviously missing. The tray area in Loo's feet held 4 red balls which were loaded into his left shoulder and fired out his hand by flicking a metal flipper under Loo's elbow. Also, I can't be sure from the photos, but there should be 4 lime colored wheels under each corner of Loo's base.
Alot to digest Curseof. Missing.......whistle, 2 original darts, 6" missile, 4 red balls, Green Moon Grenade (yea, I didn't mention that earlier)....5" long, compass in base and red syringe water squirter in his belly.
Broken........Crank for Loo's talk box, one of two dart firing mechanisms and the foot platform missile launcher and spring. Plus I'm betting I see the tabs for foot wheels missing on one corner.
Take this for what it is worth, I don't like calling myself an expert at anything. But I have seen several Loo's, and I did put on a very educated search before buying mine many years ago. Were I being offered this Loo for purchase I would go as high as $200.......maybe if I were really head-over-heals crazy about Loo in person- $250. The positive is that Loo is a rather difficult item to find available and he is a very impressive figure with-or-without all his many items. The negative is that this Loo has obviously seen heavy playtime and is missing mucho parts and accessories. Good luck.......let us know what happens! Buddy
By the time my son had replied to her he had already told her $250. I had advised exactly what you said price-wise w/o seeing this updated thread--start at $200 and maybe work up to $250. My son is not as cheap as I am and it was going to be hard for him to maneuver with his knee having been operated on. She said yes and he picked it up today. I does have all four wheels underneath, but he didn't ask her if she tested it with batteries (she said she was) or look in the battery compartment.
He's also not as obsessive as I am. Glad you mentioned about the marker, as I would be tempted to try and carefully remove it. I just sold some art, so considering I was only ever going to get one if I lucked out or if someone traded me one this was almost like trading. I told my son once he got there he could look it over more and then maybe act like he only wanted to pay $200 (I tried). Especially if something was obviously funky that we could not see via the photos.
I'm sure it was hard to pick it up and look being on crutches, etc. That REALLY cramped his style and made things more awkward. So he has him now. It makes me kind of nervous till I see it, but I had sent him reference photos and listed things wrong/missing I saw.
I'm glad he is NOT as "thrifty" as I am, but he could stand to be a little more that way. All I know is I trust his judgement and we felt like we had to move pretty quick. I don't want to harp on "Why didn't you?" since I know how that usually goes.
And I was too far away (he was about 30 minutes from the lady). I had emailed her also before she sent him the photos, but she did not respond back to me (I told her he was my son and that I'd like to see photos, too).
Uh, and something of mine just now sold on eBay for more than I expected, so I really feel like that $50 difference probably evened out. BIG LOO!!!
Thank you for your information and advice! It's not like we lucked out at a garage sale, but it has been exciting! I'm proud of my son for finding it, etc.!
A "well done" to son of Curseof! I know what you mean about having to move on it. Time lost is time for another buyer to come sneaking around. Loo will be a great topic of discussion when visitors see him. And, you can have a wonderful life-long search for the missing accessories. Buddy
Now I need a King Zor...
I had left behind a Robot Commando years ago at a resale shop and that was before I had a home computer. My son was upset that I wouldn't pay $50 or $40(?) (which ever he was wanting--maybe it was $40--I think so). He would NOT budge.
The next time we went back (on a trip) it was still there. I got a lady there to ask what was the lowest he'd take...same price, so I bought it and I'm glad I did. Has problems and missing balls (ouch!) & rockets, but it cleaned up really nice. It looks like it would work, but could never get it going (nice and clean contacts, etc.).
I have gotten some battery-ops going (never have had a whole lot), but no luck. Some the people said didn't work or didn't work at the shop or sale, but I got 'em going. I was more obsessed then and did spend quite a bit of time trying on 'RC,' so unless someone has a great suggestion, I have not had the urge to try again.
My wife may bring Loo back Tuesday. I kind of want to find a box for them to put it in before putting it in the car. My son just called again--I can tell he is excited about it.
Congrats on the Loo!! I told you Bud was THE MAN when it comes to 60s toy goodness!!

I like Great Garloo and King Zor.
I never had any of these as a kid. I was born in '59 and was too young when these were popular (I remember seeing Mr. Machine but I wasn't interested). If I were born a few years earlier I would probably feel more of the "nostalgic charm" that causes us to love toys. As it is I don't have any of these toys, and judging by the prices they sell for I probably never will. When I've seen them for sale they are always missing parts and/or damaged and sellers still want hundreds of $ for them. Always have to pass. If I ever see a Garloo or Zor in great condition and complete for a really good price I would probably buy it, but I doubt that will ever happen. The others I would have to find at a very low price to be interested. And I wouldn't be interested in Mr. Machine at all except for resale. I know these toys mean a lot to some collectors and I respect that. I'm just being honest about my own feelings towards them. If I'd had any of these as a kid I'm sure I would feel differently.
I very clearly remember a Great Garloo on display at Kresge in downtown London. I pointed it out to my mother but at that price point it was an absolute no-go.
I was blissfully unaware of King Zor though. I guess the downtown five-and-dime stores where my mother used to take me in tow, Kresge, Woolworth, Metropolitan and Zellers, never had any. Nor did the Tuckey Hardware store on the corner near my house. The toy departments in the big Simpson's and Eaton's department stores probably stocked King Zors but my mother wisely kept me away from them.
Nor did I ever see any TV ads for King Zor. We didn't have cable in those days and the one local channel we received only carried kids' cartoon shows from 12:00 to 12:30 PM and 4:30 to 5:30 PM on weekdays with Kenner seeming to have a monopoly on toy ads. As a result Kenner toys sold very well in London. "It's Kenner, it's fun! Awkkk!"

King Zor Story
I recall one day I picked up a King Zor , mint working no acc , got it at a yard sale for $2 , this was a toy I never had as a kid nor was I familiar with its collectibility as I never saw one before.
One day after doing a trade for some carded Major Matt Mason figures , I still had it in the trunk of the car so when I put the figures in the car I took it out of the trunk and presented it to the dealer as a freebie , the guy nearly fainted , later on I found out why

It was in the 80s , I went there with a friend who also grew up w/ the same era toys but he never had one or saw one as well
Hmmmm. Most of these stories of yours do seem to be from the 1980's. Books on toys only really started to appear in the 1990's.
I recall a dealer from Buffalo setting up a booth with M.I.B. Aurora model kits at a downtown Toronto model show in 1981-82. The "original" six were $15 each while the scarcer more elaborate Munsters kit was $35-$50! A comic dealer in Hamilton had a Glo Creature kit for sale for something like $50 for months/years in 1983-84. I turned my nose up at it because to a "purist" like me the Glo kits were a bowdlerization of the concept. Just a cheap gimmick if you will.
:D
So who were the biggest toy dealers in the 1980's? What were the biggest toy shows?
???
Hard to remember specific dealers but peolple like the Placenties , Hake , Sadereskis , Bostoff , Kessler were the bigger dealers back then , use to see them at the Kennedy and Phili shows as well as the big car show in Pa.
I recall I saw a big loo for $65 nice shape no acc at Brimfield Flea market I think Kessler was selling it , I immediatly grabbed my friend who bought it , next to that stall was a guy with a paint bucket 1/2 filled w/ loose Remco Addams Family & Munsters dolls I think he had wanted $10 each or $75 for the whole 5 lb canister of dolls.
Like a dummy I passed on both deals as I was a box nut back then

Yes I believe it was a pivitol time in collecting history,
In the 70s these goodies were just considered used toys or collectibles at best then Star Wars hit the scene and slowly the market changed and toys were in .
Star Wars (orig film) was the last true toy line produced and after that toys became "collectibles" with infinite variation large production runs , etc,
it both stimulated and doomed the field as toys after that were then made with collectors in mind and not just kids playthings in limited runs like any other toy from the past
Then non toy people got involved in the toy marketplace leaving other more traditional forms of investment which eventually transformed the toy field and changed it from a place for inexpensive childhood memories to a big buck marketplace for investors

I hope you didn't wind up paying that much. If you did, I'll take off your hands for $225 (just so you don't feel swindled).
Like I wrote, I only had both versions of Garloo's SON. :)

... So who were the biggest toy dealers in the 1980's? What were the biggest toy shows?
???
CARL LOBEL in Vermont... NOEL BARRETT was selling even then I think... JENNY TARRANT probably still sells, though her specialty was holiday collectibles like Halloween and Christmas... BRIAN MORAN and later his ex-wife used to do long lists of toys for sale... (I bought and/or sold to most of these dealers). His brother GARY used to repair toys and I think he worked on my Marx Hootin' Hollow Haunted House... I also sold him my Lost In Space robot. GARY MORAN was one of the best toy collecting experiences I had. And of course, MARV and FRAN SILVERSTEIN (Marv is gone but Fran remains a dear friend). MARV's business was known as New Era Toys.
The so-called Kennedy Show near the airport was huge... I sold there two or three times.
There was also Macungie Toy Show which I think was the same weekend as a car show across the highway... I sold there once and slept in a tent! (All shows were with MARV or FRAN in those days.)
Let's not forget Larry and Grace Eisenstein, the mother and son dealers from Jackson Heights, NY. They set up at a lot of shows in the early days in the northeast and were equally known for their once a year character collectible list sent at the tail end of each year. I bought my set of Hasbro/SPP monster binders from them at $10 each. They must of had a least a case of each, until Bruegman came along and bought them out.

The three Universal Monster binders were by Hasbro. The Weird-Oh binders were by SPP. Did you get both, because hopefully you're not conflating the two?
And when did Bill Bruegman buy out the Eisensteins?
???

They were Hasbro. I referred to both Hasbro and SPP as there has been controversy as to which company actually produced them which I've always felt was Hasbro for reasons I've defended in posts in other threads.
I bought these binders back in '84 or early '85. Bill bought the remaining ones shortly there after.
Perhaps someone could answer a question that's been vexing me for a while. Why is Great Garloo the one who wears a loincloth when King Zor and Odd Ogg are the ones with the balls?

Maybe Garloo is attempting to hide the lack of them. >:D
Only kidding! I know Garloo is an iconic Monsterkid toy, but that loincloth is rather silly looking.
I've always felt the loincloth, sandals, & medallion attire Garloo sported was the epitome of sixties monsterkid manliness. I actually dressed like Garloo my whole first year of high school. Chicks loved it.

Did you pose over breezy grates like Marilyn and let your loincloth flap in an unbridled frenzy of thigh slapping lust? ??? >:D

Unless you were looking under the loin cloth, I'm trying to figure out how you know what is (or isn't) under there.... :o
Back in college, I found a gold keychain with a little bagpipe player on it. (I think he stood about 1 1/2" tall.) Thinking it was neat (and since it was a clearance item), I bought it and hung it from my car's rear view mirror. Every time a girl got in my car, without fail, the first thing she would do is look up the little fellow's kilt!
So Great Garloo is actually Scottish?
:o
Great Garloo!! I got one of these for Christmas and I couldn't get over how cool this guy was. At the time he seemed enormous too! Lot of good memories of that toy. I think I may still have a VHS tape somewhere that was transferred from 8mm film of me playing with it.

It's a little known secret that if you installed the batteries backwards in Great Garloo a surprise appendage would rise from under his loin cloth. That's how Son of Garloo was created. :o

I was wondering about that. I wonder who the lucky lady was.

Similar story. Also back in college days, my girlfriend gave me a small Hallmark cast plastic Easter Bunny, whose head was separate from the body. I hung it from the mirror as well. invariably the body would twist around 180 degrees, putting the bunny's little tail bump in the front. After that we started calling him "Dirty Bunny"...
Like the Energizer Bunny, he kept going and going and going....
Here's a great shot of two of this poll's protagonists from a Xmas morning circa 1963:
