Whats the story with these things.
I know they've been in production for millions of years it seems, but when did they first show up? I know they started to reappear in the 90's.
What happened to the Mummy on all the recent boxes? He's gone. anyone have an extra Mummy box I could snag??
Also whats the easiest way to tell if you have a vintage box or a 90'+ box? The only thing I can tell is a lack of detail in the Monsters picture and the boxes only say "Candy". The old ones said "Candy Cigarettes".
I remember them from the late 60's, so they date back at least that far.
The older ones have more muted colors, and say "cigarettes", but to say one box is definitely from the 60's... we'd have to have one with a known provenance and that has not come to exist so far.
Hey D.T.,
The Monster Candy was indeed first produced as "Candy Cigarettes", Shawn (Zombophoto) should be able to help us out in that dept., as well as the older ones with the Mummy on them. The Mummy disappeared from the assortment sometime in the early 80s I believe, when the background colors of the boxes was changed (the Creature went from blue to green, and the Mummy, which had been green, went to intangible). I've only got one Mummy left from the bag that was bought from me in the 80s, otherwise I'd be glad to assist.
Anyone else know anything about 'em?

Beyond the swap in colors, you can see the printing difference quite readily on many, with the color filed being a tight dot pattern on older ones in ,my experience.

The ones on top are newer, the bottom are older. Creature box up there is blue. I haven't seen a blue one before... that might just be the ticket.
You're right about the Mummy too... no Mummy in the later ones.
In the last few years, the Wolf Man has gone from brown to a blue background.

Yup, I found some this year with blue Wolfmen. The Frankies seem to fluctuate in color. I've gotten a few in different shades of orange in the same bag.
Were these things ever licensed?
Terry,
Whats the story on those Monster candy and toy boxes? What toy came in the box? Those things are great BTW.
Terry, I love those Phoenix candy boxes (the Frankenstein posted), I just wish I had some of them!
** All of the following info deals with original boxes from the 60's and not any of the newer ones from the 80's forward.***
The Monster candy was indeed produced one time as MONSTER CANDY CIGARETTES, however I've only ever seen a Frankenstein box with these 3 words on it and that's in my collection. The CIGARETTE version box differs from the regular CANDY version box in a few ways. First obviously is the inclusion of the word CIGARETTE on the front, back and one side of the box. Second, on the bottom end of the box is the following information (which is not on the regular CANDY version box or at least not any that I've seen or own): c 1963 Universal Pictures Co. Inc. Other than that the boxes are the same, ingredients, size and design wise.
Here is a scan of the 2 different boxes (the one on the left is actually a newer box as I don't own a loose older version Frankenstein).
I own an unopened bag of the 60's CANDY version boxes. It contains 70 boxes with I believe 13 or 14 Mummy boxes (it's been awhile since I counted). The original Mummy boxes don't pop up very often and when they do I believe they go for a good bit.
Here is a photo containing the bag. Sorry it's not a better picture but since my camera is dead this is as good as it's gonna get for now.

Wow Zombo~! Nice! Thanks for the pics and info!
SHawn...as always...AMAZING!

Shawn (not Shannon .. sorry about that BTW). Thanks for the monster candy tutorial. Never even knew of the cigarette version until now. No big surprise that the word 'cigarette' was eventually removed from the package. Monsters were already considered a bad enough influence by some dimwitted parents, now you mix it with cigarettes and the whole thing becomes toxic.
I have an unopened bag of these monster candies from the early 80s which happens to have some neat-looking graphics on the bag. I'll snap a pic later tonight.
Gosh Andy. Do you smoke? LOL! I can't imagine having this candy as a kid and not thinking that smoking real cigarettes would be cool someday. I'm thinking Philip Morris had to have something to do with this? The Joe Camel of the 60s - monster candy cigarettes. Ya got a light?

LOL! I did think that smoking was really cool as a kid - and I used to sneak smokes all the time. I quit a long time ago, though. Just monster candy cigs for me, now.
Terry that's a really cool bag. There are no Mummies in it correct? I have a later version bag I'll have to post here.
Terry, That brings back great memories. I had that bag at one point, and kept it for years. Seems I got my first Monster Candies in those red cellophane wrapped department store easter baskets, that got this bag with the Creature on it (and no Mummy in it) later. I want one again!

What was the toy that came inside the Phoenix monster candy boxes from the 60s?

Does anyone have a good scan of the Phoenix Creature box, front and back?
I gotta look for them but, I have some cool monster candy that featured foil wrapped monsters in cardboard coffins.
I must have passed on dozens of bags of the monster candy over the years.......(stupid, stupid, stupid)
Just had our annual neighborhood block party last week. All the neighbors bring something to the party whether it be a dessert or an extra package of brats to throw on the grill. And what do you know? Somebody, and it wasn't me either, brought a bowl of the Monster Candies! These things will never die! Never!
Here is what a recent Creature candy box looks like; including it's contents. The candy is similar to that of the old candy cigarettes.
BTW, it's still be manufactured by World Candies Inc.
I saw a post earlier today with repo box templates. Does anyone have these boxes. I would love a full set even if repo and the thrill of making my own.
BG
Hi ReadingBag. The repro templates that you saw earlier were most likely the Phoenix Candy boxes. There is however a World Candies Bride box template which was never made as a real box. It's only a fantasy box. And it resembles the monster candies pictured in this thread. The other World Candies monsters are very easy to find and therefore are not available as a repro box.
Here is where you can find the repro candy boxes - http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=1683.0
P.S. the World Candy Bride box is pictured half way down the page nestled in between the Phoenix boxes.
Don't print out any of the "Phoenix" boxes (except Frankenstein and Mr. Hyde) if they don't say "NEW AND IMPROVED" in the message with the link to the large file. I'll have the Wolf Man done tonight and still have The Mummy and Creature to do.
Thanks for the help

According to lore Palmer "flat" monsters, cavemen, and dinosaurs, etc. in the Phoenix boxes and 'monster bag' 60s candies (I know they were in these), and most likely anything that was suitable and cheap...bugs, etc.

If you haven't read the threads on the Phoenix box repros, only the Dracula and Wolfman are exact repros, because we had scans of all 6 sides. The other 3 we only had scans of the front, back and bottoms, so I'm doing a best guess on the other 3 sides, using the WM and Drac boxes as a guide. There are also a couple of fantasy Phoenix boxes (The Bride and The Mutant).
This is interesting....

It looks to be a custom project...
It's real packaging, and won an award in 1993. I'm thinking it was maybe sold in Target? I posted about a book with graphics from Charles S Anderson Design in Memorabilia I picked up and I found that through a google search on "Charles S Anderson Design" and monsters.
Wow, I totally missed that one in the stores. It might have been during the "Big Collegeville Mask Display" year at Target? But, I thought that was after 1993, so who knows. Either way, I missed it. It would have been great to come across that on a store shelf.
Thinking about it a bit more.... it may have been packaging that was designed but never produced.
Rayons is some reference to cigarettes.

Actually, it refers to the shelving. Don't know why it would say "French Shelving" on the candy box, though? "French Stock", maybe?
English term or phrase: shelving
French translation: stockage en rayons
It looks like a graphic design student's project - I once printed a set of Tradingcards with my own
Sci-Fi / Horror Illustrations as a project in Artschool.
There might be only a few of these hand produced for presentation purposes - which make them a cool collectible!

You guys are supposed to be helping me with the large Elwar monster button mystery in another thread! ;D ;D ;D No mystery here....well, maybe some. :)
The real expert on this box is a guy that goes by "Monsterwax" (look him up on Google) so he probably knows much more than I ever will.
Here is what I know.
First of all, the box contains 4 boxes of monster candy (you can see 2 of 'em in the pic that Bobby posted). Under those boxes, you get 7 monster trading cards, 1 intro card, and 1 sheet of monster stickers that you can peel and attach to anything.
The intro card states the REAL name of this monster card set:
"French Rayon Halloween Horror! Collector Cards". The cards are smaller than "Spook Stories" cards but larger than "Monster Midgees". The intro card tells you: "Be the first kid on your block to collect all 40!" The company that put this set out was: The French Paper Company, Inc. - 100 French Street - Niles, Michigan
The WHOLE IDEA to this was to PROMOTE the new recycled paper (called "French Rayon") that this company was trying to sell. I have been told that these were given away, NEVER sold, by the sales department for this paper company to any manufacturer who might buy their paper stock. Many of these showed up in Minnesota because the item was produced here~right in me own home state! :D
DESIGN: Charles S. Anderson Design/Minneapolis, MN...COPY: Lisa Premrick/ Minneapolis,MN... PRINTING: Printcraft/New Brighton, MN
BTW, this is a really cool idea/set and THIS is the kind of thing that gets me excited doing fantasy monster pieces (as opposed to just repros).
Also, it's TOUGH to get a complete set of these (I refer you back to "Monsterwax" ~probably the most knowledgable person and with the most complete collection of all-things-monster-cards that I know). HE states that, out of the 40 cards, cards 16, 35, & 39 were "pulled off the market" do to legal reasons. I have card 16, which happened to come in a box that must have "gotten away". It makes fun of Tina Turner in a round-about way and is in poor taste.
Someday, when I sell all my collection, this may be the jewell of these cards. But still in poor taste.
Hope this helps~
Now I'm getting back to the Elwar buttons. And I have another monster mystery item AFTER I'm done with the Elwar subject.
Best,
Richard

BTW, when can I be some sort of officer. I'm a specialist but still feel like a private around here. :'(
One more thing~
No dates anywhere...but the monster candy (produced by World) that come in these French Rayon sets, are all imprinted on the side with - boxes made in Yugoslavia.
I don't know if that means anything. I have World monster candy boxes that don't say that so it may help date the sets. Don't know, though.
Richard, that link says 1993, so I'm thinking that's the date.
Thanks for sharing those pics! So it did get produced, cool! Something else to look for.,..

It's kinda automatic. The more you post the higher you go. Though you don't post as often as some, your posts are of abnormally high quality. Perhaps the General can bestow a battlefield promotion?
The made in Yugoslovia boxes came out in the early ninetys... that's when I got mine . I know, I don't have any from when I was a kid. Bah!
Paper companies make all kinds of crazy elaborate promo items like this: I've got a gorgeous two-sided embossed poster with matching set of trading cards designed by Charles Burns for some different recycled paper, and my buddy Robert has a booklet of photos of Halloween masks that was designed by CSA, the same firm that did the Monster Candy, the Target mask promotion, and all the Turner Classic Movies logos, among their many other products. Their specialty is locating old public domain clip-art and slightly altering it so that it can be re-copyrighted, and selling the result as stock images. Also, they maintain a similar bank of photos of old toys and junk available as stock. Here, let my buddy Kirk Demarais tell you all about it:
http://secretfunspot.blogspot.com/2008/03/plastock-room.html (http://secretfunspot.blogspot.com/2008/03/plastock-room.html)
You should then poke around further... he's got plenty of other fun stuff to look at...including a tour of my house!
Thanks for the link, Devlin, this was a cybertrip well worth taking. I checked out all the detours along the way and eventually ended up in your living room, marveling at the King of Vacuforms:

Now that's what I call a REALLY GIGANTIC Frankenstein!
Charles S. Anderson has produced a few books dealing with kitchy designs from the 60's. Some of the images are nice, but many are manipulated or overprinted with other images for "artistic" effect. Here's the one with some horror content.

Thanks Richard for the incredibly informative post regarding the French Rayon monster cards. After you mentioned the recalled cards, I ran to my monster room and checked my box of cards for any controversial cards. Unfortunately, there's no controversy inside my box; only politically correct monster cards. :(
Hey this thread was started almost a year ago!
Barlow, I don't really know anything about the Count Yorga button. I don't even remember where I got it! Possibly off ebay but I've had it for years. The front is actually a white sticker stuck onto some other button. I can't make out what the button originally was. So I don't know if this is something some fan just made or if it was a real short run produced for some local haunted house or what.

I doubt very much that the bag is from before the early eighties. The anti-smoking, anti-kiddie fun brigade hadn't gotten rid of candy cigarettes until the eighties.
???
Hey guys, the monster candy cigarettes in the tiny box's came out in the mid-sixties, around 63 or 64. I remember them. I have a few of the original box's, they have the date 1963 on them on an end flap. To find one today is tough, they are rare. I also have an original bag, dated 1963 that they came in. Clear bag with great graphics, originally contained 80 pieces, Glen Strange Frankenstein with house and tree in background on left, dracula shooting "rays" out of his eyes hitting frightened halloween cat, mummy comming up out of the ground, and a bat flying around. On the back, great image of wolfman and phantom. Saw it on e-bay years ago, couldn't believe one still existed! Hardly any bidders at the time, snagged it. Bag is dated 1963 Universal Pictures, by World Candy. I know you'll want pictures, but I don't have a camera to post, and really don't know how to do it anyway. Maybe someone else has a bag, or it could be found another way?
Do you have a photocopier/printer?

If not any print shop could scan it and send the scans to your email address. If you then forwarded the email with the pictures to me, I could post the pictures.

i always thought i had a set of these candy cigs but when i looked i dont have a Mummy!! Dam! another thing to find!

Wow, sure lots like chocolate cigarettes. I wonder how long it will be until someone tries to get them ban. Cancer or diabetes...tough choice.
If memory serves, busybodies got them banned in the first place, if banned is the right word. I do not want to see anyone start smoking (I say that as I vape) but I'm glad to see them back.
You just know the tobacco pushers are putting these out, because teen smoking is down.
Those are freakin' awesome.

Maybe someone else has a bag, or it could be found another way?
did a picture ever appear of the bag he describes with the awesome graphics? Man, that would be monsterous if it showed up here.
found this interesting auction on eBay, 2013! so did anybody here snag this 4 box set of candy cigs? Man Oh Man.

Thats right! You are the creature guy! I would love the mummy, because he is the hardest one to find. Somebody here has got to know whom snagged this.
Not necessarily. I have discovered a lot of collectors don't even know about our little forums over here. I always invite them to join us when they say they didnt know about us. I dunno if they do tho, lol.
Well, I guess its true enough, I didn't learn about this forum until a few years ago. BUT still, UMA is nationwide, you would think word of mouth from coast to coast.
I know all the vendors at the toy show Kane County IL, know about UMA.
Can somebody sell me a mummy candy cigarette box please. or trade?
I was supposed to get something very special in the mail today but the post office flubbed and its sitting there right now and I won't be able to access it till tomorrow.
when I do, it will show up under the Elwar Mystery Button thread.....

So, you're only interested in the one that says "cigarettes" on it?
Yes. political correctness is OUT THE WINDOW.
Why, at one time, the parents cried out at the degenerate effect of Monster Magazines on young impressionable minds.
So yes, the ones that say cigarettes on them. preferably. I wouldn't turn my nose up to non-filtered either.

I would love not to have to, if somebody can tell me where I can buy (a Creature) one at a reasonable price (i.e. not some nutty ebay seller who's asking a grand for one).
BTW, this has nothing to do with PC. If you were advocating putting the word "cigarettes" on
new candy items, everybody should be against that.
Vintage items are another thing altogether.
Yes agreed, vintage is great. I want any Mummy version I can get. The Universal Monster Candy boxes of course.
here is a vintage cheap auction that includes the Creature and its not a million dollars either. Mike Scott, if you were looking.
I don't suppose its the 1963 since that would carry the copyright on the bottom but still its a start . In fact I might snatch one up myself and then slowly replace them with the vintage ones.

Yes any Mummy Candy box, Universal or 90's version. Or did the company stop making the Mummy boxes after 1963? Ill take whatever I can get as far as the mummy candy box goes.
I guess that auction is not what people are looking for or they would have sold out by now. I thought it was a fair enough price but maybe I am easily fooled.

If you want a Mummy, it'll have to be a '60s one. The later ones drop The Mummy.
I wish so bad that I could get a picture of this original bag of these candies, right now it's the only one I know of that still exists! I remember them from Halloween trick or treating, getting many in my bag of "goodies" way back then. Back in the sixties, here in Reading, we had an A&P food store, along with an ACME, they were actually next to each other in the city on Penn Street, I sort of remember seeing the bags of them as a kid, all that great vintage (now) Halloween stuff back then, along with the great toy displays in the supermarkets on top of the food shelves! I only own 2 or 3 original 1963 boxes, otherwise, I'd let some go, but, they are really rare.

I openly admit, I'm NOT good with these things on the computer, but, you already knew that. I hope that these are ok for you, this is the "original"1963 bag that these came in. I also took photos of my Mummy box, it's not in the best shape, but as mentioned, really scarce, I only have one or two others of the other monsters buried somewhere in a box. If I had duplicates, I'd trade, but unfortunately I don't, least right now anyway.

And another one I've never seen! Thanks for posting it!
As you can tell, one or two of the wax figures leaked a bit , this is how I found this piece, it looks the same now as it did 15 years ago when I purchased it.
What year do you think they could be from? I'm thinking 1967.
???
Great stuff!
Tough to tell when they were released, I know the card has a zip code, the price printed on the card is still pretty low though, I remember buying these in single form on a card around 1965 for about 5 cents, so 5 of them would be about 25 cents, I'd probably guess around 1965 or 66.
SHAZAM! What other treasures do you have?!?!?!? You saved everything, how on earth did you parents not throw stuff out? All my cool monster stuff from my childhood is gone.
I am so grateful that you are sharing your pics, more please?
(this might explain why I buy all the cool stuff from back then and I pay thru the roof for it, but I don't care.)
Well, I wish I had saved all my monster stuff that I had as a kid, but, like you, and most all of us here, it all got thrown away too. I was actually remembering from memory buying these things as a kid and the price of them back then. This particular piece was purchased by me about 15 years ago, it was actually found in an old corner variety store that closed up years ago, here in Reading, there was a box or 2 of old items that were found inside, ready to be thrown out!!! I too buy the cool stuff from back then, and, I've been known to pay through the roof too sometimes. Just remember, when I was a kid growing up in the late fifties and sixties, the toys we all had were just that, toys. They were meant to be played with, they certainly were, and after a while, usually discarded. We didn't realize back then the future collectability of these items, they were meant to be played with, not saved.
I still play with my new toys. actually what I do, if the item is small enough, I will bring it to work and set it in front of my computer, and look down at it from time to time. The people at work love this stuff, and a couple people have started their own collection.
There is a Elwar mystery button thread you should check out, Skully. You might dig the pics I posted of some new found 1st run monster buttons.
Heck, you might even own a set, who knows, but check out that thread, the artwork on the buttons is (insert Universal's Monster voice from their videos here) "To Die For."

I was watching these also, but declined to bid. These probably came out a year or 2, or more, from the original ones that said "cigarettes" on the box, I'm sure they are still scarce because of the year and copyright on them.
The wax syrup-filled monsters Skully pictured above are really rare and great. I have this wax syrup-filled monster which I've had since I was a kid. I remember syrup filled wax cigars being sold loose individually in my neck of the woods, but I don't remember any specific wax figures.
???
Hep, back in the day (60's), there were lots of syrup-filled wax novelties, I sort of remember the cigars, and I remember syrup-filled pencils among others, as well as these monsters. There were single monsters packaged with a cardboard back, and I honestly can't recall just how many boxes of the Phoenix Monster candies I bought, but it was sure a lot, I can still remember them in all the corner stores here in Reading buying them after school. I can still remember standing in line, finally telling the cashier "2 of that, 3 of that, 5 of that", and watching them grab the gems out of the boxes putting them into small bags and paying mere pennies, what fun!

Hey Mike! Well, once in a while I would cut up a box for the back picture, and kept them for a while with my monster gum cards (had tons of these too), it was just considered another neat monster item at the time. I have said this many, many times before, no one knew, or even imagined what these items would be worth one day, to a 9 or 10 year old at the time, it was just another, neat, new monster thing that was being seen practically all the time back then. Those small "mom-and pop" corner variety stores here in Reading at the time really hold some special memories for me with all the monster stuff that I bought as a kid. Believe me Mike, I too almost faint when I think about it!

I used to feel that way about old mom and pop variety stores until the late nineties or so. Once my collection of kids' stuff exceeded the wildest dreams I had as a kid though, I lost that longing/pining/sadness I used to feel.
:)
Hep, it is tough to "screw the question" of worth with items like these now a days, for those of us in the know. We collect these items because we like them and remember them, and yes, I surely did find some of these items put to the curb ready to be taken away in the trash years ago when a mom and pop store was purchased and renovated into apartments, the owners had no idea what they were throwing away. If one only looks at "worth", well, then I guess you could go out on a limb and call the person philistine, but for us that remember, it's much different. We were there with the early culture of these items, they were an early part of our life. However, I still have a sadness and longing, be it only for the memories of a time long gone.

That's candy? Looks like strips of paper. (Probably tastes like it, too!)

I never ate any of it. It looks to me like a combination of sugar and chalk.
Well there's no way I would have been able to resist eating the candy. In fact back in 2005 or so I opened a pack of 1960 Topps Funny Valentines A cards which I'd bought for the wrapper:

I then ate the gum. It was crumbly and there was a bit of bitterness to it as well as the sweetness. Overall it wasn't very good.
cl:)
Yep, that's what was inside the World Candy monster boxes when I was a kid. They switched from "candy sticks" (cigarettes) sometime in the mid- to late '80s when there was the big push to curb smoking in G and PG movies, ban cigarette sponsorships in major league sports, etc. They were about the same texture as Topps gum (which is to say harder than a brick) and tasted like SweeTarts, IIRC. I'm not sure when they switched back to "candy sticks," but I like them a lot better!
My blow mold candy containers from the '60s:

The candy was small beads stored in the plastic tubes. I had many of these as a kid in the '60s but time ripped them away. These I bought from an eBay seller.
That Devil looks just like the Mold-A-Rama sculpt.

Yeah, that devil sculpt saw a lot of mileage back in the day. I have a saved eBay search for "Halloween devil" and still haven't bought any others because they usually sell for more than I'm willing to pay. Love the sculpt. >:D

There's a new tie out with the Monster Candy art on it -

That's awesome. I used to wear themed ties back in my banking days. I totally would have worn that.

Nik-L-Nip wasn't monster oriented but was similar to the syrup filled wax monsters.

Oh man! I remember the Wowee Whistles, but I think they were sold loose bereft of packaging. However they were sold they're mega cool. Mmmmmmm, so good, and so good for you!

Now here's another interesting item from Freddie Poe's collection that he got from Zacherley:

The box suggests that we monster kids collect all four and Freddie surmises that Vampira, Dr. Shock and Ghoulardi were viable candidates to fill out the set. Unfortunately neither of us can tell you any more about these candy boxes. Does anybody here have any further insight with regard to their origin or contents?
???
Interesting that there's no expiry date on the $1.00 Zacherley poster offer. It should still be good therefore!

Hah! So they're fan pieces done in 2008 by our own Mike Scott and Gasport.

Here's a good article on monster candy:

OMG! Has it been a decade?
And there was a expiration date on that Zach poster. Dec. 31, 1969. ;D

Here's a good article on monster candy:
He got the line-up wrong on the World Candies boxes. The '60s set has a Mummy, which was later replaced with The Phantom.
And he didn't have the Phoenix boxes.
Yeah, he's a bad man. There's quite a few good monster candies he missed. He should be blackballed from joining UMA.
C:)
Just sayin'! ;D
What are the measurements on these boxes?
