Title: Favorite comic book ads
Post by: Wicked Lester on March 19, 2011, 05:54:04 PM
I wasn't sure where I should put this so the Mods can move it to the right spot if needed.
Let's see some of your fave ads from old comic books whether they be monsters , race sets , cereal or really anything.
Today I was looking at one of my later issues of House of Mystery and thought this was a bit humorous on the BC. So I'll start with this.

Show them your heels. He sure did.
Show them you're a heel. Did that too.

This one always disturbed me:

Firstly, who had a salt water tank set up back then so that the sea horses would live for more than a day or two?

The truly horrific one is for a monkey.  Yes, some people do have them as pets, but these poo-flinging animals can be quite a handful.  Of course, I would have loved to send away for either of these things as a kid.

This one for the Aurora Monster Scenes line of model kits. Vampirella was anatomically correct with visible camel toe. Mothers were appalled but young boys were enthralled.

I got suckerd in with the ad on back of alot of comics that got you about 100 toy soldiers and vehicles for $1. When I got them they were hard, extremely flat and thin plastic things that hit the trash pronto!  Buddy

I think I tried to talk my parents into letting me send away for this:

Apparently this is what looked like in person (made of cardboard) and apparently it does NOT use Nuclear power.  lol

Similar items that probably didn't live up to the hype:

I sent away for the Jiu-Jitsu booklet on this page because I too wanted to be tough.

It didn't work, primarily I imagine because the buggers didn't send it. That's what comes of stuffing Canadian money into an envelope addressed to a dodgy U.S. company.

I used to love the Johnson Smith and Abracadabra Magic Shop ads, with their assortments of cheap joke and magic items...I ordered an assortment of joke gum at one point, I think it cost all of $1, but I got some sticks of onion gum, bloody gum, hot pepper gum, and garlic gum.  Wow, what cool days those were.  The gum took a million years to arrive, but it was all worth it.  The memories are priceless.

Great ads. The only reason I've seen these all before is cuz I have a few thousand comics on CD. I really liked the multi-gym one. Little guy builds up and knocks down a big mouth co worker and actually gets promoted with a hand shake from the boss telling him he IS the man. Now it would be fired ,arrested and sued.

I don't really remember who made which set but I did get an 4" x 6" cardboard foot locker with H.O guys and either N or maybe Z scale plastic tanks. Comparing scale the soldiers were like 18' tall.

One of the main suppliers of these sets was Helen of Toy Co. There is actually a book out there somewhere with pics of all the stuff they sold.

Mego "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" action figures advertisement, Marvel Star Trek comic, 1980. The 3.75" Rigellian was actually a Saurian. I sent "Heroes World" an enquiry letter from Australia and they only had the alien figures left. Of course, they've turned out to be the rare ones. I almost got to visit the "Heroes World" in Michigan in 1984, during a trip to USA, but we phoned ahead and they nothing Star Trek in stock.

I had the first Moon Monster. It was pretty cool for what it was tho it had heavy creases from being folded up for who knows how long. The freebie "terrifying" masks were pretty cheesy. Basically a cartoony looking monster on heavy paper that you put a string thru to wear. At least that is the version I got. I don't recall what the 4 x 5 photos were.

No, the 8" TOS Mego set had the rare Romulan. When TMP came along, Mego tried two sizes: 3.75" (to compete with "Star Wars") and 12". There weren't any Romulans in TMP, just Klingons and some new UFP races.

Not a comic ad, but an inside-cover ad in a theatre program for a 60s stage show musical, based on a popular Aussie kids in the mid 60s. I love the hard-sell approach:

Those freakin' flat toy soldiers appear to have been the bane of our shared existence! I remember drooling over how many tanks and jeeps I was going to get (thinking they would be the same size as my regular army men toys) only to be extremely disappointed when they finally arrived in the mail.

P.S. I love that Moon Monster poster. Someone should do an action figure, three dimensional statue or model kit of that figure. I'm pretty sure nobody owns the rights to that character.

This long running ad for Sea Monkeys is among the most classic ever:

I have a pair that I believe are vintage.  They belonged to my grandmother's brother.

Sea Monkeys are sold in far fancier packaging with elaborate living quarters included these days.

Originally they were marketed not only through comic books but in those little canisters dispensed through vending machines. I remember them for a quarter.

WOW! I had that. I can't remember how many times I looked through that at all the cool stuff. I think it disappeared around 20 years ago when I sold over half my comics.

Rob, that's the first pair I've ever actually SEEN. AWESOME!! Of course, like all growing boys, I wanted a pair. For purely experimental purposes of course.  :D

I never pulled the trigger because a couple of my friends who sent money to buy something from one of those ads in the comic books never received their merchandise. Now I wish I had taken the chance.

Yes, Rod.  We got a naval edition of those flat servicemen.  Also, the ad mentions waves---------and we thought we would get some cool tidal wave thing.  The were female personnel.  Ewww!

Cool! How well do they work? What do you see looking at your fingers?

The way they "work" is that it creates a double image of whatever you're looking at and they don't overlap perfectly, so it appears as though the section that does overlap, is the bones underneath.  I guess that's why the ad had the people looking "through" their own hand and not cracking safes.

Oh, and Scatter, you might want to have that mole on your thigh looked at by a doctor!

I got a pair from a friend for my thirteenth birthday, and I couldn't believe that I finally owned something that was advertised in one of those cool catalog pages of a US comic. (Later, my brother and I realised that the Aussie printings of US comics had similar ads, but for a Sydney-based shop called Weirdo's Magic Shop in the city, and we made an epic trip there one day!) We also found a local toy shop that sold some of these products, such as smoking monkeys (little plastic monkeys that puffed on tiny cigarettes that you could light), also so-called "real live snakes" (little cylinders of dense black carbon, that grew and grew into a huge, lightweight, carbon "snake" when you lit it), black-face soap, fake vomit, fake doggie doo complete with plastic flies, and Sea Monkeys (we actually bought a little vial of regular brine shrimp, not the highly commercial version, and followed the instructions, but they never hatched). I also finally found a Venus Fly Trap, which were finally permitted to be sold in Australia in the early 80s, gaining huge popularity because of their appearance in a flyspray TV commercial.

Did you ever see what was covering the eyeholes of 3D Specs? After a few weeks, my specs got wet and I was horrified to notice that the black substance had parted ways. The specs certainly weren't working any more, so I split open the cardboard "lens" - and it contained a black feather! You know how you can split a feather along its "veins"? The lines of feather "veins", and the distance between them, combined to create the optical illusion of seeing bones through skin.

Oh, and I posted once before, I had the "Monster S-i-z-e Monster", too:

Yes, I did notice that the center of the "lens" had a feather in it.  I used to have a hard plastic smoking Dachund, but I'm not sure if it's still around anywhere.  I do have a cheap hollow smoking monkey.  I remember all of those cool gift shop "magic" items (especially from Adams) that were also advertised in comics like Smoke from your fingertips, Whoopee cushioons, etc.

I gotta say I always enjoyed the old ads of a muscle guy on a beach and a skinny guy with a girl.  Then the muscle guy takes the girl away.  But then, the skinny guy drinks protein and wins the girl back.  Classic!  Drink protein and nobody will take your girlfriend.

Question?  Why didn't the muscle guy already have a girlfriend and the skinny "weakling" have one?

Some facts..The two moon monsters are as follows. The really cool looking one on top was sold from 1962 and after. The one in the Bottom of which I also own was first sold when the Monster fan club was started in late 1958 and is very rare...The x-ray glasses  with the plastic frame are the first generation...Yes they are vintage....The 7 Feet Monster size monsters are out there but are selling as high as $500.00 or more for each...I sold a total of 11 7 feet plastic Frankenstein and 9 7 feet Boney the skeleton....Mistake now I only own two of each...I sold them back when eBay was new... Belief me when I say this the ones the collectors are now selling on eBay for $500.00 most were mine....The owner of Honor House gave them to me in 1985...He gave me 13 Frankenstein and 11 Boneys...In the original packages and I like a moron sold them from $40.00 to $215.00...each...I want to put my collection in some type of museum now this 7 feet monsters are not as rare as my two 7 feet Monster Ghost, the Johnson Smith and the Melton company ones...and my Polaris sub...etc..

Quote from: houseoftheunusual on July 29, 2011, 03:37:57 AMThe 7 Feet Monster size monsters are out there but are selling as high as $500.00 or more for each...I sold a total of 11 7 feet plastic Frankenstein and 9 7 feet Boney the skeleton....Mistake now I only own two of each...I sold them back when eBay was new... Belief me when I say this the ones the collectors are now selling on eBay for $500.00 most were mine....The owner of Honor House gave them to me in 1985...He gave me 13 Frankenstein and 11 Boneys...In the original packages and I like a moron sold them from $40.00 to $215.00...each...

Well since you got them for nothing you still realized an infinite return on your "investment". The owner of Honor House was infintely more of a moron than you were.

No. I picked this up at my local comic shop earlier this year for 25¢.

I used to get these back in the late 70's. They had cool Joe Kubert covers. My folks would always get me the latest Stan Lee hardback book (Origins, Son of Origins, etc) for Christmas and they'd order them from this catalog. I think they also ordered one of those marvel coins for me. I have three of them, Conan, Spider-Man and Hulk but I think there's a Fantastic Four one if memory serves.

Funny that you say this...Ready for this his werehouse manager told me that those he  had given me were his last...Here is the part that made me cry. A month before I had gone there he said they had put tons of them in the garbage. Along with subs and all the stuff they had....At the time I said who cares, but today after eBay I now cry!!!

QuoteOMG, I had one of the Mattel M-16 guns.  Haven't thought about that in years.

Ha! Just seeing this post! LOVE the Mattel M-16! Very unique toy gun for it's time......or really any time! You could get short or long bursts....pull the bolt back once-9 shots with a pull of the trigger...BUT...if you pulled the bolt back 6 times you got a continuous stream of 50 shots! And each shot is disturbingly loud! The wife comes to the top of the stairs and tells me to cut-it-out every time I fire this thing!  Buddy

I'd love to give a frustrated kid with your typical modern mother a gun like this one for Xmas. He'd be delighted; she'd be aghast.

I thought it might be both fun and edifying to take one specific comic and scan every single ad in it.  Sort of like a time capsule. Accordingly, I reached in my beater box and pulled out a comic that graced the newstands just over fifty years ago:

I found these ads interspersed among the 130 story panels and other features. I started the numbering with the cover as page 1:

It's no wonder the Aurora monster model kits were a smash hit with youngsters. Check out these ads that appeared on the back of DC comics in 1963-64:

Rip Hunter 17

Combined with the fabulous box art by James Bama, kids didn't stand a chance of resisting these on store shelves!

Mmmm, after seeing these ads in US comics over many, many years, it finally turned up in our local Magnamail mail order catalogue. My mother agreed to order me one for my birthday (I was about 14 - 1972?), and the result was very underwhelming, especially the tiny box it arrived in! While it appears to be a large, commercial overhead projector (only just starting to become popular in schools in the 70s), it was extremely tiny and required no power source to operate. The ad misleadingly shows the artists using the device from a distance, but the barely-visible superimposed image you are supposed to trace can only be seen on the paper if you press your eye to the viewer. (Then you can't really control your pencil very well.) Mine had a hairline crack in the base, where the upright pole was supposed to connect, so there was enough wobble to be annoying. When copying a 2D artwork, the source material had to be pinned upside down on a wall. It was hopeless trying to get enough light to fall on a 3D object. The trickiest thing was directing light across the source material to illuminate the image clearly - I spent a long time trying to direct a goosenecked desk lamp at the right angle (that I had to return to to my Dad's desk as soon as possible). I used the device once, then hid it in a drawer.

My old pantograph was more fun.

Same here on the memories. Let's face it, most of these (like the Sea Monkeys) were crap. But for those of us lucky enough to have read the hundreds of ads for x-ray specs, throw your voice, life-size monster ghosts, and submarines that cost $3, the imagination of an 8-year-old provided much more fun in our minds than any of the real products for sale.
The real product ordered would have disappointed me (especially the submarine). But my imagination as a kid NEVER disappointed me, and left me with very fond memories.

The Sea Monkeys were awesome because you GREW your creatures--like cultures...grew them as nature does!  No, but seriously.  Some of my Sea Monkeys got pretty big.  I got really lucky the first time out with Sea Monkeys.  But I really wanted them to be little orange people like in the ad.  We didn't get them through the mail, by the way, but got them at the local toy store.

I did mail order the joke gum around 1975, and I believe Abracadabra Magic Shop was the ad it was ordered from.  Took about a month for them to arrive.  There was the Onion Gum, the Hot Pepper Gum and the Bloody Gum--two or three sticks of each, thrown individually paper-wrapped, but unlabeled, into an envelope.  A Pucker Gum was available but was not included in this $1 "assortment."

So these I dutifully took to school.  There was one friend who loved practical jokes as much as I did (the snapping gum, squirting flowes and suchlike).  We examined the sticks of gum and tried some.  The Hot Pepper Gum was pale but had little red flecks, and when chewed was mildly spicy, not really hot.  The Onion Gum was just pale, and smelled like onions before it got chewed; tasted very oniony, but surprisingly, it was not horrible.   Maybe it might have been if unexpected.  Most odd was the Bloody Gum, unwrapping the stick we saw it was dark, dark, dark red.  I broke off a little piece and chewed it.  It had no flavor, was just sugary.  My buddy chewed up the rest of the stick and then ran off and tried to scare people, purposefully drooling this red food coloring gum-juice onto the playground.  Some image!

I've tracked down the respective months when the DC comics with these fabulous Aurora monster model ads hit the newsstands:

September 1963

January 1964

September 1964

December 1964

August 1965

It's no wonder the Aurora monster model kits were a smash hit with youngsters! Combined with the fabulous box art by James Bama, young fellows didn't stand a chance of resisting these kits on store shelves.

Hep, thanks for that link.

One thing I've enjoy about Hubby is that he remembered what concepts were attracting to him as a child - not just a boy, but apparently children at certain ages.

For example, the Gross-Out Word Choice for foods... calling red beans & rice by "spider-bellies & gooey eggs".  If I asked if they wanted Red Beans & Rice (which they always devoured), they'd sneer and shake their head, disinterested to say the least.

But when Hubby asked if they wouldn't like "spider bellies and gooey eggs", they were ALL excited for that dish.

He understood cauliflowers were clouds and brocolli was 'buttered trees' and the kids could be monsters only if they ate those.  So they naturally gobbled them, each and every time.  I sat back in amazement.  "How do you know this?"  He remembered it from his days as kid - sometimes, that's only a week ago, so, well...

Looking at these ads reminds me of the powerful effect that fantasies - gore and goo and gross-outs - can be powerful agents for children.  That thread on Vampirella seems to have a few accurate notices of that, but one thing that isn't mentioned - a finely honed body-structure might be too brittle, so she needed those "hips & legs of a horse"... actually, no horse's anatomy looks like those.  Those are hog hinds and legs.   Perhaps the writer was being kind when he used "horse".  ha ha

Yes.  Personally, I had great reasons - I was a 'late' child in the, uh, production and was raised around my parents and their pals - always adults who praised and lauded articulation, vocabulary, gadgety skills, etc.  Package that with Every Child's Desire to be older, do older things, and well... stilted childhoods don't need to be bad but they can be sterile and devoid.

As parent of now-former Elem students and still a weekly volunteer at that Elem, I see so many 30-ish parents that seem to have slammed those memories away.   They become something between Thoughtless and Inconsiderate.  And stunningly uncreative - ANTI-creative, sometimes.

We do well when demonstrations over time pay off and see those folks have considered thoughts ("What if - ?") and display some memory dredgings.  But I hear so many tales of broken childhoods and hordes of 'things' instead of good family tales, and all they see now are 'things' and almost acidly avoid filling their kids' lives with Things instead of themselves.  Good.  BUT WHAT ABOUT GOOD FAMILY TIMES, then?  That's something they don't always know how to construct.  "I've never seen it so I can't imagine how to do it" - this is that Thoughtlessness.

Well, I know this era of society is different from the Babyboomers.  There were "things galore" then, too - just look at these comic ads.  But Aurora and Revelle etc models didn't require an adult's budget.  Nor did comics at 10-12 cents a piece, where $2-3 worth could fill the neighborhood kids' afternoons for a week.

There aren't cereal-box baseball cards.  Now, they're expensive and - like comics - are only to be treasured, not traded, not passed around from one hip-pocket to another, not tacked into bicycle spokes.

The TV shows - a constant railing exercise for me - are so anti-child-centric, or else kids' networks (like Disney) have 17-20 minutes of product advertising in a 30-min period.  NO.

Well... this is why God invented boxsets and media-players.  I'm pretty sure of that.

Truth. Kids' shows these days seem to be designed specifically to sell a toy line based on the show based on the toy line.

Every line above cracks me up.  Spit-laffs... Polaris subs, 2 kids inside, hours of adventures.  Lordy, I'd have loved something like that.  "Father, could I mount the missiles as a propulsion system, and maybe make it to the moon?"  Hours later, I'd return to earth.  Father's greenhouse with that busted-out glass roof.  "It's the only one with that, Father - I'm sure I'd see it."

Selling GRIT?! Long forgotten memory. I tried that when I was maybe 11-12. I got 16 cents an issue commission. Spent entire Saturday afternoons ringing doorbells. That was as big a waste of time(when I COULD have been watching monster movies) as selling packets of seeds.
Kids, sell only 4000 packets of and win a bike. Yeah,ok. Does anyone on here even know somebody that did that?

TheBatman's pix - is that the control-cockpit of the Polaris "fun for hours" Submarine?  A nuke, no less!!

(Wow - well, actually, what else would I have expected?  Only Tommy Lee Jones would go find an old pigboat when facing contemporary Steven Seagal.)

I'd never had a chair turned over with a sheet or blanket thrown over it for 'camp outs', but this is one of those li'l things Hubby did for our kids, and all the neighbors joined in.  Any parent who wanted a night out has built-in babysitters AS LONG AS those houses offer to lay over a few chairs, toss a sheet or two over them and put blankets and pillows out there for 'camp outs'.  Who'da thunkit?

I mentioned the loss of baseball cards, comics, model-building but I also forgot that "paperboy" was often a first-job for even 12-13 year olds, like Hubby had.  WICKED's comment about spending his Saturdays selling "Grit" (?? what's this magazine about ?? is this a Boy's Life or Classics Illustrated type ??) made me remember this was my Hubby's other regret - that he couldn't send his own son to follow a long family tradition of being a paperboy.  ah well...

I had a paper route as a twelve year old in 1964.  I delivered thirty copies of the London Free Press every morning six days a week, eighteen of which I dropped on a hospital desk, ten within the halls of an apartment building next to the hospital and two to individual houses across the street. It was a dream paper route and left me flush with the princely sum of $2.76 per week of earnings!

The helicopter parents of this day and age would of course be horrified at the thought of twelve year olds off by themselves doing anything let alone delivering newspapers.  ::) We were all still free range kids back in the sixties though.

Here are many of the ads that could have been found perusing the DC comics on the newsstand fifty years ago:

Wow! What kid wouldn't want to fill his basket with all that cool stuff? Financing the purchases would be a problem though.

Wow! Tom Daniels! So cool!

Anybody who ordered any of the penny flats was disappointed. The actual product didn't come close to what was portrayed in the ads.

We should have stocked up at your local variety store! Matchbox cars are still hotly collected these days.

Yeah marbles! My marbles are one of the few items I still have from my formative years. That's because my father put them all in a tin cookie jar and saved them in his work room. I now have them proudly on display on top of my my pop/milk bottle pantry in one of those hexagonal goldfish bowls.

Oh, cheap but CHEAP. Still, for under a penny per figure, quite a bargain.

Well then let's go back in time a couple of months! These are some of the ads that might have been encountered flipping through the DC comics on the newsstand in December 1968:

The Tom Daniel kits were wild cool! And the Pie Wagon was among the very coolest.

I always used to admire the Matchbox cars in the window of Steve's Variety/Gift Shop on Wortley Road in the early sixties. At $0.29 each (or was it $0.39?), admiring them was about as far as I got though. Matchbox car collecting I understand is particularly popular in the U.K. these days.

Interesting that Justice League of America 69 carried the above ad since it was aimed specifically at girls!

Many of the ads were of course for items young boys might appreciate as Xmas presents.

Ads for items that would have made for dandy Xmas presents for boys absolutely dominated the ad space in the DC comics that could have been on any neighbourhood newsstand in November 1968:

Man, I still want some of those model kits and other toys today!

But let's go back over sixty years! Here are the ads that would have been found in most DC comics hitting newsstands in February 1959:

I sent away for that Jiu-Jitsu book a few years later because I too wanted to be tough. I never received it though. I guess that explains why I wasn't all that tough as a kid.

And Ron F. in my grade six class in 1962 had one of those skull rings. It was super cool! I wonder how much one would fetch today?

Oh man! I still love that Tootsie Roll bear!

Now why would a company opt to advertise British Empire stamps in a publication bought primarily by American kids?  ???

Hmmmmm. Methinks seeds or even greeting cards would be easier to sell door-to-door than sappy mottoes. Well maybe a young fellow could hit up his mother's church group or something....

Wow! That's what I needed at the age of eight, a physique like Superman's! These days of course a runt like Superman couldn't even qualify for the Mr. Olympia contest.

The introduction of Hot Wheels in 1968 had revolutionized the toy diecast auto industry. Hot Wheels cars were equipped with wide, hard-plastic tires that created much less friction and tracked more smoothly than the narrow metal or plastic wheels used by competitors such as Matchbox at the time.

Since 1968 over six billion Hot Wheels vehicles have been sold. Ten are sold per second these days! One of the key factors behind the ongoing sales success of Hot Wheels has been the complete lack of price inflation. The retail price per vehicle in 1968 was $0.98; the price today is still $0.98.
