I agree with said before the Runaways were not a metal band but they were a great rock band with tons of punk elements in their music and live show.

Cherie Curie was hot as a teen front woman....

....and she's still looks pretty damn good right now!

BlackLagoon

Oh yeah...how did Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics get overlooked?!

That woman was a powerhouse of a performer! A punk legend with plently of metal mixed in!

RIP Wendy!

Well...  :o ummmmm....yeh,  ;D  she is HOT!!!   >:D

\m/

my new trademark...(thanks again Blacklagoon, for it was ye...who, I seen the Metal Horns..first place.)

BlackLagoon

Though not a member of Gwar anymore, the charecter Slymenstra Hymen was had a pretty big role with the live show. (the one song she sang is horrible though...its on a horrible album too).

Believe it or not, without the make up and all the crap on her, she's a really cute, girl next door looking chick.

Baron. You need to do some exploring bro. You are missing out on a LOT of great music and voices.

I will definitely check some out on Youtube tomorrow and see what's up.

This is a very open ended poll depending on one's view of "metal".  For me pure metal is Black Sabbath, Holocaust, Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden, Pantera, Diamond Head and bands of that ilk.  So for me there has never been a female contemporary to any of those bands.  Both Lita Ford, Doro Pesch(Warlock) and Janet Gardner(Vixen) are more 80's era glam/cock rock, ala Motley Crue, Poison, Skid Row, etc. though I know many lump them all into the metal categary.  Anette Olzon(Nightwish), Morgan Lander(Kittie), Cristina Scabbia(Lacuna Coil), Otep Shamaya(Otep) and Tarja Turunen(Nightwish) would all fall under Nu metal certainly none of these bands have been around long enough to be so legendary.

So if you are going to include such a diverse group then certainly L7 could be included as well as Betty Blowtorch, Courtney Love, Amy Lee (Evanesence)...help me out I know there are more.....but I would definitely say that The Runaways and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts as well would be straight up rock and could not be included in a "metal" poll.  Also if you include Lita, Warlock and Vixen then certainly Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) shouldn't be left out!!

BL is certainly right about Wendy O., I mean common even though The Plasmatics were/are considered punk they had an ep titled Metal Priestess!!  If punk can be included then you have to throw in Kira Roessler of Black Flag too!

I doubt you'll find any band on a top metal bands list that has a female member.....White Zombie would probably be the only exception so I guess Sean Ysuelt would stand a good a chance as any of these ladies to be the queen of metal!

Nightwish and Lacuna Coil do NOT fall under the heading of Nu Metal. That is Gothmetal with Nightwish being the better of the 2. And this is the genre where you will find some of the best female vocalists in metal just for the power of it. The formula is "beauty and the beast" style.

Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy developed the "beauty and the beast" aesthetic of combining aggressive male vocals with clean female vocals, a contrast that has since been adopted by many gothic metal groups. During the mid-1990s, Moonspell, Theatres des Vampires and Cradle of Filth brought the gothic approach to black metal. By the end of the decade, a symphonic metal variant of gothic metal had been developed by Tristania and Within Temptation.

Call me biased since this is one of my fave forms of music but just for sheer F'ing talent ya gotta give em a thumbs up. Many of these ladies are classically trained and the formula of the B&B is HUGE. BTW Nightwish has been around for 13 years so not exactly rookies.

Going back to old school basic metal and YES Nu Metal I am gonna say that Karyn Crisis is at the top. I'll post a new thread with links to videos so I don't jam up Docs comp.

Gillman-Fan

I'd like to write-in Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford as the biggest "Metal Queen" of all time.

BlackLagoon

Haha, that was pretty funny.

Though, I wouldn't care if he made out with goats--Halford rocks.

I'm not impugning his vocal prowess . . . his musical talent is beyond reproach.

I'm not into either of these bands but checked out 4 or so songs from each one to form my opinion and though they may have subtle extra layers to me they boil down to Nu metal.  The term Goth metal may be the silliest sub-genre I've ever heard of and by "goth metal" standards it sounds like Black Sabbath was the original goth metal band whom are already sighted as the originators of doom metal!  I also never new that they tried labeling Type O as goth metal, I find that totally ludicrous they've always just been a great metal band to me.  Not to mention Marilyn Manson and Evanescensce are listed as goth metal....*cough*NU.....*cough*METAL...  They can call it what they want but to me a turd is still a turd....ok that was harsh......I'm not saying Nu metal is sh*t, it's just not my taste no matter what subgenre you want to further label it as.

It's kind of like the craziness of having so many subgenres of punk music (emo, hardcore, garage, horror, pop, ska) but they all end up being punk in the end!

BlackLagoon

Not to stray too far off topic but with all the subgenre talk--does anyone remember when they were younger and if you were asked what kind of music you were into and you said "I like metal" it covered everything from KISS to Megadeth??

I swear sometimes these sub genres kill me! I mean they are necessary, I wouldn't expect someone who is into traditional, Euro power metal to spend money on say...a band like mine, and the only reason they would know better if they hadn't heard it is to literally "read the label", but man..I can just remember being a kid with a jean jacket that had everything from Anthrax patches on it to Led Zeppelin pins.....and it was "ok".

I got asked about a Misfits shirt I was wearing at the gym the other day, then I was asked "what else do you like"--I answered "oh man, lots of old school metal and punk...from King Diamond to Discharge and everything in between" I got back a funny face and he said "oh thats cool...I'm old school too..I like early Korn"----LOL, I guess it's how you grew up. I don't consider that "old school" or metal...but to each their own.
