I'll die a happy man if I can find one of these sets again before I expire.

Today it would probably be The Mad Mad Mad Meth Lab!

And it wouldn't retail for $3.00, meth or no meth.  I'd never heard of this or the Magician set.  Can't believe both of these slipped under the radar all these years.  Today, if the thing doesn't access cyberspace, most kids wouldn't want to know.  Around the holidays I saw a display of Chris Angel "Mindfreak" magic sets, which have some cool stuff in them.  As Christmas got closer and closer, it didn't look like anyone had touched them.  Finally I grabbed one up for myself.

I take it that the Magician set never went into production. The Mad, Mad, Mad Scientist Laboratory was sold through Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine as well as through traditional retail outlets.

This one?

That's the set.  I just learned, a few days ago, there is actually a second set with over 500 illusions:  "The Criss Angel Mindfreak Ultimate Magic Kit."  Don't know all the details about the contents, but it seems to include the 250 routines from the smaller Platinum kit.  I've also seen some illusions and various trick card decks from the Mindfreak collection sold individually.

The nice thing about it is that, in addition to the usual things found in a kid's magic set, there is some pro-quality material here.  (Sponge balls, thumb tip, etc.)  An excellent series of sets are the "Magician's Apprentice" line put out by a company called Melissa and Doug:

For some reason, the site now only lists three of those sets...don't know if they've dropped the Card Tricks Unshuffled set or not.  These are a bit pricey, but the quality of the material in each is top-notch and would cost you quite a bit more if you were to buy them individually at a magic shop.

PS Did anyone as a kid try this lab set?

I did, I did! Best toy I ever had! Fabulous play value. My two best buddies squabbled with each other vying for the position of my half-brained lab assistant.

 ;D

Sadly I suspect my father disposed of it when I was packed off to boarding school for ninth grade.

 >:(

Unfortunately, those people are no longer with us.  :'(

Well a lot of people do say that this fellow Hepcat isn't all there....

There are also two different versions of this set, with different interiors and contents.

The one I had was not exactly identical to the one pictured on the first page of this thread. Inside it was like this one:

I'm wondering which of the two was/is the more common?

Another amazingly rare item of which there are at least two versions. Oof.

I'm not entirely sure that this set can be called "rare". I think it probably falls into the same category as the Mars Attacks cards and the SPP monster wallets that I call "demand scarce". These items are so revered by anyone who was exposed to them as a kid that their demand for these items very quickly sops up any offerings in the present day.

I would have to politely disagree, hepcat. This is an extremely rare set, along the same lines as the FM Photo Printing Set and unused Hasbro paint sets, obviously because of its "they were all used by the original owner" nature. It is rarer than a loose Head Speaker (but about the same as a boxed one), and MUCH MUCH rarer than the Horrorscope, which is often referred to as 'rare'. I went many years before even hearing of one in existence or actually seeing one in person.

Yes, you're probably correct. The usage factor might indeed be the key. But then again I've had a lot of success over the years finding unused Kenner Presto Sparkle Paint Sets, unbuilt model kits, never played board games, etc....

So then what's the story behind the variants?

The main components (the vials, dropper, cup, etc.) are the same, but one has more goodies in it than the other, a red tablet of "Mystic Paper" being one of them, plus the box insert is somewhat different- same graphics, but the way the insert is diecut is different to accommodate the different/extra pieces, and the way they lay inside the large box.

I also seem to remember Toy Scouts having a smaller, "plain box" mail-in version at one point, with no graphics whatsoever, and instead of the little vials, the chemicals came in little pouches with the names on them (little rip-open pouches that I think were attached to each other, like they would pack headache powders or something). The chemical names "Mummy Dust" etc. were printed on the pouches. The "plain" version was BOR-ing, and held no interest for me at all. Half the toy is the fantastic box, IMHO.

Hmmmm. You know I don't actually remember "Mystic Paper" in my set, but perhaps I've just forgotten.

Mail-in? Do you mean mail order?

I agree! When I saw that box at the hobby shop on Seven Mile Road in Detroit, I absolutely had to have it. A mad scientist was what I always aspired to be as a kid.
