R.I.P. Joseph "Hauzy" Hauze

Longtime UMA member Joseph "Hauzy" Hauze passed away Monday, June 21, 2010. Joe was an original UMA member dating back to the Yahoo Group days. He was a kind and gentle soul. He will be missed many of his online friends.  

The UMA flag flies at half mast today in his honor.

Although Hauzy hadn't been very involved with the UMA lately, like Terry mentioned, he had been a long-time member and was an extremely generous guy.  In addition to running online contests where he supplied nice prizes and even paid the postage, he would also sell stuff occasionally for great prices.  It meant something to him that items were going to a good home and I was fortunate to get a great pack of Creature items from him a couple of years back.  I spoke with him on the phone once or twice and emailed and IMed from time to time.    I had always hoped that he and I would be at the same convention sooner or later.  This news is just heartbreaking.

Joe was a great guy, and used to be very active in the UMA.  I met him at Monster Bash one year, and like Rob said, he was very generous.  Several years ago, he sent me a big box of comics and assorted stuff that was full of coolness, and I sent back a box of monstery goodness.  Joe and I emailed some, but haven't been in touch for several months. 

Although I didn't attend either show, Joe was at Chiller and the Halloween and Haunters conventions this year, and posted photos on his Facebook page.  Here are a couple of pictures of Joe, one as Captain Spaulding at the Halloween show, and another as himself.

A kind and generous guy, indeed.  Hauzy was a UMA member from the early days of the group and I certainly grieve this loss.  To an old codger like me he was a young man and is gone far, far too soon.  My sympathy to his girlfriend and his family.

Yeah, this saddens me, too. He and I exchanged messages a few times and he owns one of my paintings. He was always a very friendly, generous person. My thought and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Rest in peace, Santa Hauze (the nickname I gave him a few years back for his generous packages he used to send in the mail).  Forever there will be a little memorial within my Halloween decorations set up to you, and whenever I wear my most favorite of prizes (from a trivia contest from WAYYYYY back), a Turner Classic Movies T-shirt, I will think of your generosity.

I will ALWAYS smile when I think of you...what a wonderful legacy to leave behind.

Joseph Lincoln Hauze, 45, of Ashley, Pennsylvania died Monday, June 21, 2010, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. Joseph was born in Freeland on April 28, 1965.  Joseph graduated from Crestwood High School and attended Luzerne County Community College. He was employed as a plant operator for Mountain Top Area Joint Sanitation Authority for 20 years. Joseph enjoyed watching horror movies and attending horror movie conventions. He was an avid collector of movie memorabilia and guitars. He was a life member of the NRA and ABATE motorcycle club. He also enjoyed fishing and collecting coins.

He was preceded in death by his father and two half-brothers, Surviving, along with his mother, are four siblings; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; loving companion, Ruth; and his two cats, Jolie and Buddy, also survive.

He also left a world-wide online community of friends who remember him as being kind, humorous, and generous.  We will all miss him greatly.

Any mention on just how he passed away? I know these things are held private many times, but at just 45yrs of age my mind can't help but to ask how and why?

He was employed as a plant operator for Mountain Top Area Joint Sanitation Authority for 20 years.

I remember asking him about his job in an IM once, and he said that not only is it as bad as I might think it is, it was worse.   Still, he kept an upbeat attitude about it.

I'm going to post about a couple of examples of how generous he was.  Once he asked me if I was interested in a loose Sideshow CREATURE WALKS AMONG US figure.  As I wasn't a huge fan of the look of the Creature in this movie, I was on the fence and asked how much was he looking to get for it.  He responded, "Oh no, do you want it, you can have it."  The other time was when he was selling a lot of Creature stuff for $50.  It came with a loose regular Sideshow 12" Creature, a Funco hand puppet, one of those large reproductions of the fossilized Creature claws (like 14-15 inches tall), some collectible cards, and some other stuff.  A loose 12" Creature was selling for more than that on Ebay back then.  Hauzy's contributuions are an integral part of my collection.  He was "good people."

I have to echo Rob's sentiments. Joe sent me several books over the years. Stuff I was interested in, and he said he was thinning out his collection and didn't want them any more. He usually sent more than he told me about. If he sent something I really couldn't use or just didn't want, I did as he did and passed them along to friends or co-workers.

Really, there are lots of folks like that here on the UMA. Meek was really like that!!
