The Drunken Severed Head

Last Monday, writer Tim Lucas, at his site VIDEO WATCHBLOG,  posted a FANTASTIC essay on José Mojica Marins and Coffin Joe. (Mr. Lucas says it was originally "written for JOSE MOJICA MARINS: 50 ANOS DE CARRIERA,...published by Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in association with the Ministério da Cultura, February 2008, for which appearance it was translated into Portuguese by Ricardo Lisias.)

His essay is a well crafted, informative work of critical appreciation, and whether you love Coffin Joe movies or not, you will enjoy the essay. And Raymond's casting in the Ze do Caixao role is discussed as well.

Go to the link below, and scroll down not-quite-halfway down (past the also wonderful essay commerorating the recent 50th anniversary of the appearance of the first FAMOUS MONSTERS!):

Note to Raymond: the recent photo of Marins found in the essay has a statue of St. Louis (the man, not the city) in the background that looks like the one in Forest Park. Did Marins come and visit you...?

Thank you for linking to the article, Max, and thank you Tim Lucas for writing it.  It was a very good read.  As for the photo, I have no explanation.  He has never visited me. There is probably a similar statue in Brazil, or Tim combined the images in Photoshop.

Yes, that photo has been around on the net for a while. I do not think it has been altered at all. Probably, as Ray said, just a similar-looking statue. But it is kind of a cool coincidence, isn't it?

If Jose Mojica Marins came to the STL & Ray didn't tell me, that would burn. That photo isn't from here, but it does look a lot like the statue of St Louis. It's probably a statue of some historic Portuguese hero or something. The statue in Forest Park used to scare me when I was little. :D I used to think it would come to life or something.

Imagine Coffin Joe battling a Harryhausen-style statue come to life.  That's the kind of psychedelic sequence he might actually have attempted if he'd had the money in the 70s.

Spank, we missed you last night!

I couldn't go because my neice, Corinne, has a touch of the flu. Couple that with her asthma & I just couldn't leave her alone.
At first, I thought she was faking to get out of school early, but she did two things that proved how sick she was. 1. She didn't want to play the SIMS :o (she's a SIMS addict) & 2. She fell asleep on "This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse" & the Simpsons Movie! ::) She (& her tissues) will be out of my hair Tuesday.

Spank, I'm sorry to hear that your niece is sick, and that you were not able to attend. I hope she gets to feeling better soon. I wanted to go too, but it takes me at least a couple of weeks notice before I can make plans to go anywhere.

Ray, did you guys have a good time? How many people showed up? Did you take any photos to show us?
