World record action figure price?

...is this it?  I would love to hear of any higher price anyone has ever heard about being paid for an action figure.

How could this possibly sell so high, you can get a loose one of these really cheap like any other figure.  Is this just because of the Iron Man movies?  Also, it doesn't seem like there is any way this could be the only one.  There have to be a few really stoked guys out there who also have this carded figure.  The other thing I keep thinking is the guy who sold this is a brand new ebayer with a feedback score of 11.  Imagine him watching this thing go off!!!  Or better yet, imagine the guy who won it explaining it to his wife.

Anyway I would love to hear the UMA opinions on this epic auction and how it happened.

I don't keep up with figure prices that closely, but I know the Hake's auction a year or two ago featured a bunch of Mego figs that  went for many thousands.  There was a carded Robin figure that went for over $12k.

This seems to be a phenomenon that only affects Megos.  I never understood why anyone would pay that kind of money for a minor card variation.  Its pretty insane.

There are very high prices paid for lots of stuff that most people would find insane.  A Hot Wheels car sold for $72,000.  The original prototype GI Joe went for $200,000.  I think the record for a toy Robot is $52,000 but there are several dozen that regularly sell for multiple thousands.  Earlier this year, Action Comics #1 sold for a million bucks.

Not  saying a high price is crazy for a toy.   GI Joe Proto, Action comics # 1 etc.. that stuff your getting alot of bang for the buck.  Its the Mego card variations going for high prices that I find insane.   I understand most collecting mentalities, except the paying over 10k for a Mego lizard on a different colored card.  Megoheads just really love card variations I guess.

I know certain SWs figs carded with specific cards or cardbacks command higher prices, but they come close to 10k?
The only one I can think of that may bring that kind of cash is a vinyl cape Jawa, or some goofy Power of the force figure.

What it's really about, for most of this anyway, is investment.  The stock market is extremely volatile.  Interest rates are very low.  Real Estate fell through the floor, in many areas.  You (not YOU specifically) are an investor who had $2 million a few years ago, and watched half of that evaporate.  All you ever had to show for it were some numbers on paper.  You are looking for things to invest in, and one thing that has been escalating in value pretty steadily are collectibles at the top of the market.  Loose Iron Man figures, not so much.  This year we are seeing record prices paid for stuff, because investors are looking to diversify their portfolios out of traditional investments.  Art is something that can be iffy, unless you are talking about the classics, and then you are playing with tens of millions, not tens of thousands.  There are rare coins and stamps and money.  Buy a stamp with an upside down plane on it and that's huge money... or a dollar bill with a mistake on it...  some put it in gold, but so many have that the price of gold is very high, and it's probably not a good time to do that either.  So you are an investor, looking to increase your wealth, but wary of traditional investments in this climate...  you had Mego figures as a kid, and you always liked them.  Prices on these carded ones have been escalating.  If you buy that, instead of shares of BP, you have something to look at that is meaningful to you, and hopefully things will even back out in a few years and you can sell it at a greater profit than you would if you bought stock or real estate or gold. 

As far as the card variations...  I've long held that carded toy collectors are often more card collectors than they are toy collectors.  The card and variations on it and it's perfect condition, etc...  those things are more relevant in the trading card world than the traditional toy collector market.  A carded toy is a card with a bonus item on it.

You're on the right rack,  I suspect. Leonardo Di Caprio is reportedly an avid Mego collector, and would have the change for this. The largest price I ever saw before this was for a boxed Jet Jaguar Mego. NO where near as close.

I used to have a carded Iron Man!  Not the very same one in this auction.  Mine didn't have that price sticker, and my card was a little rougher, though still nice.  I traded mine "back in the day" to Mark Huckabone for a boxed Remco Phantom and some other stuff.  At the time, it was a good trade.  This was when Remco Phantoms were going for $1,000 loose, and nobody but Mark cared about a carded Iron Man.  Now, of course, I'm kicking myself!  Somewhere, I have a photo of me holding my carded Iron Man, but I've dug around and haven't been able to find it.
