So, he looks like this?

I had heard that Rondo was a handsome or at least normal looking young man... then something happened while he served his country.  That pic is of a handsome young man.

What happened was that he developed Acromegaly, which causes your external  features (especially face, hands and feet) to grow out of proportion. Nothing to do with the military, though, just a pituitary gland problem.

I'd heard the war story too, but apparently it's not true.

From Wikipedia:

Because the symptoms developed in adulthood (as is common with the disorder), the disfigurement was incorrectly attributed later by film studio publicity departments to his exposure to a German mustard gas attack during service in World War I. Whether Hatton actually served in combat is unclear, though it has been reported that he served on the Mexican border and in France.

Yes.  I had just read that the acromegaly developed as a result of exposure to some toxin while in the military.  I have no way of confirming this.

Yes.  That was what I read.  It 'not being true' is no shock to me.  Thanks for clearing it up, MDG & Mike! :)

The resemblance between Wynona and Nancy is definately in the nose.  Maybe they are both nosey?

Nancy is simply Wynona without makeup, period.

No he looks a little more like the image that we all know, with enlarged features.

Ok..
1. As a Post Production facility-no cameras allowed
2. I barely (not even) know this guy. How does one ask to take a picture because "you like Rondo Hatton"  ;)
