Happy 110th Anniversary to David Manners, born on 29 April 1900.  Always a much better actor than he was given credit for, he will  be remembered for the thankless heroes he played in three iconic horror films.

The starchy Jonathan Harker in DRACULA, with Bela Lugosi
Kindly Frank Whemple in THE MUMMY...an archeologist falling in love with a girl with a "past"...
Wisecracking mystery writer Peter Allison in THE BLACK CAT.  Imagine being trapped in a crazy house on your wedding night, surrounded by satanists, with your bride sedated due to an injury, being menaced by Karloff AND Lugosi and keeping a sense of humour about it all.

Oh, David...are you ever missed....

I corresponded with David for about 20 years and enjoyed his sense of humor and his "philosophical musings" very much.  Yes, he is missed, and especially by this old fan!  The last note he wrote me, he must have been 98 or so!
Robert in Ohio

"I don't care what they do, so long as they don't do it in the streets and frighten the horses."   Mrs. Patrick Campbell

How very lucky you were, Robert.  He was truly wonderful.  I've had people who saw JOURNEY'S END, that have asked me who the"little boy" was who died at the end was.  They couldn't believe it when I told them that he was 29!

(But then, they also thought that Clive's  Stanhope, also 29, was about 40.)

THAT is acting!

I am the Female Dracula

He annoyed me no end in the Black Cat (though it might've been his wife more than him), but he was great in the Mummy! Made falling in love with a random girl in a day believeable.
