The Batman

Here's a new shot I took of Sparky this morning.
Eating bee pollen has made his feathers a bit brighter.
He is still a baby Pacific Parrotlet, until he becomes one yr old on 6/14.

Then we'll give him a birthday bagel!

His grandparents are trophy winning birds in Florida.
He is already talking much more than any other baby bird we've owned, far ahead in many ways
of even a 2yr old bird. We are so lucky to have him, as the breeder has finally retired from his bird hobbies.

Mmmmmm, Sparky looks delicious alright!

He'd be a gourmet treat for quite a few other beasts. After all, he's an exotic, spoiled birdie!  :D

How long does it take to train a bird that young to speak ?  Beautiful color.

If Carly is the one with her back to us .. she looks just like my much loved Kirby who died in 2001 at age 13 .. He was a big cat in many ways.

Yes that's Carly.  Here is a better shot, with her in one of her favorite resting places.

Teaching her to talk must be a labor of love.

I agree that she is quite the beauty .. How long is her expected life span?

CreepysFan ... Carley is almost a dead ringer for Kirby .. almost the same sweet expression.  Kirby was a head bumper, I was say 'Give me kepi' and he would bump his head into me.  I still miss him and his sister Daisy.

*'Kepi' is an Yiddish word for little head, it's something that you say to small child before you kiss them on the forehead.

'Reminds me of how my Aunt's Siamese cat would choose the same spot during the hot summer months. They just pour themselves into the bowl...and  r  e  l  a  x...

Some words and phrases take a month or two. But if Sparky likes the sound of the word or decides that the word means something fun or exciting it takes less time.

New word today is saying his name.
'Has learned the fart sound and makes that sound when he hears a lawn mower.
Says "pretty bird", "baby bird", "baby birdie" and "tickle tickle tickle"...
Starting to practice a few other words. May easily learn about 40 words or more...

It sounds kind of creepy to have a bird as smart as a dog or cat and hear him talking in a robot voice.

They may live 10 to 15 yrs currently and they used to live 20 to 30 yrs.
At first they were only green.

Then after much cross-breeding a very bright all yellow mutation was achieved.
Then an aqua blue mutation was achieved.
Then a very very light blue (almost pale white) color was achieved.

Breeders charge a higher price for the colors that are not green, but it has lowered their life span.

The most valuable parrots are those which cuss like sailors. You should start by teaching Sparky a wolf whistle and then train him to say "You're fat and ugly".

My friend had a cockatiel named Bird who was a very good talker, she also had a mini schnauzer named Bruno.  Bird would see Bruno and call out Bruno.

Bruno died and my friend got another mini schnauzer named Jessie.  Bird saw the dog and started to call our 'BRUNO' .. my friend thought that Bird was dumb, that he/she didn't know the difference .. I think that Bird was smart but 'thought' that 'Bruno' was the word for dog.

The bird was smart. It was your friend who was dumb.
