Part of me hopes it ends sooner . . . I could use the time off.

The kids in school are all scared of it.  I get asked about that a lot.  NO WAY is it going to happen.  A child told me why.  Because all the loans for houses and cars go on past 2012.  Now you don't think the banks and mortgage people are going to stand for a little thing as the end of the world?  I'd rather think about what I want on my pizza this evening.

Chatty: Funny you mention all the loans going past 2010.

That same issue was the best argument against the Y2K bug killing off all the computers. In the late 1960s the year 2000 problem with computers proved a non issue.  If the computers were going to reset at "year zero" they would not have been able to calculate 30 year mortgages after December 31, 1969.  And we all know our banks would never pass up a chance to make a buck.

All I can predict for 2012 is that a few Mayans may write the wrong date on their checks for a couple of days.

The only disaster will likely be Roland Emmerich inflicting another movie on us!

For those interested in such matters here are a couple of links showing some of the thousands of doomsday predictions over the last several thousand years.

This one is a fairly comprehensive list with sources.

I was enjoying the conversation in the thread until you said "pizza". I'm very easily distracted by pizza. What were we talking about again??

My understanding is that Mayan/Sumerian calendars mark 2012-ish as the end of a "cycle" and not some literal doomsday scenario.

I see the whole topic as fairly moot when you consider the fact that the Mayan/Sumerian races are long-since extinct. Kinda blows their "predicting the future" credibility out of the water IMO. Virtually every ancient religion has some sort of End Times myth . . . yet here we are.

Exactly. Barring a natural cause, like the sun going nova, the world won't end...unless we make it so.

The ultimate end of the human race will surely come eons before the actual "death" of the planet.

I mean, we as a race have only been scratching around on this ball for what 200,000 years? A mere blink of an eye in geological terms.

Bring on the new cycle.

When I was a kid, the belief most of us had was that the human race as well as the earth would end in a global thermonuclear exchange, in a matter of minutes.  There are all manner of doomsday scenarios, some of which include the destruction of the planet.  Many seem to think or wish that it will happen during their lifetime.  As brief a time as 200,000 years may be in the scheme of the lifetime of the planet, it is practically infinte given the brief lives we lead while on it, which are practically infinite compared to that of a mayfly, which may live anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours.  It may happen today, or it may happen a million years from now.  Odds of it happening today, or in our lifetimes are pretty long, although I'm sure Vegas would give you a really great deal if you wanted to place a bet on it.  :D

Well Scatter, my friend, the only intelligent thing to talk about in 2012 is pizza.
