Ultra rare soft rubber Freakies cereal figures
« on: September 26, 2009, 04:33:02 PM »
Here's something you should all enjoy, please tell me if I have the facts straight, and feel free to add your own info...I believe Freakies cereal came out around 1975-76, and the main appeal was the 1"-2" plastic toy figure inside.  You would dump the whole box into a big bowl or just dig around with your filthy hands till you found it.  Of course you would have to buy 12-18 boxes to get all 7 figures, since they were mostly Boss Moss or Goody Goody, OR, you could mail in two proofs of purchase and 35 cents to get a complete set.  Here is a complete set of the standard plastic figures, (a complete set of these on Ebay in good condition goes for $40-$80 depending on how many or how often they are listed.) In case you don't recall the names, they are, left to right, Hamhose, Cowmumble, Goody Goody, Boss Moss, Gargle, Grumble and Snorkledorf:  (to this day I still use the term Snorkledorf, but never referring to a plastic toy creature)

There was also a set of soft squishy rubber figures (similar to the material Deiner erasers of the same era) but I don't think these were ever available other than by mail order, and I do not recall the cost.  They only came in green and orange as you can see.  I had only one rubber figure as a kid, a Boss Moss that I won in a game of horse, and I remember a kid over at my house for dinner biting it in half.  I have only seen two complete sets of these on Ebay ever the first one maybe 6 years ago with missing arms and other damage sold for over $200, and this one I found as a buy it now in the middle of the night (don't ask), a few minutes after it was listed at $90, one of my greatest ebay scores ever, they are dead perfect, mint condition, amen.  I have only seen 3 individual rubber Freakies come up since, and I bought all of them, a Hamhose, a Gargle and a Cowmumble, so I have doubles of those, I think I paid around $30 each for them.  Please feel free to post any additional photos, memories, info or thoughts, I would certainly be interested to hear if anyone else knows of a complete set like this....

Yes, I've had some before and can tell you about their origin.

They were  offered on the first test box.

If you send in 2 proofs of purchase, they would send you a poster.  If you send in 3 proofs of purchase and 35¢, they sent you a poster and a set of green and orange rubber Freakies.

Indeed they are pretty rare, since it took 3 proofs and money to get them.  The poster is rare enough by itself.  Finding a full set of them is not so uncommon when you find them at all, because they were distributed in sets.

Tim K was a friend of mine when I lived in Tucson, and he was the foremost Freakies collector around.  He had most of the boxes, all of the premiums.  I found him a couple of things he didn't have.  I've lost track of Tim, but he's a good dude and I'd like to get in touch with him again.

Ever seen the mini figures ;D

OK wow, this is exactly why we do this, to learn history on this stuff.  Now, I have seen the following Freakies toys/premiums: obviously the figures we are discussing, magnets, cars, boats, flip n flyers, clocks, watches, iron on patches and shirt decals, a bowl,...what else, thats all I can think of right now, but I can't for the life of me think what the "mini figures" are...please share, I can't stand it.  And PLEASE post a photo!

BTW, there is one main freakies seller/collector on ebay but i think its a girl.  Also, about a year ago there was someone selling off original "cel" artwork of all of the original Freakies boxes, ads, posters etc, as their dad who had just died was the artist.  I was not into it enough to bid, but I recall a few of the original peices going fairly cheap, some items under $100 if I recall.  I think that poster artwork might have been in there?  Does anyone remember this, or know where the artwork ended up?

The 7 mini figures were made of brittle plastic and the tallest one is 1 1/4".  They are green and orange like the rubber ones.  Goody Goody, Hamhose, and Grumble are green, the rest are orange.  They are exceedingly rare.

There are rings of 3 characters.  Boss, Snork, and Hamhose.  These are hard plastic medallion type with raised letters and features that are painted.

There are 4 mini comics

There's a set of magnets, but then there's also a set of mini magnets.  The mini's are 1 1/4" tall at most.

The rectangle iron on patches are common enough, but there are also 3 circular iron on patches.

Fun Dots are plastic buttons with stickum on the back.

There is a Hamhose Good Friends Medallion that was the only Cocoa Freakies prize and is very rare.

Sayings Magnets are kinda like the Fun Dots, but are magnetic, if I remember correctly.

Of course the cars and boats.

There are cut out airplanes from box backs.

There's a Goody Goody figure with a fruit hat, which is different from the regular Goody Goody

(I'm cheating by the way, I pulled out an old copy of Freakie Magnet zine ;D )

Flip & Flys...  these are little discs with a tab that you use to shoot them across the room and characters on them.

Sew on patches...  there are some loose ones like the ones on the caps.

Wall Clock

T-shirts and Sweatshirts and Knit Caps

Fruity Freakies Mug and Bowl Set

Bike Flags

And... boxes.

I had those, but sold them long ago before Ebay came along.  Including the poster.

Thanks for bringing back some memories.

Man I loved Freakies cereal.  I have Hamhose and Sorkledorf plastic figures and used to have the Goody Goody magnet.  I used to have iron on patches of Snorkledorf, Gargle, and Goody Goody also.  I sure would like to get a set of all the plastic figures!

According to www.freakies.com, they were created in 1971 and ran until 1977. I have a set of the standard hard plastic figures. I was one of the kids in 1973 who sent off for the mail order set because I was tired of always getting dumb ol' Goody Goody in the cereal boxes ;) At various times I've had the plastic race cars, the magnets, and probably the boats too, but the regular figures are the only Freakies items I still own.

That mini box magnet is cool.  There is a carded set of mini foods out there that has  mini plastic cans of green beans and corn, and then 3 boxes of cereal, including a mini box of Freakies

The cars were found in huge quantities old stock, so they are easily the most common Freakies item around.  That said, $3.25 is basically free cars and shipping paid, which can't be beat.  Congrats!
