Bobby, that Gargantua story is a sad one indeed. Cool collectible you have there.

The St. Louis Zoo had "Phil the Gorilla."  I remember the gift shop had jigglers and other merchandise they were marketing with his name.  I think my translucent brown/amber gorilla is the same one they were selling as "Phil."

It seems Phil died long before I was born.  I don't remember actually seeing Phil, and this explains why.  I vaguely remember seeing Phil stuffed and mounted.  They were still capitalizing on his legend in the 1970s, 15-20 years after his death.

This is not mine, nor is it a Gorilla, but I thought it was still cool looking

My favorite place to buy monster rubber toys was at the Shriner Circus... I can still smell the gift shop ... the scent of rubber elephant dung ,and cotton candy brings a tear to my eye !   I still have a Mummy i bought and a Godzilla.  The big one at the top of the topic is huge ! I think the biggest I have ever seen .

The Gargantua is awesome.  I got him at a flea market this summer and had a tough time placing him.  Thanks for the help.

Cool thread.

Anyone know anything about this guy?

Dave,  thanks for posting those photos , and dragging me over here. Cool thread, guys. I was having a hard time digging those pics up again, and when I saw this thread, I was bummed I couldn't post. haha

I shoulda'  squished the giant gorilla in that shop to see how much rubber content he had!

I know squat about him, except that I wish he was in my collection!  But $1,600 is an awful lot of cash.  I could see half that, maybe.  He looks like he's in an antique mall space.  Is he something you've been eyeing for awhile?

First off, Jon, thanks again for stopping by and I hope you don't mind me stealing your pics. ;) I'd sort of forgotten about it until this thread picked up.

And Ray, no, I've got no real interest in it. Just thought it was unusual and, although it's obviously not in the jiggler family, thought it was worth mentioning. Jon actually took the pictures and can probably tell you more about where he did.

I suppose this is as good a time as any to post a few shockingly SMALL rubber gorillas!  Anyone got any smaller than these?  (BTW these are both squishy rubber.)  Now, I don't mean to throw my rubber gorilla collecting weight around but I think I am winning both the hugest and smallest categories.  I would love to see any contenders, and just to keep things interesting, I think the next category should be "weirdest rubber gorilla."

I wonder where the idea of a gorilla with one arm raised over its head originated?  It's not a pose characteristic of any real gorilla.  King Kong never did it.  Where did it come from?  How did it become the standard pose for rubber gorillas?
