I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

I watched the original True Grit last night. This was the first time I had seen it, although I have seen the sequel, Rooster Cogburn, a couple of times.  It was enjoyable fare. Wayne was in fine form and the story was engaging. It was fun seeing so many well known actors in small roles, like Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Strother Martin, and Jeff Corey. Glen Campbell seemed miscast but I suppose he was popular at the time. Have yet to see the new version.

I haven't seen the new version either.  However, I still don't plan to go (maybe I'll rent it) because by seeing the previews, it just doesn't seem to measure up!!  >:(  I say that in full understanding that the original version is not my favorite "Duke" movie.  :o  It always seemed rather choppy in the delivery of dialogue, that goes for all the actors involved. :'(  I never could understand how Wayne recieved an Oscar for the roll! thrhrt

In 1969, John Wayne was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar along with Richard Burton (Anne of the Thousand Days), Dustin Hoffman & John Voight, (both for Midnight Cowboy) and Peter O'Toole (Goodbye, Mr. Chips).  He had been nominated only once before (1949 for Sands of Iwo Jima).  It was his ONLY Oscar.
He had also been nominated for a Best Producer Oscar for The Alamo (1960)
I always suspected the True Grit Oscar was more of a lifetime achievement award and a reaction to all the nominations for Midnight Cowboy, the only X-Rated movie to win an Academy Award.

BTW, Almost everyone under 40 that I work with were shocked and not pleasantly surprised to find out it was a remake.

Rio Bravo with John Wayne (thank you A.M.C.).  8)  Another Howard Hawk western highlighting Hawk's Triumphant return to Hollywood  ;D after years of self imposed exile and self doubt!  :o  thrhrt

I believe that "The Shootest" was Wayne's best "Western" ever.  I say western because it was set in the west at the turn of the 19th century.  More of a "character" piece than anything else.  We learn how terrific an actor Wayne was.  Telling more of his thoughts and feelings with an upturned eye or a sidelong glance than with all the shoot'em up, Bang Bang's in all his other movies.
Very poignant considering that he was playing a coyboy, dieing of cancer while he was himself dieing of cancer.  I don't believe he lived long enough to see the movie hit the theaters!

I AM!!! I have my James Bond 4" parabolic broadband-stealing dish pointed at the unsuspecting house across the canal from me right now, and am killing the creeping hours until 11:30PM when I can watch a video on the dashboard of my car during the 25 minute ride home.
