Flying Scissors - best damn mockumentary based on the sport of Rock, Paper, Scissors I've ever seen.

As some of you know, my wife and I take in the Best Picture Nominees each year.  Though ten films in a month seemed like a bit too much, I got them in.  Here are my ratings for the Academy Award Nominees for Best Picture, starting with my least favorite.:

10. Inglourious Basterds (Is their something clever that I am missing about misspelling a title of a movie that you cannot even say at the dinner table?)- More self-indulgent over the top violence from Tarantino.  Yawn.  He really needs to go away at this point.

9. Avatar- Weak story, weak acting, and the effects were over-hyped.  Hopefully the Academy will not reward Cameron for this pattern of behavior.  The only reason I put the movie Up ahead of it is because at least the later had 20 decent minutes.

8. Up- 20 minutes of charm followed by Pixar formula which is getting old with a new splash of "Hey, here's a great idea, lets put it in, but never explain how it came about."  (See dog collar that gave dogs the ability to talk.)

7. District 9- At least it tried to be different.  Had a Mad Max feel to it, but this type of approach is better left for, well, Mad Max.  However, the exploding bodies did me in.

6. A Serious Man- Still not sure if I enjoyed it, but did not dislike it.

5. The Blind Side- Better than expected, but does not belong in an academy award list, as neither do any of the ones above.

4. The Hurt Locker- Interesting premise, but really lost its way about two thirds through in my opinion and the ending I believe was weak.

3. An Education- Enjoyed this one as well.  Good acting and a story I enjoyed watching unfold.  The early '60's setting in England was also a highlight as well and it was nice to see a film that did not reward infidelity.

2. Up in the Air- Interesting backdrop.  Enjoyed this one.  Clooney being Clooney, which is exactly what I wanted to see.

1. Precious- Brutal and depressing, but very well done on all accounts.  The performances of Mo'Nique, as the mom, and Mariah Carrey (yes, the same), as Mrs. Weiss the social worker, were simply incredible.  I usually loathe movies that involve teachers, as they either turn out to be unbelievable, or make excellent teachers look inadequate.  This film, refreshingly, did neither.

Ditto
I am a fan of these guys but prefer the Little Tough Guys/Dead End Kids/East side Kids eras. Many of the BB movies are pretty lame and IMO this one while it had it's moments was pretty bad. Would not want it in my collection. TCM is having a BB movie every Saturday morning this month.

Yeh...it wasnt that great... not like "Spooks run wild" or "Ghosts on the loose" or "Angels with dirty faces"

just got thru watching "Forbidden Kingdom" with Chan and Li....I was a little disappointed in the movie..
I hope Chan and Li make another action movie together...

I saw the trailer for "Karate Kid" with Chan and Wil Smith's son,Jaden....it looks like a winner to me .

That was a good one,and I believe we were measnt to root for him, vile as his actions became.

I HOPE THEY SERVE BEER IN HELL - Not as funny as I'd hoped, can't say I'd recommend it to anyone.

INKHEART - Maybe too family-friendly and predictable for my taste, but still worth rewatching

OLD DOGS - If you liked WILD HOGS, watch that one again and skip OLD DOGS entirely.  It misuses Robin and gives too much of the spotlight to John.
