I rarely watch the tv news, but I walked right in on the footage of those beautiful "wild" creatures that had to be put down today in Zanesville, Ohio.  I almost posted this on the Cemetary Wall, but it seemed inappropriate.  I just felt so sickened and sad by the sight of those Bengel tigers and lions lying on the ground in an Ohio USA,  "sanctuary". I am not an animal expert, but I just know that it looked "wrong" when I saw the aftermath of the ordeal. I feel like we lost some amazing creatures, and there was nothing anyone could do to change the outcome of the day.  I am pretty ignorant about laws and permits concerning wild animal sanctuaries. And I know in my heart that the person that owned this place probably had the animals' best interests in mind.  (I hope).  Anyway, I just feel a sense of loss and I wonder how these animals came to be in that place. The police and animal control had NO choice, they had to protect us humans, but I feel almost guilty about that. R.I.P.- Beautiful animals of the Earth

I think the guy that owned them was a nutjob (clinical term) that released the animals and then shot himself due to the debt he accrued from keeping the animals.

Seeing all those beautiful animals killed is just terrible, but I don't see that the sheriff had any other options. At least a few animals were recaptured. But they needed to be put down quickly before they could harm anyone. I place the blame for their deaths squarely on the nutjob (as Twilitezoner put it) who kept them and released them.

You would think that there were already strong laws on record that prohibited individuals from amassing their own personal zoos. Last year here in Atlanta there was a wild "cat" that had gotten loose from someone and the Police said point blank that when/if they find out who's cat it was they were in serious trouble because it was against the current laws to have such a "pet".

OCCUPY WALL STREET-some people see this as a bunch of unemployables sitting around Wall Street b/c they have nothing better to do than spout out-dated and disgraced left-wing ideology. Others see them as a rising alternative to the "Tea Party" movement, urging more government regulation of the private sector (especially the financial services sector) , rather than less, as the Tea Party tends to advocate.

Personally, I see this as an effort to change the ideology around the aquisition and redistribution of wealth. My opinion is that the ethics of aquisition up to now can be summarized by "more is better". The idea is that a person or company may, in an honest, open free-market system, work as hard as they wish and, based on their hard work and talents, aquire as much wealth as they are able, and dispense with it as they see fit. No person or organization has a right to speak to how that person/ organization chooses to handle it's wealth, whether it decides to give it all away, keep it or bury it in a hole in the ground....it's up to the person/ gruop who made that wealth to decide.

I personally think this is a wonderful abstract idea, just as many idealized economic and social systems are. Unfortunately, it has led to the current situation where banks and private companies are actually sitting on large caches of wealth, but are reluctant to spend it for fear of how they may be affected in the future. It's as if your neighborhood was destroyed in a natural disaster, a tornado or earthquake or something. Your supplies are lost in the disaster, but the guy next to you has managed to store a year's supply of food, water, and means to make shelter. Since he owns those supplies, he is under no obligation to share them, and shouldn't be expected to share them with others. But should he? Should the ethics of wealth aquisition include aknowledgement of a responsibility to look after others in times of hardship?

As unfocused as the "occupy" movement may be, i think this is at the core of what they are looking to change, and personally I think many people support this idea.

Just my thoughts-what are yours?
Supernatural, perhaps; baloney, perhaps not.

It says a lot that both David Duke and Farrakin support the "occupy" crowd.  Since politics aren't allowed here, I don't know how you can even have a discussion on this subject without bringing politics into it.  Unless you want to have a discussion about the effects of large numbers of people not bathing in a concentrated area, and how it affects the local environment.

Maybe if the teen is planning to watch sparkling Vampires, to avoid trouble with the law, drink sparkling apple cider instead.

I'll Take the Pneumonia, Thanks...

An Indian man who died in a state-run hospital is alleged to have had his penis chewed off by rats, Asian Age newspaper reports.

Arun Sandhukha, 53, had been a pneumonia patient at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) since December 11. According to the newspaper, his family members arrived at the hospital for a visit and found him in a pool of blood, with no medical staff in sight.

"No nurse was found at the scene and he was writhing in pain. His penis had been nibbled by rats," a victim's relative identified as Bishwanath said. The relative said that hospital staff "admitted the presence of rats in the hospital."

Later in the day, Sandhukha was pronounced dead. (Asian Age published its story on December 24, but it is not clear on what day the incident occurred.)

The horrific story is only the latest in a string of medical mishaps to capture the Indian public's attention. On December 23, a government doctor was found to be practicing medicine while inebriated, reports The Statesman.

In a more serious case, a drunk medical worker "was reported to have pulled off the oxygen mask of a three-week old baby that led to her death," reports the Malaysian National News Agency Bernama.

And in a tragedy that made international headlines, 89 people were killed when a fire swept through a Kolkata hospital on December 9. Medical staff abandoned patients as the blaze spread, and six administrators were charged with culpable homicide.

Oh man - what a way to start the new year!  Horrible!  And yes, I'll take the pneumonia, too.
