I'd like to get those 80s UniMonster glasses.  I don't think I've even seen one in person.  Just on ebay.

There's also a set of crypto monster "big gulp" cups that 7-Eleven put out in the late 70s, if I have my timeframe correct.  Again, I've only seen these online.  There was a Yeti, Nessie, and so on.  I'm not sure how many are in the set.  I'd buy the whole set at one time if someone was in the mood to sell them.  It would probably take forever to try to build the set one cup at a time.

Ray,

Just read your comment.
See this thread I started for the 7-11 cups.

Thanks for reminding me about that thread.  I had forgotten about it.  I remember the set had a Yeti and a Nessie.  I'd be happy just to get those two.  Any additional ones would be icing on the cake.

I know--Necropost. Now that that's acknowledged and outta the way: a question. Are we sure the 1980's Spencer's glasses included a Mummy? My mom had a set of these when I was 10...and I only remember there being 5 glasses. Is there a Mummy? If so---anyone here own one? I am currently harvesting images for items I want to eventually add to my collection one day, and these glasses are on the long term list. So if a Mummy exists, i would like to see it.

I would love to make these for Monster Cafe someday.

Me too, but I really don't think one was ever made. No collector I know has one, and I've never heard of anyone who's seen one save for the childhood recollection previously in this thread. While one (and only one) of the numerous books on character glasses listed it, there was no picture and I honestly think it was listed as a copyright trap (it used to be common practice for price guides to list one or two fictional items of obscure interest as a way to prove their research had been copied by others). I'd love it if one did exist but the odds very low.

I can't find a pic of one either, but I thought I had one with him standing in some fog.  I swear I had it but maybe I am nuts, but I can picture it in my head and it is so clear.
Long live the UMA!

How were the Anchor-Hocking glasses distributed/sold? I only became aware of them just over fifteen years ago when I bought a couple of price guides devoted to character glasses.

Ive often had a foggy childhood memory of something only to discover it was different. It happens. For instance I was convinced I saw a movie one time about a mud monster that was made of salt that I saw at a drive in. Then my mother corrected me and told me I saw it at home with her on late nite t.v and it was a made for t.v. thing. then I posted about it in a forum and it turns out it was a pilot for a t.v. series. It happens.

But I distinctly remember buying these glasses with my mom and her saying "5 glasses is an awfully odd number for a set of glasses--are you sure there isnt a 6th one?" and the clerk  telling her no---only 5 and giving her the "whatever, lady" smirk.

So I take it they were sold in stores as sets. Where did you buy them? What year would this have been?

They were 1960s gas station giveaways, so it has been said. Makes sense, as they have the appearance of that type of glass. Gas giveaways were very common in the 60s...i still remember signs on vacation that would say FREE GLASSES by the side of the road. Esso, Sinclair, and Gulf stations were especially good for freebies with gas purchase- glasses, magazines (Gulf used to give away a Disney magazine), little model cars and toys, moon landing and President coins and glasses and pitchers, etc. I always tried to get the old man to fill up at the stations advertising freebies. The monster glasses seem to have come from the Midwest mainly, as loose glasses and an occasional case of glasses always seem to pop out of the Midwest.

Cool! I like gas station giveaways!

Quote from: Monster Bob on June 18, 2009, 12:44:16 PMThe nice thing about the glasses is, they are probably the easiest-sell vintage monster item that there is, next to Soaky bottles, so don't be afraid to pay for them, as you'll get your $ back out when you want to.

You really think the glasses and Soaky bottles generate more action/excitement than the SPP monster wallets?

I think so because both are more broadly affordable than the wallets.   But the artwork etc.. of the wallets IMO are cooler.
