Thanks muchly, Mike, Robert, Bobby, & Rob.
My Uncle Denny was, like all of us, not perfect - but a cool guy in lots of ways. He was a very blue-collar kind of man - but picked up a copy of THE GREAT MOVIE STARS/THE GOLDEN YEARS for me long ago at a car parts swap meet (!), just because he thought I'd enjoy it. It's on my bookshelf now.
As far as being "sensitive":
Some folks I've known over the years have thrown the "oh, you're just oversensitive, Craig!" charge at me. And being a Midwestern Protestant, I used to deny it...
I don't anymore.
It finally dawned on me that to stand in front of hundreds of strangers and cry your eyes out because "your great love" is leaving, or go into a blue rage at mic because your "father" spurned you (and both of these partners in the scene are really neither!), REQUIRES what "normal" folks might label with that word.
"What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba, that he should weep for her?"
And maybe, just maybe, as Chatty touches upon, some "normal" people are actually a bit UNDERsensitive?

Craig, I too am sorry for your loss.
My feeling for the actors, directors, technicians of the movies we love who are no longer with us is not so much one of longing for them to still be around, but more one that I wish they had been around long enough to see the huge numbers of people who appreciate the work they did. To see Bela Lugosi walking into his first convention and greeted like royalty by thousands of admirers would have been a sight well worth seeing, or Paul Blaisdell, Jack Pierce, or anyone else for that matter.

John,
It's good to hear from you. It's been a while. Hope you find time to pop in more often.

John, that is a very good point. I have often thought about Bela in that light.
And maybe even moreso, George Reeves. He loved kids, but was once heard to say, "if only an ADULT would come up to me to say 'good job'..."

I too have a special love for Bela, and a special sense of regret for so much wasted talent. But I had never thought of him walking into a Horror Convention to bask in his deserved adulation before you brought it up here.
A very nice thought indeed.

My condolences, Craig. As you are a friend I've talked to often but have never met, I regret too that I cannot offer my condolences as someone who has spent face time with you. I don't know why that seems worse, but it does.
John, good to see here again!
I'm like Scatter. I can celebrate what is left in terms of memories and a legacy, but I think grieving a loss well after someone has passed CAN BE (but isn't always) a
healthy
thing. It's what you do with that grief. You use it; you don't let it get in your way. And grief can remind you how deep your feelings are, a reminder of your humanity.
I remember going into a Kmart in 1990, and seeing a wall of TVs where Boris Karloff was on, in closeup! He was very old, but it was in color; for a brief moment it was as if he were on a new show, talking about his past. I was, for a second, puzzled and ecstatic, but had a lump in my throat. I figured out that I was seeing, for the first time, a scene from TARGETS.
Wouldn't trade that moment for anything, except to have Boris back.

Rob, Craig, Max
Thanks for the welcome back. It has been a while. I wasn't even sure my key would still work when I got here. Many things have taken over my time and kept me away. I'd periodically drop by, but spent most of my time trying to catch up on what I missed before I posted anything. This time I decided to just jump back in. I don't know how frequently I'll be back, but it will be more often than it has been.

Thanks, Mr. Max (and 'hi' to Ms. Jane - no, not Hathaway!)
