YEah! George is the "Patron Saint" of Topstones!  He rescued most of the original masters that are making masks today.  Us Topstoners have George to thank for continuing the Topstone legacy.  It's a pretty interesting story...and the pictures will blow your mind!

I'm a regular on http://www.thehma.net

The Halloween Mask Association board has been going since 1998 and is the top mask collector site out there.  Andy, Doc Terror, and I have been members for almost a year now, and Raymond joined a couple of months ago and Monster Bob joined up recently too.  Several of the HMA folks we've met there have joined us here at the UMA (HMA/UMA...  it's a funny coincidence just worked out that way), but if you are really into masks, that's the place...

I see the good in both the old and new masks. I would like to start adding both to my collection. I really love that old Ghoul that Ray has but those new ones are just amazing looking. They are what you wanted as a kid. Those are what I would want to have on display mostly.

So does anyone have the UBANGI and others that I asked about at the start of this thread?

Thanks for sharing guys!!

And I'll go join up on thehma...

Aaaahhh Topstones, now this is a topic that I never get sick of talking about.  Topstones were THE mask of the monster kids in the '60s. They may have drooled over the $39.99 Don Post masks, but mom and dad would never shell out that kind of scratch, so what did they get?  A $1.99 Topstone of course.  When I first started collecting masks it was with the intent of getting the Calendar re-issues but within a short time I became disinterested with the reissues (rather have vintage/rare DP but thats another story) and shifted my focus to Topstones.  Topstones sedduced me with their charm.  They are AMAZING masks, everything that I love about masks is summed up in the Topstones. And they still retain their magic today. My 7 year old son LOVES the Shock Monster and wears it in photos and trys to scare people when they come over.  If I may, might I direct your attention to the HMA's World Famous Topstone thread (now over 20 pages long!!) for your reading pleasure (and while your there why not join the forum, you'll see plenty of familiar faces).

In answer to the orignal question, I have never seen the masks that you asked about at the beginning of this thread.  If I ever get the chance however I'd love to pick them up.  I am ALWAYS interested in getting a new Topstone to add to my collection.

By the way, whats up Kolchak good to see you here.

I'm going to inflict a hailstorm of vintage Topstones on this thread.  Get out your umbrellas or run to the nearest shelter.  Here it comes...

My sister had the Hag mask, and I owned this Wolf mask around Halloween 1979 or so. They're long dead, sad to say. What do those two go for these days? We probably paid well south of $5.00 for ours back in the day.

Those are very, very cool Ray.  Thanks.  Is that Vampire Girl a very late one, or were the paint jobs just catch as catch can?

I believe the Vampire Girl is an 80s specimen.  But here we have a 60s example:

The seller claimed to be the original owner and said this mask was purchased in the 60s.  You can see that there is not much difference between the 80s one from my earlier post and this older specimen, except that the younger mask is in better condition.

That amazes me.  I remember the Post masks form several different magic shops I was fortunate enough to visit as a child, and from the gift shop in Six Flags over Georgia and the two beach based Castle Draculas - Panama City and Myrtle - but I'm pretty sure I never saw more than a handful of the Topstone masks in those stores.  Perhaps the shops were too high end?  Anyway, that the Vampire Girl differs so significantly from the illo is very interesting.  The Lagoon Monster is first on my list, but she's next...

Vintage Topstones are very hard to find, but also very cheap.  Most can be purchased for $15-$35.  The Wolf is probably a $15-$20 mask.  The Hag, if properly listed, could probably fetch $35-$50.  That's still awfully cheap considering how rare and cool she is.

It's cool for collectors like me to be able to pick up these treasures for so little money.  But it's maddening for the seller to see a rare, vintage, iconic piece sell for pocket change.  I hope prices stay down long enough for me to build a nice collection of all the key characters, but I also hope that eventually more collectors come to appreciate these things.

My top priorities now are Teenage Werewolf, Melting Face, Mummy and Lagoon Monster.  Especially Teenage Werewolf.  That mask was one of my favorite childhood toys.  I was always running around the neighborhood with that mask.  When I saw the movie Twisted Brain, I taped the Werewolf mask over Charlie McCarthy's head to turn him into a "twisted brain monster."

Technically yours is not a true 'Shock Monster' as it is a much later resculpt.
