QuoteIn what would mark the first film he would potentially direct since merging his Atomic Monster banner with Blumhouse, Deadline has learned James Wan is in early talks to potentially direct The Creature from the Black Lagoon for Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures.Wan is developing a grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic.

Wan is a producer will produce under the Atomic Monster banner with Atomic Monster's Michael Clear and Judson Scott exec producing. Executive Vice President of Production Development Jay Polidoro will oversee for Universal.

Hollywood Reporter also did their own update on this project. It's moving forward but what will they do to the Creatures design?

They're going to "modernize" it, of course!

I've been hoping for a remake for years.  Strangely, every attempt failed, and from hearing about the storylines they came up with, I can see why.  The original worked on all points.  They have a tendency to change it.  Yes, it would be cool to see a Creature film with vibrant color, a wonderful score, great sound effects (imagine all those jungle sounds actually surrounding you), beautiful underwater photography, modern 3D, and a creature design looking like the original, but perhaps a bit more bad-ass.  But sadly, they will likely change everything and make it a mess.

Case in point - King Kong.  The 1976 remake was pretty bad.  The live locations looked great, had a beautiful score, color, etc, but then the Kong scenes looked like a guy in a gorilla suit on a pretty crappy set that looked nothing like the live action scenes.

I thought the Peter Jackson film would be great since he was a huge fan of the original, but it too was terrible.  He added so much crap to it, characters who added nothing to the storyline, characters I cared nothing for, and then just were killed off.  Too many CGI effects that looked terrible.  Even the actors weren't that good in the film.

Maybe producers should just leave well enough alone and come up with new, original films.

What a novel idea! Unfortunately, Hollywood only wants sequels and remakes. :P
