How long ago did they make the UMs?

edit: Looks like May of '23. Haven't seen any for sale anywhere.

The ones I'm talking about (referenced in the magazine) are the "Monster Fighters" sets and they are probably 10 years old or so. This is a link to the "Swamp Creature" set on Amazon. This particular set is tiny compared to the others and probably one of the weaker sets in my opinion.

"Offended"? That's the wrong mindset. Nobody's offended. But the idea here is to actually entice people to buy the magazine. And it's failing with too many of us vintage toy enthusiasts here on this board. Personally speaking I could well be intrigued by a Universal monster themed Lego set. But the figure on the cover doesn't shout Lego to me. It just looks like some kind of a variant of the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Moreover if the idea is to connect with younger Lego enthusiasts, how recognizable is that single piece to a cross section of the kids who've built things with Legos sets? Like I say, the piece by itself doesn't shout "Hey, Lego!"

:-\

I would rather not engage in a debate but the figure on the cover of that magazine would be recognizable by hundreds of millions of people world wide (not an exaggeration) as a LEGO mini fig. There are several very popular LEGO movies entirely based on such figures and I would be stunned if that exact figure isn't featured in at least 1 of those movies and probably more.

If LEGO's aren't your thing, AWESOME! They sure as heck aren't mine. But it is sometimes queried on this board where all the regular posters have gone. It's awfully dead here sometimes. Might I offer for your consideration that when a member returns to this board after a long absence to post about a something that member has created we not repeatedly whine and complain about the cover design of the thing this person created at their own expense and using their own talents. It's poor form and it's the type of thing that causes people to lose interest in participating here. This is my last entry in this discussion.

These are the ones I was wondering about.

Actually I think LEGOs are mega cool! I've bought a number of LEGO buckets and LEGO boxed sets as Xmas presents for Salvation Army kids over the last 30+ years.

Huh?! "Whining and complaining"? Once again you're overreacting. The comments in this thread are constructive criticism! Rather than him having to pay some special targetted focus group, we're making reasonable suggestions for free. I'm assuming he should value our input. Otherwise he would not have posted here.

And "the type of thing that causes people to lose interest in participating here" is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, etc. Facebook and the others have been discussion forum killers for the last dozen years. And no, I don't have any solutions other than encouraging people to say something. Posting begets more posting.

Lego has never released any Universal Monsters mini-figures, only the Frankenstein's Monster BrickHeadz figure. What you're looking at is a fan creation on the Ideas website. If it gets the support of 10,000 fans, Lego will attempt to license and release it.

While not part of any regular LEGO boxed set, the Frankenstein figure actually does seem to be a LEGO Minifigure:

I didn't even know that LEGO had a collectible figure sideline.

The first issue of Monster Kid Magazine and just trying to let people know. First issue features the Mego Mad Monsters, Shrimpenstein, the Great Garloo, Lego Mini Monster figs and more

https://monsterkidmagazine.bigcartel.com

This magazine came in the mail today. I has the package come addressed to my kid. He read it through 3 times before I got home and he's going through it again right now.He noticed a reference to some additional things being discussed in the next issue of the magazine. For his sake, I really home there is a next issue. As soon as I got home he ran up to me asking if I knew what MEGO figures are. Big thumbs up from him (and me).

What's been your son's previous experience with Universal monsters or LEGO?

Quote from: fearliath on January 05, 2024, 09:02:33 PMIn the regular format mini figs they don't make licensed versions. But they did make several (now VERY expensive) sets featuring classic monsters and their castle/environment of varying sizes. They are the only legos I've ever tolerated in my home.

Huh?! Why your antipathy to LEGO?

LEGO Frankenstein Minifigures Video

I'm wondering now whether the Frankenstein figure selected for the cover of this magazine may have been Monsterfink's own design. The figure does bear a certain stylistic resemblance to what I remember of Monsterfink's artwork which has somehow now all disappeared from this board.

The artwork disappeared as it was a painful reminder of life before carpal tunnel and crippling arthritis of my hands removed my ability to continue to create.

Monsterfink - will you be making further issues of Monsterkid magazine?

Monsterfink

Yep, issue 2 is at the printer with 3 close to follow. I'm working on issue 4 right now.

So Monster Kid Magazine does not ship to Canada. Oh well....
