Netflix is shutting down its physical DVD rental service on September 29.

The company announced that it will allow customers to keep any unreturned discs.

Customers can also enter a chance to get up to 10 extra discs with no charge.

Lol, I didn't even know they still did physical rental.  I thought that stopped years ago.
I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity...

I know an 85-year-old that still uses it.

He buys a lot of blank DVD's.

I just don't understand why so many people are willing to entrust their "property" to be held somewhere/somehow in the form of 0s and 1s by a third party. A DVD is yours permanently (barring confiscation by the fascist State of course) but those other things are ephemeral.

And now Best Buy, in store and online in 2024. Not liking this trend.  Glad I have most of the films and shows I want.  They're really trying to push owning films online, which stinks.  If DVDs and Blu-rays, etc ever stop being manufactured, I hope they at least make films available to download to computers. Popping a thumb drive into today's TVs is easy.

It's like owning a puff of smoke.

I guess you should watch Best Buy for sales on DVD's in the near future.

If they are gonna cease selling DVD's, they will want to clear out their old stock to make room for - what?  What are they going to fill up all that empty space with?  (Whatever it is, I hope it doesn't sell.)

I did read an article the other day predicting DVD's will be a thing of the past.  I want a physical copy of my fav movies and shows.  I don't want to subscribe to several streaming sites to watch media only to have them switch off what I enjoy.

I do believe the next generation of video game consoles will be all digital download.  The days of video game disks will be over soon.

Precisely! Anyone with the collecting gene wants physical.

You're not just at the mercy of them switching off whatever. They could also not so subtly bowdlerize originals in response to the changing vicissitudes of political correctness. It's already happening.

Books are going the way of clay tablets.  Soon everything will be digital downloads, Kindle literature or audio books.

Lengthy letters are a thing of the past.  Today kids send short messages over "social media".  The messages are so limited that abbreviations and emojis are used extensively.  They are even used in everyday speech - LOL.

Everyone's handwriting looks like a doctor's prescription.

I learned to use my local library by using card files.  As an adult, the first time I visited a library and had to ask the librarian where their card file was and was pointed to a computer, I turned around and walked out.  I had no idea how to use the damned thing.  I still miss those massive maple cabinets with l-o-n-g drawers.

(Forgive me.  I turned 77 on the 16th.)

Happy Birthday Monsters For Sale !  Hope you enjoyed your special day! 🥳🎁🎉

I understand the desire to purchase the physical product vs. the digital one.  I prefer to have Blu Rays or DVDs of my favorite movies or TV shows.

I'm at an age where I used the card catalog at the beginning of school and the internet towards the end.

While I appreciate the ease and accessibility that the internet can provide and the ways it improves our lives in some ways, I still like to be able to physically touch & see my favorites in person.

Cheers to options though!  There are benefits on both sides and it's awesome to see our favorites like classic monster movies live on for the next generations!
