No thanks. I don't need to see another Nicolas Cage movie. 🤮

I'd really, REALLY love for this NOT to suck. Gonna check it out with low expectations since Universal has botched this kind of thing before.

Honestly, I'd much prefer a genuine sequel/spinoff to Dracula with someone continuing the Dwight Frye version of the character.

More throw backs to 1931. This actually does look like the way to introduce the Universal Dracula to a new generation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnBJGs3fyMQ

Reviews are coming and they are good. They even appreciate the use of the scenes from the '31 Dracula.

I saw it Saturday! Had an absolute Blast! Ppplus, the last trailer was for last Voyage of the Demeter.

I enjoyed it. It's fairly clever, and Hoult and Awkafina are very likeable in their roles. Cage is at his eccentric, over-the-top best, and is good at evoking Lugosi without apeing him in anyway, adding his own level of dementia to the character. But it works, because Dracula has endured several decades since we last saw him, and it seems to have taken its toll. The movie follows it's own rules pretty well, even if it ignores some typical vampire mythos, and makes up it's own. I'd definitely watch it again, and perhaps a sequel if the story was good. it was a fun time at the movies, for sure!

My theater also showed a trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter. For a brief second, I thought it was a part of this movie! Also from Universal!

I thought it was fine.  They appropriately leave room for a sequel.

I enjoyed it. I had a few gripes, but mostly I had a good time. It had the appropriate setting for Nicolas Cage.

Just got the chance to watch Renfield last night.  It was the perfect setting.  I went to my local 24-hour members-only cigar lounge at around 1AM.  being the only one there at the time I was able to have full control over the television and the lights.  Cutting, toasting, and lighting my first cigar, I dimmed the lights and started the movie.

Now, just a few months ago I didn't want to see this movie.  I thought a comedy about Dracula would not work and didn't think Nicolas Cage as Dracula would work either.  The actor playing Renfield looked spot-on, but I still had my reservations about the movie overall.  You see, Dracula (1931) is my favorite movie and Bela Lugosi is my favorite actor - if anyone hadn't known that yet (sheesh, I think I've mentioned this so much on the podcast that people should start taking a drink any time I mention it for here on forward).  I had heard that the movie was recreating some of the scenes from the 1931 movie, so I was very upset that they would mess with perfection.  But, I decided to check out the flick anyway because I was in the mood for a "new" horror movie that I hadn't seen yet.

I'll make this quick and will try not to ramble too much.  I immediately fell in love with the movie.  The characters, the sets, the gore - it was all very cool.  the recreations of the 1931 movie looked fantastic and were done with the utmost respect.  Cage played a wonderful Lugosi's Dracula in the recreations and it was kind of scary.  You can definitely tell he is a fan, has done his homework, and set out to do right by the character.  Overall I thought the comedic elements were perfect and not forced.  I even found myself laughing out loud a few times (thankfully I was alone). The story was decent enough and the actors all played their part perfectly.  My only gripe is that at the end of the movie, which has a 93-minute runtime, I found myself wanting more.  Another 30 minutes or so would have been great.  And there are no mid or end-credit scenes - which kind of let me down.

Does the movie set itself up for a sequel?  (Potential spoiler ahead)  Well, we all know, Count Dracula can never truly be killed. Can he?  I don't think Universal has any plans right now for a second movie to low box office numbers.  But I think this is because people, like me, had a negative preconceived notion of how the movie would be.  Boy was I wrong.  Can't wait to purchase the DVD!  Hopefully, there will be some good "extras" attached.

How do those work? Are they just woven into the movie, or some kind of extra?

They are shown in a flashback-type sequence.  Done very well.
