Not counting Led Zeppelin which many music fans argue is more of a blues-rock than heavy metal band per se, my favourite heavy metal band is Metallica. Here are my three favourite Metallica tracks:

Whiskey in the Jar

The Unforgiven

Nothing Else Matters

Another heavy metal band I rank right up there with if not above Metallica is Deep Purple:

Child in Time

Smoke on the Water

Highway Star

Woman from Tokyo

I'm a huge Deep Purple fan. Great choices Hep. Purple has had a million lineup changes over their 50+ yr career. Drummer Ian Paice is the only member to appear in every lineup. I like all the lineups, even the current version. But the MK III version is my fav lineup.

Quote from: geezer butler on November 09, 2021, 10:14:55 PMGreat list Hep. I like those songs too. Definitely heavy rock songs. I would argue the first proper metal album is the self-titled Black Sabbath record (recorded in 69, released in 1970). But Zeppelin was definitely the bridge between the heavy blues rock of the 60s and Black Sabbath.

Truthfully I'm an old blues rock fan and I can't classify myself as a heavy metal fan. Quite simply most of the popular heavy metal bands with their own ardent fan bases do nothing for me. For example, Paranoid is the only track by Black Sabbath or Ozzie Osbourne that I like.

Similarly this is the only Van Halen number I like:

Jamie's Crying

(No video above since I can't stomach David Lee Roth's antics.)

And this is the only AC/DC number I like:

Who Made Who

(Should actually be Who Made Whom? but I'll not be picky. It's a good song.)

Quote from: Hepcat on November 09, 2021, 05:30:19 PMHere is a baker's dozen of proto-metal tracks that predated the 12 January 1969 release of Led Zeppelin's first LP from which the heavy metal genre can arguably be dated:

You Really Got Me - Kinks

Wild Thing - Troggs

Over Under Sideways Down - Yardbirds

Devil with a Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly - Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels

Beck's Bolero - Jeff Beck

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix Experience

You Keep Me Hangin' On - Vanilla Fudge

Sunshine of Your Love - Cream

Summertime Blues - Blue Cheer

Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly

Five to One - Doors

Helter Skelter - Beatles

In compiling my initial list above I really wanted to limit my selections to the tracks which could be said to have been "immediate" formative influences for heavy metal. I therefore didn't want to go back even five years before early 1969 let alone into the 1950's. I would have to say though that this track is one of the very best examples of proto-metal that can be found:

I Put a Spell on You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins
