July 4th, 2020

It's 6:00 PM on the Left Coast (2 hours BEFORE sunset) and a bunch of the annual money-burners are blowing up all of their bankroll that they could afford.  Too damned impatient to wait until after dark, when they could get maximum benefit from watching their cash evaporate in a cloud of fowl-smelling sulfur pollution.

I guess they would feel the same about watching me spend hundreds of dollars on an old, used plastic toy that they wouldn't accept as a gift.

To each his/her own.

HAPPY & SAFE 4th of JULY, EVERYONE!

Try to make it through another Independence Day with all your fingers and no new diseases.

Kinda depends on whether you're facing North, or South.

Neither.

I was facing a standard map.

Actually, it's a 16" globe.

Hey - how did the private fireworks go where you are?  Like I said, they started at 6:00 here.  It is now 11:45 and they are still going.  Not solid, but steady, like the beat of two people talking back and forth.  Not very long pauses between explosions.

Oddly, they are not the regular cheap roadside stand variety fireworks.  This year, they are the rockets and big dandelion sky bursts that are usually reserved for professional shows - and from all sides.  I could see that coming rom one or two directions, but it seems like everybody has them this year - and all private fireworks have been illegal in this county for many decades.

OK, they are starting to slow down now.  At least the ones nearby.  I still hear them in the distance.  I haven't heard a single fire engine tonight - and nothing that sounded like a gun shot.

I didn't hear anything. I'm inside with the windows closed (it was in the 90s today).

Got up to 85 here (south of Los Angeles).  There was a gentle breeze and the humidity was fairly low.  Prime wildfire weather - not the best time for unregulated fireworks.  That's why I was surprised to not hear any firetrucks.

12:15 and just an occasional boom in the distance now.

The home-based fireworks over Los Angeles on the 4th - as seen from a drone.

And that went on for over 5 solid hours here in Orange County, where all fireworks are illegal.

Americans LOVE to blow stuff up.

Oh man, so cool! I wish there was more of that in Toronto. I still have fond memories of buying firecrackers right up through elementary school during the weeks leading up to Victoria Day in May.

And that went on for over 5 solid hours here in Orange County, where all fireworks are illegal.

California seems to be the state most positively determined to ban and outlaw things in the U.S. Back in the 1960's California had a reputation as being a fun place with surfing, drive-ins, drag racing, "Big Daddy" Roth, outlaw motorcycle gangs, Muscle Beach,  the Mamas and the Papas, Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, the Oakland Raiders, but that's all gone now. Activist politicians have sucked all the fun out of the place. And that's why everybody else refers to the place as LaLa Land.

Here is a better view of the fireworks, with sound.

I like this one even more:

Glad they didn't burn the place down.
