I'd like to share something on the hopeful side, if I may:

First of all, it's not my intent to minimize COVID-19. I've had bronchitis 2X in 2 months, placing me in a high risk category. It's hard, I wish I didn't have to work. I work in a shelter. We try to keep our numbers down, but we don't know what's going to come thru the door. Some clients aren't taking this seriously & are making bad decisions that could possibly affect the whole place.

However, MOST people who get COVID-19 are recovering. And we don't need doctor or hospital services unless we are experiencing shortness of breath. Also, MOST people who are hospitalized AND on ventilators are recovering. And keep in mind, the news & social media tend to sensationalize everything.

Our best defense IS hand washing/sanitizing & NOT touching your face or other people. Plus the 3-6ft physical distancing. These work. The virus is a wimp to soap, water & sanitizers.

A last note: Many of the front line healthcare workers who've died from COVID-19 were emergency room personnel who came in contact with it before more solid precautions were set into place.

I obtained this info from a recorded video conference featuring a NYC doctor who's been working w/virus patients exclusively for over a month. I can do my best to find it again, if you'd like to see & hear for yourself.

Good post. I know some people who are really losing their s%&# of this, and I try to get them to have some perspective.  No doubt this is real, it's serious, it's scary, and we need to act responsibly. But as you point out, we know how this spreads, and how to stop it. We also know the percentages. Yet, I know people who are afraid to walk their dog or go to the grocery store. I feel really bad for the 20% who are infected and experiencing serious health problems. You point out, however, that as long as you cover your face when you sneeze and cough, practice social distancing, wash your hands regularly, and disinfect commonly used surfaces, you greatly, greatly, reduce the probability of being infected.

I don't see a lot of balance out there, but rather two extremes. People who are ignorant, if not defiant, and are making things worse by not practicing social distancing and proper hygiene. And then you have people who think the sky is falling. Problem is that side feeds into mass anxiety, not to mention triggers people hoarding toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

One side needs to wake the F up, and the other side needs to chill the F out. Just my opinion.

Geezer, you make some good points too, & thanks! I was in the "sky is falling" group until I came upon this info. It helped me to calm down & see things a little bit differently.  By sharing it, I hope it will help others too.

Problem is the soap and water theory doesn't hold water.

It is spread through droplets, yes, but those droplets exist in the air.

We have a serious supply shortage in the United States.  They don't want people running out and getting masks to wear everywhere.  Problem is a mask is just as essential as washing your hands.  Stay home.  Don't visit family, friends, or anyone outside of your house.

So long as they keep their brats inside, I'm ok.

I won't go into detail. We're well past that point.  But the numbers coming out of much of Europe as well as the United States now are beyond horrifying. And we've not yet seen a slackening in the geometric rate of increase.

Incidentally I'm highly skeptical of the totals being officially released from China. I think the Chinese regime is grossly understating them to stem panic and save their own necks.

Here's an article on this very subject:

U.S. Intelligence Report: China Has Been Cooking the Numbers

Russia, Iran, Indonesia and North Korea (Surprise, surprise!) are three of the other countries strongly suspected of way under reporting infections.

I'm pretty sure boredom will kill me before COVID-19. Stay safe everybody.

Is it just me, or has Internet traffic ground to a halt?  I used to think that nuisance e-mails were nothing but minor irritants.  But, now that even those have dried up, I miss the little diversions they provided.

One thing I'm not missing - cold call sales pitches from idiots who act like I should believe them when they tell me they are following up on an earlier conversation we had where I expressed interest in their service/product.  They must have gotten my name from a sucker list made up of "seniors" who might possibly be wealthy retirees suffering from alzheimer's.

Wish I had a big, lazy dog that lives for ear-scratching from his human.  He'd keep me company.  (I don't have any more use for a cat than they do for people.)

I love quiet, but really this is ridiculous.  At least if I lived in the country there would be occasional small wildlife and nightly serenades from the crickets and frogs.

But I am surrounded by my fellow human beings and I don't even hear TV's, radios, stereos - NUTHIN'!  I can't remember the last time some idiot opened his car door without first turning off his alarm.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm living my own Target Earth scenario and everybody was evacuated from the city while I was sleeping?

I can't imagine what it must be like for all of you who still go to work five days a week.  How are you adjusting?  I hope you are all making it out there.

Truthfully I can't understand why you yourself continue to live wherever you do in California. You're retired meaning you're not tied to a job. You're not tied to any kids. Why don't you blow earthquake country with its expensive real estate and move to a far cheaper locale?, Say a cabin or trailer park in the lovely Catskills or Alleghenies?

Is it the starlets and strip joints that keeps you in California?

The hookers.  I'd have to leave my favorites.

That, and my friends are here.  I'd really like to see how the two girls I babysit 3 times a week grow up - at least as much as i can before I croak.  And I hate moving.  Promised myself never again.

But, mostly the hookers.

That's the best reason not to move. The "moving" part!
