I saw! I wonder how much will be saved? A lot of art is going to be lost, that's for sure!

A disaster for all mankind. The whole structure is an historic work of art.

It's not looking like any of it is going to be saved. They suspect arson now. ISIS tried to attack this structure in 2016. bunch of propane tanks. I hate to say it, but once an idea is out there, it's possible someone picked back up where they left off. The structure survived 2 World Wars. yet now its gone. If this is terrorism, "We are rushing towards an Apocalypse of our own creation" applies. Sad day for culture.

Heard speculation that the fire may be related to restoration that was taking place.

Who's they?

Two or three workers, and one elected official called in to Fox today and suggested they investigate a potential terrorism angle.  They weren't given much speaking time. Obviously they won't be until after a thorough investigation is done. Primarily for fear of a civil uprisings I am sure. They've been having a lot of trouble over there with riots and unrest. They don't want more obviously. You have been watching the riots, cars burning, and all the yellow vest stuff haven't you? seems they are in the news a lot these days.

I wouldn't buy any fear-mongering crap about Muslim terrorists, especially considering the wacky sources on that. There is precisely zero evidence of it being a terrorist attack of any kind. Anyway, while it's not clear yet just how the fire started, it's been known that there were renovation attempts on the cathedral for a little while, and when workers are dealing with structures like this, one that's basically made of incredibly old wood and limestone (which of course is flammable), there's a considerable risk factor. It may have survived a very long time, but it's more fragile than one would think.

Seems to me the fire started high up on the building. All that old, old wood? The wind up there feeding the fire? The vast open spaces, all that ventilation they provide? A small fire could easily have become a big fire very quickly.

Thankfully the worst was somehow averted. The fire's out, and the bell towers were saved, and the overall structure seems to have been saved too. The organ inside was saved, as was the Crown of Thorns, and I have heard that they somehow managed to save some of the artwork. But the roof is gone, and some of the famous rose windows may have been damaged or even destroyed as well. Now it's a matter of figuring out how weakened the structure might be, what heat expansion could do to those old walls, and not only assessing damage from the fire, but from the water as well. The old mortar they used wasn't really water proof, so you have to figure all the water they pumped into the building could easily have contributed to any structural weakness.

At the very least, it wasn't completely destroyed. It's devastating, and it's tragic, and it's not over yet. But all hope is not yet lost.

There doesn't seem to be a hint of it in any mainstream news reports. I'm sure it will turn out to be a pain old boring accident.

At least one of the rosette windows survived. The bells towers, organ, and alter are also spared. Lucky, lucky, lucky.

I sure hope so.

The only thing other than injury or death that can make a devastating fire even worse is learning that some moron started it on purpose.

I hope that's the case. I really don't take anything Fox News says seriously. They always like to blame Muslims, Mexicans, and migrants for everything. Remember, they
deal in "alternative facts".  I'm fine with reality.
