AHI sells for high! Dollars that is...
« on: December 05, 2007, 07:13:47 AM »
Well, that's nothing new per sé, but there have been several rather difficult to come by Azrak-Hamway Universal Monster items to change hands via ebay in the last 6+ months:

Frankenstein squirt gun loose and nearly broken in half (item # 190178341454) closed 3 Dec, to frankensly for US $611.51.

King Kong squirt gun (190178341468), also today, to ttob1556265gst at US $129.21.

Wolfman Flasher Faces on a lesser card (300171184876) on 18 Nov '07 to frankenkid for US $645.99

Creature From The Black Lagoon World's Greatest Super Monsters action figure 1st / wide waist version sealed on a cut card (330183757063) 11 Nov '07, on its second listing after an unpaid high bid of 2900+ earlier in the month, to a private buyer for US $2,600.00.

Creature From The Black Lagoon World's Greatest Super Monsters action figure 2nd / wide waist version on a sealed card (260147856814) 16 Aug 2007 to tratc1957 for $8,100.

Creature From The Black Lagoon World's Greatest Super Monsters action figure 1st / slim waist version on a sealed card late May / early June 2007 in the 2K range.

Those are some fairly lofty prices compared to the last sales of some of these items.  The Creature figures aren't much of a surprise (besides the slim waist selling for under 4K), as Creature collectors are known fanatics (Mea culpa in the extreme), but the Flasher Faces Wolfman (as well as a recent Frankenstein that I did not record but went to a Japanese buyer for perhaps in the $450 range in mid May '07 if memory serves) are a startle.  The Frankenstein Squirt Gun, in such damaged condition, is quite puzzling.  Not to brag, but I thank my mom again for giving my the dime that got me mine at that garage sale (and the dollar that bought the '63 Ideal Godzilla game at that some sale).  While I'm at it, the for add the 1.38 that netted me the Wolfman and Frankenstien Flasher Faces (reduced from 99˘ ea.) in 1980 as well.  OK, that's bragging, but I'm very grateful just the same.

If I can get the flickr sets sorted, I'll edit this to include pix, so check back...

I'm not at all surprised by the Flasher Faces price.  Granted, I may be a bit biased as the seller, but think of how many of those you've seen in comparison to other AHI toys.  The flashers and squirt guns are genuinely rare items, more so than any of the action figures - including the Creature.
Now, the broken Frankenstein squirt gun sold a little high.  I believe that one changed hands not too long ago for around $300, and the condition is poor as I recall.  But again, items that are that scarce can fluctuate drastically for a lot of reasons.
You're right, though...the AHI market is crazy.

I could have kicked myself when I let an auction of loose ahi figures pass me buy. There they were all 5 in pretty decent shape. The listing didn't mention that they were ahi, the Wolf Man was described as the Wherewolf, and The Creature was the Swamp monster. They sold for somewhere between $350-$400. UGH! :-[

That squirt gun outcome is quite a shock to me, I think I got mine in a bargain box at a toy show.

I agree with you about the rarity, what has surprised me is that the ancillary items have caught on so strongly in terms of desire (as measured by trading price).  The Super Monsters figures are plentiful, and the massive number of relatively subtle variations (save out man Gill) only confuse that market, but for many toy lines, the tchotchke items are lesser, both in price and collectible 'status' (I'm thinking Mego figures to AHI cars and helicopters etc).  With few exceptions (Sky Diving Robin being the major one) the Mego action figures are in far more demand, both in price and as gauged by 'collector respect' than most other contemporary Hero items.  While monsters have steadily risen in demand over the last 15 years, the smaller stuff, especially from AHI looks to have risen much more dramatically in price.  Perhaps that there is so little of it, not just available on the market, but in terms of breadth of products - no Frankenstien parachutist (I honestly dreamt of a Sky Diving Creature as a kid, looking through the pegs every time just in case) no Monsters riding in a remote control dune buggy -  fuels the mystique.  I am always surprised the Bend 'Ems are not in greater demand.

I think alot has to do with the fact that most serious  AHI collectors have all the other stuff and it's been awhile since they see something they don't have.

If I haven't seen an item of interest in days. weeks, months etc...when I finally do I'll spend much more than I usually would considering I'm not buying as often.

These items fall into that category for almost ALL AHI collectors.

I;m surprised at the Flashlight though considering it's not from the Super monsters line.  Always expensive, but damn..someone wanted that thing real bad.

On a side note, whats the currency exchange for Yen???

That auction surprised me, even given the condition of the figures.  I thought it would go for more.

No not those. This was maybe back in September and the people who listed it really had no idea what they had...no mention of AHI or even by mistake Mego. All the figures were in great shape...better than those...except for the male creature which had paint loss. I was the high bidder in that auction...but I got away from the computer before I got carried away with myself. My wife is very understanding as she loves monsters too...but I know when not to rock the boat.

Yeah, I'd say so. $231.00? I'd buy sets of these figures all day long for that price! Creature included of course.

Well, they all had condition issues, including the Creature's arm being broken off and glued back on, but even still....  someone got a nice deal there.

I stayed away from them because of the condition.  I suspect most potential bidders did, too.
