No, Universal was just too cheap to pay him extra for playing both parts! He wanted more money, and they wouldn't do it. Lugosi had a history of working cheap, so...

David Manners got paid more for acting in Dracula than Lugosi himself. There's a legitimate reason why Bela G. hates Universal.

Truth be told, Bela was their last choice for the role of Dracula..he had already put himself in for the part and Universal rejected him. It was only through Tod Browning's persistance and lack of anyone else even near suitable that finally got Lugosi the part.

Watched the 1941 Black Cat last night. Fun movie but should have had a different title as it doesn't compare to the 30s version of Black Cat!
