Sculpted versus fabric clothing?

Which do you prefer on figures - sculpted clothing, or fabric clothing?  Does sculpted make it a "figure" and fabric make it a "doll"?

I'm currently sculpting a small clothed figure (not a monster, sadly).  I find clothing very challenging to sculpt, but then sewing tiny clothing is also a challenge!

I prefer real clothing on figures. On 1/6 scale figures, real clothing is almost a must.

It takes real diligence to locate fabrics with the right weight and drape, so everything doesn't come out a stiff tube...

I was fortunate to find a woman who specializes in custom figure clothing. She makes 1/8, 1/9 and 1/6 size custom figure clothing. Her work is amazing. Being that her work is the caliber it is, there is usually a waiting list. Without her, I wouldn't have some of the figures in my collection. Here is the link to her site. Also, here are some projects she did for me.

She made this entire suit, including the tie with the design and even the bone necklace for this Leatherface figure.

Entire outfit for Buffalo Bill Silence of the Lambs figure. The patterns on the shirt were hand drawn by her.

Also, member here Anton Phibes commissioned her to make a more accurate Mrs Bates outfit for the DD figure. Here is the link.

That is the coolest thing ever!  Hurrah for her.  I love it when people can find a niche like that.

Have you tried no-sew glue or sobo glue? I've made many a small fabric clothed figures without sewing a stitch- I'm lucky if I can sew a lost button back on one of my shirts! As long as the cloth stays dry, the glue will hold and it's flexible.

No sewing required.

I hate sewing.
I prefer sculpted clothes--especially since I found the secret ingredient for good painted clothes...

CORN STARCH!

It takes the gloss right out of the paint.

I hate sculpting clothes as well though.
If I could get a flocking gun to use on painted clothes that would be best.

Here is a Mr Barlow bust I started a couple of years back and haven't gotten round to finishing. (Buying a house that needed fully renovating has completely used up all my time!) Anyway, I had a go at sculpting his clothing, and whilst I was reasonably happy with the results I decided to go with real fabric, mainly because the figure is so large (about 1:4 scale) and I was much happier with how he turned out. If I ever sculpt any larger figures I think I'll be opting for fabric, but with smaller sculpts I prefer to see sculpted clothing!

This is magnificent! Have you thought about turning this into a full size figure?

Very cool Barlow.  Agree with THM a full size is in order..damn the house;)

Whenever I'm making a figure smaller scale stuff I tend to sculpt the clothing/accessories. On larger figures I tend to use 'like' materials of what I'm trying to duplicate.  When I made my Pinhead I cut down small picture nails for his pins, jewelry chain for his chains, etc.  the only item on Pinhead I cheated on was his cloak (I couldn't find the right material).  My black raincoat was sacrificed

I can't express how thrilled I am that people are posting in this thread!  Super to see how everyone feels, and especially to see the examples.

On smaller figures I prefer sculpted clothing, but on 12" figures cloth is preferred if the character actually wore clothing. There are exceptions such as the excellent 12" Creature figure from Sideshow with the rubber suit. 8" figures are in that gray area where cloth is usually preferable but sometimes ends up looking too thick and heavy with not enough buttons and other details. Distinctive Dummies usually does a good job on the clothing for the 8" figures but it's tough to make it look the correct scale and sometimes the DD clothes are a bit off. We're forgiving though because we are so elated just to get figures with good facial sculpts of some of our favorite obscure characters.
