Perhaps I'm just out of the loop nowadays, but I can't recall hearing of any national promotions similar to this one in more recent decades.

I don't know of any either. For the last several years most kids couldn't get their heads out of their devices long enough to build a model.  ::)

And I'm not just talking about model kit building competitions. I recall regional, even national, championships held by Wham-O for Hula Hoops and Frisbees and Duncan for Yo-Yos and Spin Tops.
