King Kong Cartoon?
« on: December 27, 2008, 12:28:38 PM »
Just out of curiosity, Does anybody remember the King Kong cartoon that was in the late 60's or early 70's?  I remember that I didn't watch it, but I was curious if anybody did.

And how about Grape Ape?

I'm familiar with it, but I've never watched an episode.  I've got a bendie Kong from the cartoon.  There's also an MPC playset that is pretty cool.  I think there's a hand puppet, too.

It was from 1966 and made by Rankin/Bass. Tom From T.H.U.M.B. was the other toon that ran in the 1/2 hr show. If you type the R/B name and KK in a Google search you'll find more info (and pics) on the show. The series is on DVD, too. There was quite a bit of merchandice from the show.

It was definitely aimed at kids, but it was fun in its way.  I have the board game from it.

There was a two-parter called "Key To The City" with newly-discovered Kong doing the whole Empire State schtick. With jets. Not having seen the original movie at that point, I remember being tremendously excited by these episodes. Happily, this time, Kong got down intact, the better to pursue his life of adventure.

I believe Rankin-Bass spun the toon off Toho's KING KONG ESCAPES. The human characters were different, but I think the island was the same, and both featured arch-villain "Dr Who" (no relation). The Doc died messily in the movie, but he was a recurring menace in the toon.

Rankin/Bass co-produced KKE, but it came out a year after the cartoon show.

Really? So it was the other way around.... which means that egg-domed little rat from the cartoon, technically got his in the movie. Yay!!!! for the messy deserved death of Dr Who (no relation).

That was my favorite cartoon for a couple of years in the '60's.  I got that MPC play set for Christmas in 1967 from my grandmother.  It was, hands down, my favorite present that Christmas!

I used to watch it when I was a kid but about the only thing I can remember about it was the theme song and I liked it better when the kid in the cartoon wasn't involved in the story and it was more about Kong himself which wasn't too many episodes.

I was crazy about that cartoon and have the DVD's series.  King Kong and Bobby Bond.  The MPC playset is very cool.  I've had it before, but not in a while.  I got outbid on one a couple months ago.  Also had the Mattel Pull-String Talker in the box once.  All I have today is the Magic Slate and the soundtrack LP.  It had a great theme song!

Would you mind posting a pic of the soundtrack later?  Would love to see it.  Many thanks!

I loved that when I was a kid. I bought a bootleg disc of Ebay a couple years ago. Cheesy but still fun. I annoyed the hell out of several of the guys at work by singing the theme song out of the blue. :D
The other cartoon T.H.U.M.B is soo bad that I barely made it thru 2 episodes.
Wasn't Kong on around the same time frame as The Herculoids? That one was cool too. I have a DVD-R of the whole series somewhere but haven't watched it in a couple years.
