I'm surprised that ABBY wasn't called THE BLAXORCIST!  ;D

The era of the "Blacksploitation" films. When it came to horror, it was all "Blackula" and "Blackenstein" and such.

Martin(1973)

MARTIN is a great little film. It's definitely one of Romero's most underrated films.

Yeah, this, SEASON OF THE WITCH and THE CRAZIES should get checked out by anyone who just knows Romero for his Dead films. :)

Two great little films! THE CRAZIES even led to a pretty decent remake a few years ago.

I'll second that about MARTIN and THE CRAZIES.

I suppose THE CRAZIES was spawned perhaps out of THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN concept, which opens with a scene familiar to VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED as well.  These "isolated communities suffering some strange phenonema" types...

IMPULSE (1984 with Meg Tilly and Tim Matheson) follows a roughly identical story-line as THE CRAZIES, but with the civilians acting out when murderous behaviors instead of our normal better moral'd choices.

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE was Stephen King's with Yeardley Smith offering her candidacy as Scream Queen; this one's 'phenomena' seems a bit more global as I think the film's characters head off for a yacht to escape the world of mad machines.  That probablly qualifies OVERDRIVE as more of a DAY OF TRIFFIDS adventure than an 'isolated community event'.

I think this "isolated community event" might also be argued to be the basis for the RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD stories, as one city is nuked to close that film, and those are worthy of mentioning just to get James Karen's, Clu Gulager's and Don Calfa's names into this note!
