Mars, you might feel differently if you'd had a Garloo back them. Put yourself in a 9 or 10 year old mind set and have a look at the Great Garloo TV commercial.  I teamed my Garloo up with my Kenner Girder and Panel construction set and it was like having my own living monster movie in my bedroom. It doesn't get much better than that.

Agreed! I got a brand new Great Garloo for X-mas when I was a kid. I thought it was the greatest toy ever conceived back then. A cherished childhood memory for me. That's the appeal of Garloo.

I completely agree with the nostalgia of owning a Great Garloo, and
the collectiblity. But in terms of aesthetics, that toy is looks awful.
Only my opinion. There are so many collectible toys I owned as a kid
at one time, that I would never want again. Nostalgia. Do collectors
in some instances only collect the the vintage toys  because of
Nosalgia, or do they truly love the item for it's aethetic, not value?

Judging by the high prices being paid for Lincoln & Tomland figures, nostalgia trumps aesthetics.

For me the underlying aesthetics and pedigree of being from that era really count. Many items are special just because of when they came out and the look they have because of that. They may not be realistic or accurate or even have the various pieces to a consistent scale, but that doesn't keep them from being beautiful to some of us. If you loved it as a kid because you had it or really wanted it, then that really ramps up the appeal.

My own collecting efforts have long been based on four pillars:

1. Nostalgia
2. Aesthetics
3. Scarcity. I've always been inclined to gather up the tougher items.
4. Affordability. The lower the price, the better.

Points three and four taken together have always had me steering clear of those items that are expensive because of high demand.

You know...the toys that you look at and cannot understand why anyone would collect them? It has to be monster toy though - so don't say "superheroes" or "robots". etc. Soooo, the one sub-genre of monster toys that I just don't get are: the Mego-style figures. For the life of me, I just can't get into monster toys with Barbie-doll type clothing wrapped around them.... But IMHO, the smaller 8" figures just look goofy with clothing, AND those massive and obvious joints look horrible. Usually, the only thing I find appealing about them is just the head sculpt, and that's about it.

I'm with you. I have no interest whatsoever in the AHI, Lincoln, Mego or whatever doll or action figures that were released after the sixties.

No Remco, Sideshow, Diamond, Super 7, or anything? There were no '60s monster "action figures."

While the modern "action" figures may be much improved in quality, I'm not likely to ever start buying them. Quite simply they're behind dozens of other monster-related collecting priorities on my list.

I like most '60s stylized figures (MPC/Palmer/Nutty Mads/Niks), as well as realistic figures (Marx). I also like good quality modern jointed/clothed figures (Sideshow/DD).

Sorry I can't join the negativity-fest. Not.  :P
Okay, this thread keeps rolling back around, so I'm gonna cave in and dip my toe into that pool of negative energy...

FUNKO POPS!  >:D    These things will never come near my collection, not even the Creature, and I buy Creature everything, just not a POP.

Funko Pops as opposed to Funko Wacky Wobblers or do you not distinguish between the two?

I'm guilty of having a Creature Pop, but only the regular version and I opened it and threw away the box, it was a gift. Beanie babies of the 2000's.

I would rather collect the vintage Ahi, Remco, Castex, Rapco, it's all vintage cheese.

So much was actually bootlegged early on and I like those pieces even more.

I have all 3 Creatures and I wish I had bought a crate of each! Have you seen what those are selling for!?  :)

There are five Pop! Creatures, not including a package varition. And they certainly are expensive, aren't they? Well beyond my interest in them, anyway.

Even at original retail, I found a couple the Pops and the entire Funko Hikari line overpriced. Of course, the Hikari items didn't appreciate on the after-market the way the Pops have. There's even a digital version of the monsters, including the Creature, available for purchase (at least at one time) in Funko's mobile game. I keep wondering if a market is being set up for those as well.
