Ray Ferry's Monster Binders

Craig is having a little fun with you guys. "Arlis" is an alias Ferry uses when he photoshops art for his mag covers. He probably made the name up by taking the word "alias" and adding and dropping a letter. Imagination is not his strongsuit, except maybe in planning a good con. Like Mike said, RF swipes everything and then twists it to make a buck.

And yeah, I can believe Ferry failed to pay storage unit rent. He's just that kinda guy.

Also, I confess that I have several of the FM things RF was responsible for, including his FM issues, 3 of the wallets, pinback buttons, etc. Even though the guy's a turd, that stuff is part of monster collecting history, and so it has a place in my collection. His FM was a pale shadow of the Warren FM, but I wanted the entire run so I picked them up, mostly new. I tell you one thing, though, I never gave high prices for any of them as back issues like that Teachbug clown was scamming people with. He was selling some of those for hundreds of dollars each to some poor deluded "collectors". I even bought the first 14 issues of Freaky Monsters until I finally had to tap out simply because I couldn't stand to deal with the guy anymore. Even keeping up with monster history as an obsessive collector has it's limits after putting up with so much crap from that guy and his cohorts.

...except for creature.  what the hell, ...

Photoshop job using the face of Marvel's Manphibian character as drawn by Neal Adams (and created by Creature fan Dave Cockrum as a tribute of sorts to ole' Gil).

>I agree, he ripped off ... So he must have hired artists to work for his publication.<

Hugo, have you ever heard of "Arlis"? That seems to be the main artist that Ferry - er - "hires."

-Craig

Now I do remember seeing the name Arlis on the inside flap.   I actually have some of the better covers Arlis did for RF's FM.   The Bela Lugosi close up comes to mind.

Mike, that's not the only time Ferry got up in Neal's bidness:

I remember meeting Ray Ferry just once, and taking an instant disliking to him. I tried to warn Forry at the time, telling him, "He just doesn't seem trustworthy to me. Watch out for him." If only I had known...

hey Wich2, are we sure its really Ray Ferry?   and are the covers really photoshopped?   I know photoshop, having worked with it and back then, there weren't that many filters to completely change the look.

I am thinking of FM #30 and the Ray Ferry cover of #234.    same pose and almost the same artwork, but of course, different colors, shading etc.

I think "Arlis" came along later. I think he had some actual artists working for him in the early days.

I agree about an actual artist working for RF.

some of the artwork just seems to real to be photoshopped.

Gents, I didn't say Ferry NEVER used other artists; other writers, too - until he burned them out. But check this post, and the surrounding thread. Facts are facts:

And there they are - presented by an artist who knows what he's talking about.

Happy Holidays,

Thanks for the link, Craig.     yup, the older art shines in comparison to the Ferry Covers.    Shame on him.    Or worse.

Back when Teachbug came over and annoyed everyone to their wits end, I took an old FM cover, ran it thru a half dozen filters, played with the color saturation and tints and showed everyone how easy it was to do an "Arlis" cover. But my photobucket account is gone now, and the thread is ancient. But its easily done.

It astounds me how Freaky Monsters, a pale imitation of Forry's mag, with its sordid history due to its owner managed to hang around as long as it did....but Undying Monsters ended so quickly. There is no justice in this world I tell ya,lol.

I havent seen a new issue on stands in quite awhile. I assumed it gasped its last breath and gave up the ghost. I could be wrong.
