Don't know why it would amaze you. In the realm of 1960's monster toys, or really, with almost any toys from that era, give or take 5 or 10 years, original price for the product has virtually nothing to do with prices of today for what these toys are worth. I sometimes just don't understand the "mindset" sometimes of collectors. Aurora monster kits used to be a "whopping" 98 cents for crying out loud back in the day. Or, even cheaper at discount stores. Superman toys,Batman toys, Green Hornet toys, non-sports gumcards, all the "golden-age" monster toys, etc. were all usually really "cheap" by todays standards. I used to buy whole boxes of Outer Limits gumcards when they were new, 24 mint un-opened packs, and the mint box for a whole dollar and 20 cents. They were 5 cents a pack. Just remember, back then, that was about 2 weeks worth of allowence too!! Sure, we would all love to find these things at yard-sales, flea markets where the person just wouldn't know what he had, or other places. But, if you're a real collector, and just aren't "crying-the blues" because you want an item but don't have the funds available, you're going to purchase, plain and simple.
Well, ok, I can surely understand where you're comming from in regards to the pricing of this particular bucket head, or even other monster toys in general. But, you are amongst the group here with all of us at this super-great site talking monsters, so you should really know maybe as to the pricing of some of these pieces. Do you buy monster toys?? Here is another "angle", so to speak, to just throw out there to you, or anybody else for that matter. Lets suppose you're looking on e-bay at the monster toys. Now, the only reason I'm saying this is because you stated that you don't know if you'd even consider buying this piece, even if you had the money to do so. In the scheme of things, yes, 550 is a bit of money to spend. But, unless you're dreaming of buying one in some of the places like I mentioned , you may never get that opportunity. So, getting back to what I was saying, on e-bay, looking at the monster toys, you could spend that same 550 on almost anything, right?? This is why I asked you if you even buy monster toys. You could purchase one of the many hundreds of Godzilla so-called limited editions of figures, or even the forever increasing limited editions of Universal monster pieces for the same money, even a lot more, and some a lot less. If you bought enough of these, for more, or less, the money would add up real quick. However, for my money, I'd much rather buy something vintage, with "true" rarity for the same money. Again, plain and simple.
