What is going on here? Is this some king of Bizarro world alternate universe? I'll wait for the third or fourth one to pop up and buy the cheapest.

These prices amaze me for something that probably cost $1.99 when it was new.  :o

Don't know why it would amaze you.  In the realm of 1960's monster toys, or really, with almost any toys from that era, give or take 5 or 10 years, original price for the product has virtually nothing to do with prices of today for what these toys are worth.  I sometimes just don't understand the "mindset" sometimes of collectors. Aurora monster kits used to be a "whopping" 98 cents for crying out loud back in the day. Or, even cheaper at discount stores. Superman toys,Batman toys, Green Hornet toys, non-sports gumcards, all the "golden-age" monster toys, etc. were all usually really "cheap" by todays standards. I used to buy whole boxes of Outer Limits gumcards when they were new, 24 mint un-opened packs, and the mint box for a whole dollar and 20 cents. They were 5 cents a pack. Just remember, back then, that was about 2 weeks worth of allowence too!! Sure, we would all love to find these things at yard-sales, flea markets where the person just wouldn't know what he had, or other places. But, if you're a real collector, and just aren't "crying-the blues" because you want an item but don't have the funds available, you're going to purchase, plain and simple.

Well said, Mike, and there also is no substitution for the original, in the case of a piece like this.

I get all that. It was more of a personal observation. For someone on a limited budget like myself I could never spend that kind of money on an item like this and I'm of the age to have actually owned one of these when I was a kid. You have to have really deep pockets for that and if you do more power to you. To be honest I don't know that I would spend that kind of money on something like this even if I had the money but that's just me.

Well, ok, I can surely understand where you're comming from in regards to the pricing of this particular bucket head, or even other monster toys in general. But, you are amongst the group here with all of us at this super-great site talking monsters, so you should really know maybe as to the pricing of some of these pieces. Do you buy monster toys??  Here is another "angle", so to speak, to just throw out there to you, or anybody else for that matter.  Lets suppose you're looking on e-bay at the monster toys.  Now, the only reason I'm saying this is because you stated that you don't know if you'd even consider buying this piece, even if you had the money to do so. In the scheme of things, yes, 550 is a bit of money to spend. But, unless you're dreaming of buying one in some of the places like I mentioned , you may never get that opportunity. So, getting back to what I was saying, on e-bay, looking at the monster toys, you could spend that same 550 on almost anything, right??  This is why I asked you if you even buy monster toys. You could purchase one of the many hundreds of Godzilla so-called limited editions of figures, or even the forever increasing limited editions of Universal monster pieces for the same money, even a lot more, and some a lot less. If you bought enough of these, for more, or less, the money would add up real quick. However, for my money, I'd much rather buy something vintage, with "true" rarity for the same money.  Again, plain and simple.

I think we all have different areas of preference when collecting. I was really tempted with this piece, only because it's so iconic and at a comparatively reasonable price. Others may look at this & not get the same tingly twinge some collectors do. I love the artistry of hand painted pieces by great modelers. To me the work and accuracy that goes into ,say, a Jeff Yagher or Ray Satoleri sculpture will seduce me to reach for my wallet. Vintage toy guys couldn't care less. As for Gory Glenn, his preference is classic & custom masks. You pull out a "must have" Don Post piece, and 'ol Glenn's reaching for his checkbook.

Very well put Skully. Now that I've been on these boards for awhile I've noticed varying types of collectors. There are the collectors that prefer the actual vintage items, there are the guys that are OK with re-pops because they still get the same kind of satisfaction from them as they would with the vintage equivalent, there are some that prefer modern toys because they are more realistic looking than vintage stuff and there are collectors here that prefer custom pieces. Me, I'm mainly a mask guy so when I see something like this I see 2 or more Don Post Calendar Mask re-issues for the same price.  :) So we're all here at the UMA like one big melting pot and we all have different views on what's important. My post was more thinking out loud than anything else and I get why some would find it strange. But in the end we all love monsters and that's what it's all about.

Typed most of this before I saw Mord's post so some of it's redundant. Well said my friend.  ;D

Super thoughts!!  And, you are so right!!  I know, we all have our own prefferences. Vintage is my "cup-of tea",  modern might be someone elses, and with you, the monster masks, well, they are really super cool!!!  I must agree here though, I remember vividly, back in the 90's, someone put out a very few Hideous Sun Demon masks, brand new pulls, that could be custom painted if you liked. A very good friend at the time got one, and had it painted.  I was "knocked to the floor" by this mask, it was one of the coolest monster things I've ever seen. And, it was new, and, I almost bought it!!   Monster "beauty" is truley in the eye of the beholder!

You struck a chord with the rarity/vintage thing vs. $$$ spent, Mike. When garage kits, high end masks, etc. first hit the airwaves (in the late 80s, I guess) it was their high price that kind of turned me off to collecting them, in any quantity, anyway. Here were these brand new figures, priced at $100-$400; boy, that buys a lot of vintage, i thought. And back then, one of these bucket heads went for $100-$200 or so. It was an easy choice. I just had too many vintage pieces I wanted to spread myself that thin. Plus, I always had trouble (being an artist), when someone is trying to recreate something realistically, when that something doesn't quite hit the mark. The quality of sculpts, etc. has def improved over the years, but I remember the day when all it took was "Oh my God, look, someone did a Glenn Strange Frankenstein kit!" and everyone would fall over and pull $250 out of their wallet. I always had trouble with that notion, especially when something didn't really grab me 110%. Guess I'm a prude. But $$ for old rare toys, etc. I could always justify...still can.

Hi Bob, couldn't agree more.  But, I don't want to offend anyone on this site, that's not my intent. Maybe I should look at this in another way perhaps. I guess you could almost say that the constant out-pouring of "collectibles" pertaining to monster type toys is in actuality, keeping the "spirit" of monsters in general alive??  We all know what happens when toys sort of go through their "cycles", a lot of the older tin and steel type toys now have a much more limited market, mainly because of collectors dying off for toys from this period, and the "newer" generation really not wanting these types of toys.  It's not to say that these toys are not good anymore, hardly the case, but, certain toys go through cycles, however, monster toys from the 60's and certain ones from the 70's are still quite popular. Which, is a good thing. It's just that I just can't see the logic, for the life of me, when someone buys a "limited edition" of anything really, for some big bucks, and like you so well said, you could buy something truly rare for the same money. But, that's just me. As mentioned earlier, some people like other things, and I guess this is what keeps collecting alive and well, at least for our type of toys.
