I saw there was no thread for the 1931 version of Svengali...so now there is. The film will air on TCM later this month, according to:

http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/1503/Svengali/

At the above link, you can see when it's on, and have TCM send you an email reminder if you'd like.

Just two days ago, this film was ranked Number 41 on our recent UMA list of 100! Being in the top 50 is something Svengali himself would be proud of.

If you don't have TCM, you can find the film on youtube.com as well.

I have it on DVD. My favorite part of the movie is when Svengali "calls" Trilby and the camera pans from his apartment, across the rooftops to her apt. Just a great shot! Great production design, too!

Thanks for the reply, and well said! There was a trailer for the film (for a screening of it somewhere - I can't find the link) and it had the exact scene you mentioned - what atmosphere! Makes me look forward to seeing it on TCM, because I haven't actually seen the film yet, despite adding it to our "Build a list of 100 Classic Horror/Sci-Fi Flicks!" thread to see how well it would do.

Somehow, this film was mostly unknown to me all this time. The first time I really became aware of "Svengali" was when I was waiting for "Twice Upon A Time" (1983) to air on TCM in late January / early February of this year. I almost saw the end of this 1931 classic that day, but I quickly stopped watching/listening as to not spoil it.

Reminder: In less than a week, the film airs on TCM.

Here's part of the scene that Mike Scott and I mentioned earlier:

Great miniature! Love the German expressionist influence in the design.

Right on! I've included more photos of the miniature below in this post, as part of some promotional material here:

By the way, if anyone knows what Robert Osborne basically said about this film when it aired last time, I'd appreciate it!

There's a bunch of good stuff on TCM in the next 24hrs, starting with THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE at midnight.
