Vincent Price chillingly portrays Joseph Curwen who possesses his descendant Charles Dexter Ward in The Haunted Palace (1963).

Though advertised as one of the Price Poe adaptations from AIP, it was based on the H.P. Lovecraft story The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward.

Memph,

This "Farmer John" makeup is pretty interesting.   I wonder what Grant Wood's Mrs. Farmer John would look like?

And this one is just, well, brutal.  Did the makeup artist fall in love with latex but discovered they didn't have wigs or faux-fur around?  Jeepers, just to brush a cat, if nothing else!

And this one... I don't know what this one was supposed to be.

Did the makeup artist misread the description and think "howling wolf" was actually a "howler primate"?

And this one doesn't look like it's 'mask-able' or even 'piece-able' - it doesn't look like it can be peeled off and re-applied.  But rather, it looks like the fur must be layered from the back of the skull (over a skull-cap) all the way to the nose.  Layer by layer.  The close-fit to the eyes and lips make me think that.

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf. He looks a lot more dog like from the side.

This specimen hails from WEREWOLF IN A GIRLS' DORMITORY..and yes, as werewolves go, he is rather pitiful.

LOVE Robot Monster.  And I need to see whatever Octaman is in.  He's awesome.

I love the creativity that the makeup artists use to deliver the monsters.   I wonder how much they were consulted in the financing luncheons that occurred before any filming (and even hiring) was done?  Probably "very little" - I assume the financiers were shown some kind of sketched out drawings for these, or maybe not at all.

"We just want to see the bottom line drawn out and printed, we don't care about anything else."

That's probably a good thing for those of us who appreciate the silly Giant Claw/It Conquered The World type of monsters.  If they'd looked at Wasp Woman's outfit first, who'd write a check for THAT production?!!

I understood IT CONQ's monster was a man crawling on his knees, and sometimes his heels would be snagged on the back of the foam-rubber cone of the monster, causing some tip-overs and torn-out limbs.

And I still think the actors who were confronted with these creations all deserve Oscar consideration for every page of script they'd complete without busting a gut, laughing.  Or running off the set, screaming "My career's over if I am in this film!!"

That WEREWOLF IN GIRL'S DORM make-up... what WAS that artist thinking of?!!

"Y'know, ya never see a wolf man who looks like a massive burn victim will all kinds of bulges and cliff-scars across his face.  That's what a Real Werewolf would look like, in my book!"  Uh... OK...

What that film really lacked was Whit Bissell as some doctor.  Probably for the make-up artist, himself!  (Of course, I'd stick Whit Bissell in almost every monster movie... crime drama... and he'd have been a wonderful addition to AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN films.  If only-!)

That would be OCTAMAN (1971), with Octaman suit by Rick Baker.
