It's actually a very diabolically drawn cat with the apt name of Lucifer. A man kills his elderly uncle, the cat's beloved master, to inherit the old man's estate. But Lucifer has always been unremittingly hostile to the man and he believes the cat is plotting vengeance against him for the killing of his uncle. The cat's stalking prompts him to grab a rifle and chase the cat which leads him into a patch of quicksand. Lucifer then watches the man sink to his death.
