When it comes to 1/6 scale  (my favorite) it boils down to this: Value (I place on the) figure must be = or > then the price.  Otherwise, I pass.  I won't spend a lot on a so-so figure just because that what is costs.  When I missed the Sideshow Mummy the first time around and later saw it trading at $100-$200 on eBay I knew that a) I WAS going to add it to my collection because I wanted it and b) There was no way I was paying that price for what was one of the weaker entries in the Sideshow monster line (zero poseability and only a slight upgrade from the Hasbro version)  So I waited a while and finally snagged one on eBay for $38 ($2 under what the original list price).  Looking at the current Amok Time offering of classic horror figures they pretty much all seem a decent value for the money, some a far better value then the price and some coming pretty close to my personal "level off" point (any higher and I'd say it was to high).  All that being said, I am also fully aware that these are not "hot" or highly anticapited figures for the majority of 1/6 collectors.  I was/am thrilled to see a Blood of Dracula figure or a Rondo Hatton but the people buying GI Joe or Star Wars etc certainly don't care (or often even recognize the character).

Pretty much the same here.  have many interests, and while some things are enticing, if they are priced too high for the amount of interest I have, I just pass on them.

Case in point is rod serling. He's a guy in a suit, and really just needs a proper headsculpt. $25-$30, and I'd probably pick one up, because I used to really like twilight zone, but over that, and I just don't have enough passion for him to add him to my collection.
