In the mail, today. I finally replaced that DVD18 set of the Universal released HAMMER films with the Blu-ray set.  :)

Was there anything wrong with the Universal set?  Are there additional films on this one?

Mike, I read (Amazon reviews) that some of these Hammer BluRay releases went back to some pan & puke aspect ratio.  Oh please, no...  can you verify?

Oh hell, really? I haven't looked at them, yet. I'll have to look up the correct AR before watching. I'll let you know what I find.

Here's the Amazon 'page' for this product and "Rick W's" review includes the 1:66-to-1 with black side-bars, vs. the older 2:00-to-1 ratio.  He still gives the collection 5 stars, by the way.

Also, I see there is a slight difference in a titling: "EVIL OF DR. FRANKENSTEIN" instead of the ages-old "EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN".  Can you check the title-card of the film itself to see if "DR" is included or if that's someone's inserted typo?  That would be a curiosity for me, and one that makes good sense because that's one of the Frankenstein films that truly highlights the Doctor's evil side.

I hate to see these aspect differences show up for whatever reasons.  I get this feeling that these rightsholders are trying out new jigs and lures on us.

Same 8 films as in the old set. I assume that is all the Hammer movies that Universal has the US distribution rights for.

Good, I hate having to spend more money when I don't need to.  I don't mind upgrading when I can find something cheap, like used at a yard sale.  Yard sales are a great source for movies.  I can get DVDs (sometimes even sealed ones, seasons of a show, and Blu-Rays) for $1 generally.  My best deal was TOY STORY 3 DVD/Blu-Ray combo and sealed for a quarter.  This past weekend I picked up a bunch of DVDs for $1 each.  Most were mainstream movies, but finished my Star Trek movie collection with STAR TREK VI and STAR TREK: INSURRECTION.  Sometimes I even find more unusual titles.  About a month ago I picked ALUCARDA.  Haven't watched it yet though.

I always figured they were a bunch of old scratched up things, so I never bother to look.

There are a lot of DVD's out there that were only watched once.  People buy movies thinking they are getting something quite different than what they are.

Sometimes they are unwanted gifts.

Cheaper than taking a family of four out and paying theater prices for snacks.

(Or three, and hiring a babysitter - then taking a chance of having nearby patrons talk through the whole film.)

I check for scratches and to make sure the disc is inside.   Kids' DVDs are the ones that you really have to check.

Several years back I bought A LOT from an older woman whose husband had passed away and was a horror and Sci Fi fan.  There were boxes of them.  I bought so many that her son thought I had a store and was going to resell them.  I assured them that they were actually for me and that they were going to a home where they would be appreciated.  Quite a bit of unusual stuff including a bunch of Argento and other foreign horror.
