From a newbie's perspective who came here strictly for the MONSTERS, I'm excited for the changes. My first impression of this place was just how amazing the layout/look was and the excitement I felt about the opportunity to learn from a group of older "Monster Kids" who experienced things first hand, back in the day. The sections getting the axe have always struck me as being out of place on a board waving the banner of "Universal Monster Army". The fact that the older threads are in fact being saved, seems like a great compromise. For those needing something more than Monster talk and education, there's still the private messaging system and there's always sites like Facebook. I've made several good friends over the years on boards just like this one, and once that connection was made we swapped phone numbers and began speaking off of the boards in the "real" world. I'm a private person and have never felt the need or desire to share personal things in the open, on a public board. Doesn't mean though that I can't sympathize with those that do or that I look down on them for doing it. To each their own. The talk of leaving should be looked at in a positive light because maybe those parties have outgrown this place and the prospect of a fresh start elsewhere, on stomping grounds catering to their new needs, is maybe just what the doctor ordered.

No one came here for the General Discussion area and if your heart now lies in areas like that, you should move on. You'll be happier for it and maybe your monster kid heart will be renewed and you'll want to stop in from time to time and share in again what brought you here in the first place.

My two cents.

You are correct in the assessment that most of the mods/admin do not post very often.  I can only speak for myself, but I rarely post because I'm not much interested in what is being posted about at this point.  Most of it has little to do with the monster toys and films that attracted me to this group in the first place.

If you post it (start a thread) they will come.  I've found that it's the people who complain about a forum not having threads that interest them or that a forum is slow are not the ones who are starting threads.  If you don't see a topic that interests you, start threads that do interest you.  It's as simple as that, don't wait for the next guy to start interesting threads, be proactive. Don't blame others for your lack of interest.

"Blue," with respect:

- The first part of that statement, you have no way of knowing (though the gist of this thread seems to be that once one was here, that area became a treasure to many.)

- The second part of that statement is pretty non-democratic; one person doesn't make the decision for when another should move on.

Best,

Sorry for not posting there in the last few months but limericks have to sort of pop into my head and I can't force the creative juices. I believe it is a capital offense to kill a limerick .. or at least it should be one.

As a longtime member -- one who primarily posts in Monster-specific threads -- I will say this:

I have seen a lot of growth over the years here at the UMA.  I have seen a lot of changes and would-be changes, many peaceful, some tumultuous.  With or without "off-topic" posts, this place has endured.  I think it will endure through this (massive) change as well.  And who knows?  It might just grow again.  The one thing about all of these changes, however, is the tact with which they have been handled.  There is a transparency and understanding inherent in all of the moderators' decisions that keeps us moving forward.

With a lack of moderator power, this latest change is the only option.  The moderators are hardcore Monster fans with lives outside of the UMA.  As a regular member who also fits that bill, I totally empathize with wanting to focus exclusively on the heart of the forum.

I also empathize with the folks who have spent hours pouring their hearts into the off-topic forums.  Had the off-topic forums come with built-in expiration dates (as many discussion forums have), there would probably be less heartache.  The temporary nature would have been self-evident.  Perhaps that's something to keep in mind with future changes.  Alas, that is neither here nor there.

What we face now is the present situation, one that will soon be a memory of the distant past.

Cheers!

The limericks need to stay, especially since they are usually monster-themed. They could go into a Monster Lit section where Classic Horror Books, Modern Horror Books, and Horror Comics would all dwell.

They were all classified as non-monsters by the powers that be and moved from the Vintage Monster Toys to the Vintage Non-Monster Toys when the latter forum was created just over two years ago. The "What comics do you collect?" thread was also moved from Memorable Memorabilia to the Vintage Non-Monster Toys forum at the time.

You need to stop.  You don't know the answer to that question, and although you technically did not answer it but rather stated what happened in the past, your post is completely unnecessary and undermines the situation.  You have stated your opinions pretty clearly. Thanks for your input. Now step off.

That makes some sense. We'll talk about it.

Now that I know some monstery things like Star Wars, trek, Lost in Space, etc. arent taboo topics....the only thread I will be truly sad to see evaporate is the Beast Corps: Pets of The UMA thread. Because Kitties are cool.  8)
